K.A. ACE REWARDS ASSEMBLIES

The reward programme’s purpose is to promote positive behaviour, in particular the values of

Ambition

Community

Endeavour

Pupils gain merits by showing that they have embraced and accepted these values. Those in S1, S2 and S3 who achieved the award in the first block were treated to a Hallowe’en Assembly on Friday 30th, where spooky fun with the likes of “Apple Dookin”, Dress the Mummy, Ghostly Waiter, Scarecrow relay was the order of the day. Ghostly monster music accompanied the event.

Pupils also had a chance to play “The Price is Right” as part of our recognition of Finance Friday. To make the event even more competitive and “financial”, a cash prize was won by the best boy and the best girl in each year group.

Great fun was had by all as the photos show.

Dyslexia Awareness Week

Dyslexia Awareness Week will run in school from Monday 2nd to Friday 8th November. S1 and S2 pupils received information about dyslexia during this week’s assemblies and took part in an interesting activity to help them to understand a bit more about the difficulties people with dyslexia might face.

Throughout the course of this week, staff will be trying out dyslexia friendly strategies in class and most pupils will be shown an informative BBC documentary by Kara Tointon during their PSE class to gain more of an insight into the condition. The S1 and S2 book clubs will also be contributing to the week’s activities by designing posters to raise awareness and by finding out about famous authors with dyslexia.

For more information, you can visit http://www.dyslexiascotland.org.uk/news/dyslexia-awareness-week-2-8-november-2015

Scottish Chamber Orchestra

Players from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra recently visited Kilmarnock Academy to lead a composition workshop with the pupils in the Advanced Higher Music class.  Students participated in a day long workshop where they created a piece of music together, finishing with a recording.  This was followed by a visit to the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock to see the full Orchestra perform.

This experience was an excellent chance to see professional musicians playing in our local area and the class have used the composition techniques they learned in their own composition folios.

Dean Castle Visit

AH at the deanThe Higher and Advanced Higher Music classes recently visited the Dean Castle to view the early musical instruments on display.  This collection is famous and students were lucky enough to be taken behind the scenes and given a private, guided tour.  We saw a range of Renaissance and Baroque musical instruments and learned about the history of Kilmarnock during these times.  Students were also given the opportunity to handle priceless items, including swords and armour.

Historical context is an important factor in the study of music as the social upheaval during the Renaissance and Baroque Eras had a huge impact on musical developments. Below are some pictures of our visit.

Brilliant Books – October 2015

To celebrate Hallowe’en, our S1 pupils took part in a scary story competition run by the school library and the English department. Pupils were given a choice of three story starters and were asked to write 500 words to continue the tale. The winner of the competition was Mia Hay. Mia’s story The Graveyard Haunting is featured in the October issue of Brilliant Books – a magazine created by East Ayrshire School Librarians. Three runner-up prizes went to Bailey Douglas for Laugh if you Dare, Andrew Maxwell for Pretty Little Noses and Sofia Saleem for The Shortcut through the Graveyard.

European Day of Languages at Kilmarnock Academy

Kilmarnock Academy celebrated European Day of Languages in style with a range of activities for pupils from S1 to S6.  The Assembly Hall was decorated with flags and banners made by S1 pupils and French delicacies were on sale in the foyer during break – the “pains au chocolat” proved very popular indeed and quickly sold out!
