Primary 5/6 – Mrs McCaig, Mrs Schendel

And for the last time – good morning P5/6!

I can’t quite believe that today is the last day of the school year.  Have an amazing summer with your families.

Here is a wee video to round off our year.

Mrs McCaig

Friday 26th June 2020

Last day of term and what a term it has been!!  Who could have imagined you would have been finishing P5/6 by being in lockdown and learning from home.

Can I  say a big thank you to all of you and well done for getting through this strange time.  It has been so hard for you missing friends and family and having to turn your home into your classroom.  I have loved seeing your blogs, reading your emails, engaging in online games and watching you learn in this new way.  You should be so proud of yourselves!

I have loved being your teacher every Friday for the last two years and I am looking forward to watching you grow as you head into P6/7!

Traditionally today in class we would have been playing boardgames.  Since it is also such a rainy day, you could maybe get some games out to play with your family.

I really hope you have a great summer holiday.  Stay safe and I am so looking forward to seeing you back in the classroom in August.

Mrs Schendel

Friday 19th June

It’s Friday again…and only one more Friday after today until the summer holidays!

I have been in school all week and it has been so lovely to be back but it’s so quiet without you all there.  All the adults who work in the school have been coming in too throughout the week and it has been great to catch up with them, at a safe social distance of course.  We have talked so much!! I’m sure you will be the same when you get to see some of your friends for the first time when we get back in August.

End of year certificates

At this time of year traditionally lots of certificates are given out to celebrate our achievements throughout the school year.  This may be from school but could also be from clubs you might attend out with school.  During this strange time of lockdown lots of focus has been on looking after our mental health and being kind to ourselves. For your task today I would like you to have a think about how awesome you are and if you could award yourself a certificate for anything at all what would it be for?  Design your own certificate and send me a picture via email or upload it to your blog.

Sumdog

Our winner last week was Daryl who answered a whopping 578 questions!!  200 well-earned points to you Daryl.

100 points to Layla, Madison, Lucy, Ryan and Clark who completed the challenge.

Bailey, you were one question away from completing the challenge so I am awarding you 100 points too.

Neve and Morgan – I have awarded you 50 points for starting the challenge.

The East Ayrshire competition starts today and runs until next Thursday so I have entered us into that.  Let’s see if we can get some Catrine names on the East Ayrshire Leaderboard.  Good luck!!

Bump up week

Next week we are having a ‘virtual bump up week’ so keep your eyes on this page to find out more.

Have a great weekend.

Mrs Schendel

Wednesday 17th June 2020

Morning P5/6, I hope your week is going well. I was very excited yesterday as I got to go into school for the first time since lockdown. It was lovely to get into our school, safely and with physical distancing, but it just wasn’t the same without all of you filling our classroom.  What it did remind me of was all the amazing work that we had been doing when we finished.  So, I thought I would remind you all of just how fantastic you all are! Here’s a whistle stop tour of the things that made me smile yesterday:

  • the amazing dolls’ houses, complete with swimming pools and balconies (very fancy!)
  • your electric lorries for the STEM water bottle challenge
  • our numeracy wall filled with your amazing Number Talks strategies
  • our Feel Good Friday wall filled with your photos and all of the wonderful things your classmates said about you
  • the bunnets and toories hanging outside our classroom (one of my favourites)
  • your amazing STEM Leader’s Award inventions and letters to the judges

I could go on and on, as I wandered around our room just reminiscing for ages. It reminded me of just how much we got through this school year and how wonderfully creative and talented each and every one of you are.  Not to mention how busy we always were – P5/6 love a challenge!

So, today I thought you could reflect on your school year and create a little school year memory page.  You could include the following, your biggest achievement, funniest moment, thing you are most proud of, best outdoor activity, favourite topic, favourite day, challenges you overcame and a picture of yourself and your friends.  This is just a few ideas, I would love for you to add to this.  You can draw it out, type it up or record it on your phone or tablet, the choice is yours. Don’t forget to post it on your Blog.

I will also be online today for a live email chat at 12pm.  I hope as many of you can join me as possible. I will send out a group email and simply hit ‘reply’ and get involved. I would love to catch up with you all.

