Gary Chapman’s Love Languages identifies five key ways to communicate to people your appreciation and build on human connection.
The 5 Love Languages are:
- Words of Affirmation
- Quality Time
- Acts of Service
- Touch
- Gifts
Chapman indicates that although we appreciate all of the five love languages, we all have one or two that mean more to us. For example, the student who appreciates touch will not feel as appreciated when told he did a good job. Although a nice thing to hear, it may not have been as effective as a high five. Regardless of how much you care about your pupils, if you do not communicate it in terms they can understand, they will never be able to feel it.
Knowing your learners love language will support positive relationships within your classroom and provide you with creative ways to motivate you pupils in their learning.
To support this, EAST have taken the principles of Gary Chaman’s work and have created Value Language assessments that can be used to give you an insight into your learner’s love language. We can also support programmes of work helping children and young people to understand the different love languages and improve relationships within the classroom.
