Mrs O’Neill Update 20.05.20

Primary 1, it is so lovely to be writing to you again.  How are you?  How has your week been?  I was super impressed to see so many people taking part in the Education City activities.  Well done!  This week is Health Week and I hope you are enjoying the challenges on this week’s grid.

As part our 500 mile challenge, I was out walking one day and found this pretty trail.  It was lovely walking beside the beautiful bluebells.  What do you think I saw as I walked along the trail?

On your health grid this week, a learning idea is for you to make your own trail.  What would you see as you walk along your trail?  A friendly dragon?  An alien?  A scary troll?  On my walk, I found this peacock butterfly.  Why do you think it is called a peacock butterfly?

As I walked further and enjoyed all the beautiful countryside, we are very fortunate to have in our part of Scotland, I heard twigs breaking very quickly, leaves rustling close by and then suddenly a roe deer jumped out in front of me.  He’s very well camouflaged with the browns of the trees and bushes.

My walk reminded me that it is not the end of the walk which is the best part, but what my senses enjoy along the way.  Part of Health Week is looking after our thoughts and feelings.  It is sometimes hard to find the best words to tell someone if you are feeling sad orangry and if you are having thoughts about how long it will be until you are able to play with your friends, go to your clubs or come back to school.  It is ok to think and feel all of this.  To show someone how you feel you could draw a picture, put on a play with your toys, send a postcard to your friend or cuddle in with someone you love.  I am incredibly proud of you and look forward to being together again.

Hi Primary 1

It is lovely to be writing to you again.  How are you?  How did you get on with the learning grid from last week?  I’ve had a look at your progress with Education City and well done to everyone who has been trying so hard! If you are finding anything tricky, please get in touch and we will do our absolute best to help.

On Friday, it was 75 years since Germany agreed to stop fighting with other countries.  People were very excited by this and had lots of parties to celebrate the end of a very long war.  Families were happy because soldiers who were away bravely fighting in some other countries would be coming home.  To celebrate this special anniversary of VE Day, I decided to try to bake some scones.

Baking is not a skill I am very good at, but I like learning new things.  I gathered everything I would need to make scones and I realised that my senses were really going to help make baking easier.

When I looked at my ingredients it was difficult to see how I could add these together to make anything tasty.

Following the recipe, I measured out the ingredients and put them into a large bowl.  The recipe said I was to rub the flour, sugar, baking powder and butter together.  Look at the photo below, how do you think that would feel?

Next, I mixed in the egg and milk into the bowl to make a sticky dough.  After rolling out the dough and cutting the scones into their scone shapes, I put them into the oven and set the timer.  As the scones baked, they filled the kitchen with the most delicious smell, and I felt hopeful that they could be tasty!

I heard the timer on the cooker beep and (keeping my fingers crossed) opened the oven door.  Primary 1, I am so happy to tell you that they tasted delicious!

Thank you for reading about my baking experience this week, boys and girls.  Perhaps you could try baking at home this week or take part in another activity which uses lots of your senses.  Take care, keep safe and stay well everyone.

Mrs O’Neill Update – Check-in 6.5.20

Hi Primary 1

It is Mrs O’Neill here! As lovely as it is to be writing to you, I would much rather be seeing your smiley faces. How are you? How is your learning going? If you are finding anything tricky, please get in touch and we will do our absolute best to help you out. Thank you to everyone who has updated their blog!

I have taken some photos of the sunny walks I have been enjoying. Have you noticed any signs we are moving from spring to summer?

I have noticed the trees are in full leaf and lovely and green right now. If you followed this path in your imagination, who might you meet? A Gruffalo? A talking tree? A little mouse?

I spotted a family of ducks going for a swim. I can count 5 ducks in the pond. Do you know a song about 5 ducks?

Can you see the little black tadpoles in this photo? They were swimming super fast!

Lastly, I saw a beautiful butterfly and it settled on a leaf to enjoy the warm sunshine. Isn’t it pretty?

We don’t just have to look for signs of summer with our eyes, we can also listen with our ears. Listen out for mummy birds singing ‘you can do it’ as their baby birds learn to fly and grasshoppers chirping in the long grass.

Take care, keep safe and stay well everyone.