Keep up the great work on Sumdog – it’s tight at the top of the leader board once again!

Have a wonderful Wednesday.

Mrs McCaig

Monday 15th June 2020

Good morning everyone. I hope you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed seeing the sunshine again. We spent lots of time outside and found a couple of new walks, although one did become extra-long as I got us a little lost. Oops!

Well done to everyone who took part in last week’s Sumdog competitions.  It was tight at the top of the leader boards but the results are in and are as follows:

Times Table Competition: 1st Daryl, 2nd Morgan, 3rd Ryan

Grammar Challenge: 1st Daryl, 2nd Madison, 3rd Lucy

Spelling Spectacular: 1st Morgan, 2nd Daryl, 3rd Madison

Well done everyone, your coins have been rewarded to your Sumdog account, happy spending!  I have added a few new competitions for you to complete, log on and get playing.

This week I thought we could have a walking challenge. I would like you to record the number of kilometres you walk throughout the week.  Remember 1km is equal to 1000m.  So you could even measure your garden and get some kilometres under your belt.  I would like everyone to send me their week’s total on Friday and I will add them all together and work out how far we have walked as a class.  How far do you think we will get together? Perhaps Ayr or even Glasgow if we all work hard!

I can’t believe we are almost at the end of the school year. Friday would have been the P6 ‘Big Sleep Out’ but sadly with everything going on we couldn’t hold it this year. So, today your challenge is to build a den.  It can be inside or outside and can be made of whatever you have lying around that you are allowed to use.  Perhaps you could camp out for a few hours in it, have lunch in it or just enjoy the peace and quiet. I would love to see your den creations so please post them on your Blog or drop me an email with a picture. P5 I would love you to also get involved with this, it’s good practise for next year.

Have a marvellous Monday.

Miss you all.

Mrs McCaig

Friday 12th June 2020

Happy Friday everyone.  I hope you have all had a good week.  I loved seeing all your sports day and health week pictures from last week, it looked like you had a lot of fun.  A few weeks ago Skye and I decided to try and do the couch to 5k running challenge.  I have never been very keen on running but as you know lots of your teachers enjoy running and even enter competitions.  I never thought I would be able to run 5 kilometres however Mr Schendel has been coaching Skye and I and although we are not there yet we are hopeful that by the beginning of July we will be able to run 5k without stopping.  I’ve even found that I am enjoying it!

Have you set yourself any challenges during lockdown?  Or maybe you have learned a new skill.  I would love to hear about it on your blog or by e-mail.

Maths – Volume

This week in maths we are going to learn about calculating volume.  Below is a link to a video on BBC bitesize which explains how to do this.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zjbg87h/articles/z3jrxfr

Here are some worksheets to follow up.  As usual there are three levels, select the level which best suits you.  You can print out the sheets or read them off your screen and complete it on a piece of paper.  Send me your answers via e-mail or post them on your blog.

Calculate Volume 1 star*

Calculate Volume 2 star**

Calculate Volume 3 star***

Sumdog

I didn’t set a Sumdog challenge last week as it was Sports Day.   The winner of the previous challenge on rounding to the nearest 10 and 100 was Daryl – well done Daryl I have awarded you 100 coins.  Lucy and Madison also completed the challenge so I have awarded you 50 coins each.

This week the challenge I have set is a revision of triangles and lines.

Types of triangles:

Scalene triangle – all sides are different lengths

Equilateral triangle – all sides are same length

Isosceles triangle – two sides are equal lengths

Right angled triangle – one angle is 90 degrees

Types of lines:

Parallel lines – lines opposite each other that never meet

Perpendicular lines – two lines that meet at a right angle

Intersecting lines – two lines which meet at a point

A ray  – a straight line that has one start point and goes on infinitely in only one direction.

200 points are up for grabs for the winner and I will award everyone who completes the challenge 100 points.

ReadingWise

If you haven’t been on ReadingWise for a while maybe you could revisit it this week.  It’s a great tool to help with your spelling.

