P5 and P6 – Kilmarnock College CSI Workshop

Science
Kilmarnock College: CSI Workshop

The P5 and P6 pupils from each class enjoyed an exciting afternoon last week at Fenwick Primary as Derek and Shona from Ayrshire College brought the excitement of CSI to life! The pupils came together to participate in an engaging session filled with several investigations.

The pupils were tasked with unraveling the mystery of the sweetie thief. The P5 and P6 detectives got involved in a series of experiments and investigations. They demonstrated great observation and problem-solving skills, and worked in teams to crack the case.

We owe a huge thank you to Shona and Derek for their dedication in delivering such an engaging and informative workshop.

P5/6 – Literacy (reading)

Literacy: Reading
The Breadwinner by Deborah Ellis

P5/6 excitedly started their adventure with our new class novel “The Breadwinner” by Deborah Ellis which is set in Afghanistan. They discussed their prior knowledge and questions about the country, explored the term “breadwinner,” and became book detectives, searching for and finding details about the author, characters, and setting. We look forward to exploring Afghanistan’s rich culture and following Parvana’s journey in this interesting and engaging novel. We will be learning about stereotypes, children’s rights, inequalities, geography, culture and history throughout this novel.

P5/6 & P2/3 Science Experiments

British Science Week: Experiment Time

5/6, along with P2/3 explored osmosis through experimentation.

Firstly the pupils enjoyed learning about solids, liquids, and gasses where they made a human solid, human liquid, and human gas.

Solids consists of lots of tiny particles packed close together:

Liquids consist of less tiny particles which are spread out:

Gasses consist of the least tiny particles which are spread out even more:

Experiment time:

P5/6 created hypotheses of what might happen when we placed a solid (gummy bear) into a liquid (water) and left it overnight.

P2/3 led the learning by showing P5/6 what to do.

We left the cups containing our solid and liquids overnight to investigate today. When we returned the gummy bears has gotten bigger. We learned that this was due to a process called osmosis where water molecules transfer from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration.

Finally, we discussed how we could use this knowledge to remove the water from the gummy bear. Some hypotheses we have put to the test are;

  • placing the gummy bear in a solution of water and lots of salt
  • placing the gummy bear in a solution of water and lots of sugar
  • placing the gummy bear in just salt
  • placing the gummy bear in just sugar

Why don’t you ask your child about the final outcome?

P5/6 – Science Week Experiments (1)

British Science Week: Experiment Time

P5/6 explored water density through experimentation.

As a class, we discussed the experiment before each pupil wrote down their own hypothesis of what might happen.

We discussed different variables before carrying out the experiment such as volume of water, how many spoonfulls of sugar, and volume of food colouring, to ensure that we could ensure an accurate comparison. This involved good communication and team work to ensure we got it right.

The final stage of our experiment was to observe the results and discuss why we thought this happened. When we poured each of the separate solutions into one main beaker, we saw the different coloured solutions ‘layering’ in the beaker and Joey was able to explain that he thought this was due to the density in the solutions (with each solution having a different density due to the amount of sugar that was dissolved in each).

Super work P5/6!

P5/6 – Science Centre

British Science Week: Science Centre Trip

Primary 5/6 had an excellent time at the Glasgow Science Centre! They loved exploring a range of topics such as space, energy, and the human body. One of the highlights was visiting the planetarium, where they looked at stars and learned about the universe. The pupils smiled all day long as they participated in a whole host of hands-on activities.

The pupils enjoyed all of the floors but most of all enjoyed floor 3 – The Body Works. They loved getting competitive on this floor whilst investigating how the body works.

Primary 5/6 really were great role models and represented our school spectacularly throughout the whole day.

P5/6 – Buddy Visit

Buddy Visit: Read a Story

The Primary 5/6 pupils showcased exceptional kindness and respect as they paired up with their ECC buddies for a shared reading session on Friday afternoon. They demonstrated excellent patience and genuine enthusiasm when helping their buddy to pick a book then reading it to them. The pupils really helped to create a nurturing environment. Not only did they do an excellent job of demonstrating expression and passion when reading, they also demonstrated our school’s values of kindness and respect throughout the whole visit – true role models for our younger children.

P5/6 – PE (rugby)

Health and Wellbeing: PE
Rugby – Evasion Skills

P5/6 have started a new PE block focusing on rugby skills.
We are very lucky to have some rugby players in our class so this week Mason demonstrated leadership skills by explaining then demonstrating the game ‘rabbits and rats’ which continued our practice on using different movements to evade our opponents. The game was enjoyed by all pupils and incorporated a bit of fun competition.
Well done Mason!