Have a great weekend.

Mrs Schendel

Wednesday 10th June 2020

Good morning everyone. Hope you are having a great week.  It’s been a busy week on Sumdog with everyone racing for a place in the top three in the times tables competition.  It is very close so it’s still all to play for so keep going. I have also now set a spelling and grammar competition for you too. The winner of each gets 250 coins to spend in their Sumdog house.  Keep practising your spelling words and get someone at home to test you on them at the end of the week.

Before school stopped we spent lots of time focusing on the skills needed for effective problem solving. Lots of you were really getting to grips with the thinking and questioning that helps with solving tricky problems.  Can you solve the problem below? Don’t forget to apply the rules of BODMAS.

Today I would also like you to try the Emoji Quiz and use the clues to problem solve. https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/quizzes/bp-tricky-emoji-quiz?xtor=CS8-1000-[Discovery_Cards]-[Multi_Site]-[SL08]-[PS_CBBC~N~~O_EmojiQuiz]

Try it with someone at home, we had a few laughs trying to figure some of them out.  I hope you do too.  Let me know how you get on by emailing me on Fiona.mccaig@eastayrshire.org.uk or post on your Blog.

Have a super day.

Mrs McCaig

Monday 8th June 2020

Good morning!

I hope you have all recovered from a fantastic Health Week.  The videos, posts and pictures were brilliant and I loved seeing what you and your family got up to. Well done for all of the effort you put in.  The weather wasn’t just as nice as we have been used to at the weekend but I hope you still managed to get out and about and catch up with some friends and family, safely.  We spent lots of time down at the burn with fishing nets.  There were a few ‘over the wellie heed’ moments but it was good fun.

First up this week are our spelling words.

Blue group – pattern, strength, beginning, diary, health, peaceful, success, believe, difference, height, people, surely, beneath, different, imaginary

Red group – Christmas, Easter, Season, birthday, centre, circle, square, triangle, rectangle, satisfied, juice, stopped, heard, juice

Number – This week I want us all to focus on our times tables.  Pick the tables you need to work on and practise them as much as you can. Ask an adult at home to ask you quick fire questions to see how accurate and fast you are.  I would also like you to create a game using your tables. It can be a card game, board game or any other type of game you can come up with.  I have also set up a tables competition on Sumdog. There are 200 coins up for grabs for the top three players by the end of the week. Well done to Lucy who was last week’s winner.

Hour of Code – We did lots of work on Tinkercad and coding in school earlier in the session. This week I thought we could all refresh of skills using Hour of Code.  Simply click the link and select the type of game you would like to code and the level.  Lots of you did Minecraft last time so you might want to try something new or try a more challenging level.  Keep me posted on how you get on. https://hourofcode.com/uk/learn

Have a fab Monday.

Mrs McCaig

Friday 5th June 2020

Sports Day

Good morning! We’ve made it to another Friday and today is Sports Day!  I hope you have all enjoyed Health Week.  I have particularly enjoyed seeing all your dances from Tik Tok Tuesday.  We have lots of activities planned for you today.  Miss Robb has set you two family races and a family challenge, have a look at the main page for details of these.

Hurdles Race

Our class race will be the hurdles race.  I would like you plan and set out 5 hurdles to jump over.  Use your imagination and find things from around your garden or house.  You could use books (stand them on their sides for extra height), boxes or maybe even members of your family.  Set out 5 hurdles to jump over and do 3 laps of your course.  You could time each member of the family and see who can do it the fastest.

Plank Challenge

Our next challenge is the plank challenge.  How long can you hold the plank position?  Remember to keep a straight back!  Time yourself and let me know how long you can hold it for.  Maybe your whole family can take part and see who is the last person planking!

Fruity Friday

Today is also Fruity Friday.  There are lots of ways to enjoy fruit.  Maybe you could make a fruit kebab or a smoothie or you could create your own picture using fruit like the one above.  This would be a lovely snack for after all your hard work.

Have a great day everyone.  Please share as many videos or photos as possible on your blog or send me an email to: roberta.schendel@eastayrshire.org.uk.

Can’t wait to see what you get up to.

Mrs Schendel

Wednesday 3rd June 2020

Good morning everyone. We are half way through the week again. I hope you are enjoying Health Week and have been giving each challenge a go. Thanks to those who have sent me their TikTok Tuesday Videos, they are brilliant.  Keep them coming!  Below is a reminder of the rest of the week’s activities.   I have also added a Sumdog Competition as a few of you are keen to try and earn more coins. Again there are 200 coins up for grabs for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.

Walking Wednesday

Thoughtful Thursday

Fruity Friday

  • Walking Wednesday

Lots us have been enjoying our daily walks during lockdown. Today you and your family could go on a walk over lunchtime and take a little picnic and sit somewhere safely to enjoy your packed lunch outdoors.  Once you have had your lunch I would like you to release our inner superhero and turn-on your ‘spidey senses’, just like Spiderman!  To do this you just need to super-focus your senses.  Simply sit or lie down and close your eyes thinking only about your senses.  What can you hear? Can you smell anything? Do you feel anything? Is there a taste in the air?  Spend 5 to 10 minutes sitting or lying down focusing on this.  It’s fun to see what everyone comes up with and it is super relaxing.

When you get back home you could try drawing a map of your walk and uploading it to your Blog. I would love to see all of the different routes you try out.

  • Thoughtful Thursday

During Mental Health Awareness week and Feel Good Friday we reflected on being positive, kind and caring about ourselves and others. We have also been Clapping on Thursdays for our keyworkers and displaying rainbows in our windows.  The thoughtfulness of people during lockdown has been lovely to see.  Today I would like you to think about all of the thoughtful things that have happened as a result of lockdown. Some of the things I have noticed are people shopping for relatives and elderly neighbours, lovely window displays to brighten up people’s daily walks and doorstep deliveries of home baking.  Make a little list of these things and see just how wonderful our communities are.

  • Fruity Friday

It’s Friday and it’s Sports Day! Not only that, it is Fruity Friday.  Today I would like you to get creative with your fruit by making a smoothie. We move smoothies in my house and a favourite is strawberry and banana.  Find some fruit then add some milk or yogurt and use a hand blender to blitz it, always ask an adult to help with this.  When it is nice and smooth pour it in to a glass and add some ice! Yum!  If you are not too keen on fruit this is a great way to help get your ‘five a day’.  It’s also a great way to use up fruit that is maybe a bit soft and no one wants to eat. You can also pour your smoothie into ice-lolly moulds to make smoothie ice-lollies – they are amazing!  Enjoy and please don’t forget to post the pictures on your Blog.

Take care.

Mrs McCaig

Monday 1st June 2020

How can it be June already and the final count down to the end of term?  I hope you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the beautiful sunshine as well as the chance to see family members, at a distance, for the first time in a while.  That certainly made my family happy this weekend. I loved chatting with some of you last week and I will be calling the rest of you today and tomorrow.

This week is Health week and Mrs Ferguson came up with a fantastic theme for each day that I think you will all love!

Mindfulness Monday, TikTok Tuesday, Walking Wednesday,  Thoughtful Thursday, Fruity Friday

  • Mindfulness Monday

Sometimes our brains are really busy and we can find it difficult to switch off and relax.  Mindfulness is a great way to relax your body and mind. Click on the link and follow the guided meditation – don’t worry if your mind starts to wander, just get right back into it. You might feel a bit funny at first but the more you do it the better you get and the more you will enjoy it too. I love mindfulness mediation and often fall asleep listening to them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh58j2Yw6dg  If you have a break out of the sun today why not try some Mindfulness Colouring. Have a look online for a mindfulness colouring sheets or ‘take your pen for a walk’ and colour in.  Pick your favourite colours, listen to your favourite music and enjoy just colouring or drawing.

  • TikTok Tuesday

TiktTok seems to have taken the world by storm and I think it’s because we all love dancing, music and a little bit of fun.  Some of the teachers have even got caught up in the craze during lockdown!  I know most of you are really good at lots of the dances already and our class made our own for World Book Day. Whether you have TikTok of not, I would like you to learn a new dance today, you can even ask your family to join in the fun too. You could do anything at all from the Macarena, the All Blacks Haka to a TikTok routine. I would love to see a little video of your dance. (Mine took several attempts!)

  • Walking Wednesday

Lots us have been enjoying our daily walks during lockdown. Have a happy and healthy week.

Friday 29th May

Good morning everyone.  I hope you have all been enjoying the lovely weather again these past couple of days and it looks like we have a weekend of more sunshine ahead.

Reading

I have started re-reading the Harry Potter books and I have enjoyed sitting in the sun and reading.  I’m on the forth book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and I am enjoying comparing the books to the films.  Lots of things are the same and I can picture the actors saying their lines but lots of details are different too.  Skye is reading them after me so we are enjoying discussing the differences and although we have seen the films and read the books many times we are still discovering new details.  I hope you are keeping up with some reading too, if not maybe this week you could pick up a book to read and email me and tell me all about it or post a picture on blog on your of the book you are reading and tell me all about it.

Maths – Area of Right Angled Triangles

Today we are going to look at calculating the area of a right angled triangle.  Click on the link below and it will take you to a video on BBC Bitesize which explains how to do this.  Complete the activities to demonstrate your understanding.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqr4jxs/articles/zmr3382

Below is a worksheet which will give you more practise in calculating  the area of a triangle.

Area of right angled triangles

I have created another Sumdog challenge.  This week it is focusing on rounding to 10 and 100 within measurement.  You have until next Thursday at 3pm to complete it so I can then announce the winner next Friday morning. I will award the winner 100 coins and will give 50 coins to everyone who completes the challenge.  Well done to Ryan and Daryl who completed last week’s challenge I have sent you some coins as a reward.

Feel Good Friday

Again this week you can select someone you know to create a Feel Good Friday picture for.  Maybe you could take it to someone you haven’t seen for a while and post it through their letterbox if they stay close to you.  Or you could send them a photo of your picture or pop it in the post to them.

Have a great weekend.  Enjoy the sunshine and remember your sun screen!

Mrs Schendel

Wednesday 27th May 2020

Good morning everyone. I hope you enjoyed the extra couple of days off. I did lots of odd jobs that I have been meaning to get to. I painted my front door and even climbed ladders to reach the hood above it which was a little scary.  We also decorated wooden spoons for our village ‘Spoonville’. There were so many amazing designs; we had lots of fun doing it.

I am excited to be phoning you all at home this week at some point and hope to speak to as many of you as possible. It has been so long since I heard your voices so I am really happy to have the chance to speak to you this week.

This week’s spelling words are:

Blue group – outrageous, stationary, awful, development, guard, parallel, straight, beautiful, dialogue, guess, participation, strategy, becoming, diamond, happened

Red group – almost, autumn, winter, spring, summer, happened, beautiful, frightened, teacher, difficult, little, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales

Practise your words throughout the week in any way you like, be as creative as you can and post some pictures on your Blog. Ask an adult to test you on your words towards the end of the week.

There has been lots of information on the news and in the newspapers about returning to school and I know that we are all feeling lots of different emotions. This week I would like you to write me a letter about how you are feeling about the return to school.  Be sure to detail any worries you have as well as the things that you are excited about. I am keen to hear all about how you are feeling. Just send your letter to Fiona.mccaig2@eastayrshire.org.uk. You can write your letter and attach it as a photo or type it and attach the document.

Well done to Daryl who was the highest scorer in the class for the East Ayrshire Contest on Sumdog last week.  We will continue our fraction work this week. Octagons and Hexagons click on  https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-6/ and then select  week 4 (w/c 11th May). Work your way through the lessons throughout the week at your own pace. If you have any problems please email me.

Pentagons click https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/ and select week 6 and work your way through the lessons at your own pace.

IDL – Those who have submitted their topic choice to me I have emailed you some specific tasks related to your subject. I would love to hear how you get on with them so please upload them to your Blog.

Have a lovely day.

Mrs McCaig

Friday 22nd May

Good morning everyone! We have made it to another Friday. 😄

A couple of weeks ago Daryl shared on his blog some banana and Nutella muffins he had made and he also sent us the recipe. I have never really enjoyed baking or cooking but in the spirit of the lockdown I thought I would try something new. I am so proud of the finished product and my family have asked me to make more, so that must be a good sign. Thank you Daryl for inspiring me and here are the finished muffins.

Maths

This week in maths we are going to continue with measure. Today we are going to look at different ways of writing the same measurement and how to convert one unit of measure to another.
We know that:
10mm = 1cm
100cm = 1m
1000m = 1km

1000g = 1kg
1000ml = 1l

Therefore to change 13cm into mm we need to multiply by 10 to give us 130mm.
To change 1673m into kilometres we need to divide by 1000 to give us 1.673km.

I have attached an information sheet to help you with the other conversions.

converting measurements

Below are some exercises to help you practise. Again they have our star ratings so select the sheet which suits you best.

measurement conversion 1*

measurement conversion 2**

measurement conversion 3***

I have also added a new challenge to Sumdog. You have until next Friday to complete it.
Well done to Daryl who won the competitions last week, answering a staggering 563 questions!!  Update – I’ve just realised this competition is still open until 3pm today so maybe someone could try to take on Daryl for the top spot!!

Feel Good Friday

I thought this week as it is mental health awareness week and the focus has been on kindness that we would be kind to ourselves this week. It’s important that we take time to think about ourselves, what we are good at and what we like about ourselves. So I would like you to draw a picture of yourself and write positive things to describe you. You could maybe ask members of your family to add positive comments to your picture too. I would love to see your finished picture on your blog or you could email it to me.
My email address is roberta.schendel@eastayrshire.org.uk

Have a great weekend and stay safe.

Mrs Schendel

Wednesday 20th May 2020

Morning everyone, how are you all?

Today I would like to try a little game that I always played in the car when going on longer drives before the restrictions came into place.  We call it ‘Pass the Story’.  All you do is tell a little part of a story and the next person starts where you left off.  We have laughed until tears rolled down our faces playing this game as each person changes the plot and adds bits and pieces from their imaginations. This might be a little trickier online but I thought we would give it a go.  If you would like to play along make sure that you are online at 11am today and click on the ‘mail’ tab on Glow to access your email. When I see who is online I will give you the full instructions and order of the story pass.  You will only have to type a few sentences each and hopefully when it’s finished we can have a giggle at our creation.

The East Ayrshire Sumdog Contest is live until tomorrow (Thursday 21st May). When you log on click on tasks and then select East Ayrshire Contest. Answer as any questions as you can for us to be in with a chance of getting on to the leader board, there are 1000 questions. We need 10 people from the class to play along to qualify.

I have also set a grammar contest of 25 questions on synonyms and antonyms.  Remember synonyms are words that mean the same thing such as big/large and antonyms are words that are opposites such as night/day. The top 3 in this contest will receive 200 coins to spend on Sumdog. Good luck.

As we know this is Mental Health Awareness Week and on Monday we thought about acts of kindness. Today I want you to be kind to yourself! So, spend some time today doing something you enjoy and then I would like you to write five things that are amazing about you! Our self-confidence grows when we are kind to ourselves and allow ourselves to talk about the things we do well and are good at.

Have a lovely day P5/6.

Mrs McCaig

Monday 18th May 2020

Good morning!

I hope you managed to enjoy the weekend despite the weather. We planted seeds a few weeks ago so at the weekend we put them into bigger pots to let them spread and grow. We have carrots, chillies, parsley and basil so hopefully as the weeks pass they will keep growing.   What did you all get up to at the weekend? Drop me and email or update your Blog, I really do enjoy sitting down and reading all of your posts.

Pentagons click https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/ and select  week 5 and work your way through the lessons at your own pace.

The top 3 in last week’s Sumdog Competition were Morgan, Daryl, Ryan. Well done boys! It was great to see so many of you involved and it was very close. Keep an eye out for a new competition this week.

IDL –I would also like you to select another point from your KWL board. Try and make this one an art or craft task if you have one.

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week. We have done lots of work in class about the importance of a healthy body and mind and now more than ever we are all thinking about it.  This year the theme is Kindness.  I would like you to have a chat with your family and reflect on all of the acts of kindness you have done during Lockdown.  Remember, it doesn’t have to be something big, as it’s the small things that really count.  You might have made a drink or breakfast for someone, given them a compliment, helped them tidy up or even let them pick what to watch on TV.  I would love to see you list of little kindness deeds.

Have a super Monday to kick start the week.

Missing you all.

Mrs McCaig

Friday 15th May

Good morning everyone and welcome to another Friday.

How are you all this week?  I must be very honest and say I have found this week very challenging.  I am really missing my family and friends, especially my mum who I just want to give a huge hug to.  I have spoken to her every day over the telephone or on FaceTime and this has helped.  I think it is ok to feel a little down some days, staying home and away from our family and friends is a very difficult thing we are being asked to do.  Remember to speak to someone if you are feeling sad or lonely, it really does help.

Maths

Last week we looked at calculating the area of a shape and this week we are going to look at the perimeter. The perimeter is the total distance around the outside of a shape.  The White Rose website has a great video that explains how to calculate the perimeter.  Click on the link below and choose  Summer Term – Week 3 (w/c 4th May) and then Lesson 4.  After you have watched the video try the activity.  The questions get harder as you go through them so try as many as you can.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

I have also set another challenge on Sumdog.  You have until next Friday to complete it – good luck!

Feel Good Friday

I wanted to piggy back on Miss McLean’s idea and reinstate Feel Good Friday.  On a Friday we choose someone in the class and make them feel good! We take their photo and write lots of things we like about them and things that they are good at. Why not choose someone in your family or a friend you haven’t seen in a while and draw a picture of them then write all the things you love about them.  Upload your picture to your blog or email me your finished drawing.

 My email address is roberta.schendel@eastayrshire.org.uk

Keep safe everyone and keep in touch.

Mrs Schendel

Wednesday 13th May 2020

Happy Wednesday everyone.

I hope you are all well and keeping yourselves busy. Well done to those who continue to update their Blogs, I love reading them. It was my birthday on Monday and I had a lovely day despite the lockdown. We went for a huge walk along the river and through the fields and when I came back a birthday cake had been delivered so we spent the day eating our way through it. I also had some lovely video calls with family and friends.

Before school ended we were working hard on our fractions and decimals. Today I would like us to revisit this using some fab online resources.  All you have to do is click the link, watch the videos and complete the activity sheets.  https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4ypscw

We worked hard on the improving the detail of our writing through the use of adjectives, similes and metaphors and we started to look at alliteration and onomatopoeia. Click the link and work through the videos and worksheets. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zn26hbk

Select another item from your topic KWL and work through it at your own pace. I’ve loved seeing the topic work that you have been producing.

Today is also our live email chat so log on at 11am and look out for the group email and simply click ‘reply to all’.  Sit down with a juice and a snack and I will have my coffee and biscuit and we can ‘have a wee blether.’

Take care

Mrs McCaig

Monday 11th May 2020

Good morning!

I hope you had a lovely long weekend.   We had lots of fun in the garden this weekend playing games and we also did a bit more baking – and eating of it! I also had a quiz with my friends by video call which was great fun. I learned some random facts that I am going to try and remember for future quizzes.

So, it has been a number of weeks that we have all been at home and adapting to our new way of life for the time being.  First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has said that we are at home for at least another three weeks. Today I would like you to imagine you work for the Scottish Government and it is your job to share the ‘Stay Home’ message.  Your challenge is to create a campaign to encourage everyone to continue to stay at home and stay safe. You could make a poster, leaflet, cartoon, comic strip, flyer or perhaps a voice recording that could be played on the radio. You might also want to script and record a broadcast that could be shown on TV. Simply record it on a phone or tablet.  You should try to include a range of ways to share your campaign and don’t forget to include persuasive language to really get your message over.

As always send me your finished pieces on email and post them on your Blog. I can’t wait to see how creative you are.

There are also new grammar and division challenges on Sumdog that will run until Wednesday. This week when the challenges are finished I will be announcing the winners and runners-up for each task. Good luck!

Take care

Mrs McCaig

Wednesday 6th May 2020

Good morning everyone, Wednesday always seems to come around so quickly.  I hope that you have had a good week so far and have been enjoying the sun.  We been baking this week and have made pancakes, scones and custard creams.  You learn so many skills when baking as you are measuring ingredients and following instructions. I know lots of you have been baking and I have loved seeing your pictures.

Hannah wanted to share her favourite ‘Fluffy American Pancake’ recipe with you, here it is:

  • 200g self-raising flour, 50g caster sugar, 2 eggs and 120ml milk
  • Add flour and sugar to a bowl, stir in the eggs before gradually stirring in the milk. Mix until smooth.
  • Spoon into a non-stick pan on a medium heat, when it bubbles flip it over.
  • serve warm with any topping you like and enjoy! (Nutella and strawberries is a favourite in my house!) As always send me your pictures and upload them to your Blog.

Literacy Alphabet Challenge – Can you think of a noun, verb and adjective for each letter of the alphabet? Make a list of as many as you can. Remember, a noun is a naming word, a verb is a doing word and an adjective is a describing word.

Just to get you started:  A – apple, applaud, amazing.

Sumdog – Each group has a new times table competition that will run until Friday, there is also a grammar task for you to complete.

VE Day– This Friday is VE Day (Victory in Europe Day).  Below is the link to a short film about this historical day when the Nazis surrendered and ended the war in Europe.  Can you create a newspaper front page reporting the surrender? Consider how the people of Europe would have felt about the news and why they would have felt this way. Remember to think about how a newspaper looks and the features it has. I can’t wait to see some of your work.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/history-ks2-ve-day/z7xtmfr

As always try your best with activities and let me know of any other additional tasks you get up to.  Take care and enjoy some outdoor time safely when you can.

Mrs McCaig

Monday 4th May 2020

Happy Monday everyone, I can’t quite believe that it is May already.  I hope you all had a lovely weekend.  We watched Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4 (again!) and did some drawings of our favourite characters.  We also went out on our bikes and for a walk along the river, I love getting out in the fresh air. As always I would love to hear about your weekend so update your Blog or send me a wee email.

Literacy – Today we are going to practise our listening and note taking skills and the added bonus is you get to watch some TV.  All I want you to do it log on to CBBC and pick and episode of a show you think you might like. Then simply watch the show and make some notes about the characters, plot and setting.

When you have watched the episode I want you to write or record a summary of what happened in the show. Make sure you include key events and the characters and setting.  Once you have written it I would like you to give your opinion on what you liked or didn’t like and who you would recommend it to.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc

Maths – I am sure that lots of you have been practising your Number Talks whilst at home.  I have been showing Hannah some of the videos we recorded before school ended.  She loves the grid method for multiplication and using a number line for addition and subtraction.  Today I would like you to try and record a Number Talk for a strategy of your choice.  Think about the vocabulary you use and explain your thinking.  I can’t wait to see some of your videos.

Topic – Well done to those of you that sent me your topic choice for the term. I would like you to select one of the points from your ‘W’ section of your KWL grid.  All you have do is research this aspect and create a fact file.  Remember to use a range of features like headings and sub-headings, bullet point and pictures/photos. Remember to use your own words within your fact file and to reference your sources just like we did before in ICT. I can’t wait to see the results.

Don’t forget to get outside safely for some fresh air too.  As always I look forward to seeing what you get up to today and that includes any other activities you choose to do at home with your family.

Take care

Mrs McCaig

Friday 1st May

Good morning everyone.  Can you believe we have spent the whole month of April in lockdown?!?  I want to say a big well done to you all.  It has not been easy having to stay home all the time and I know you are missing friends and family.  I think lots of you are even missing school, I know I am!

Well done also for keeping up with your learning.  Everything is so different and it has taken all of us time to adjust to a new way of learning.  Keep going and trying to do a little every weekday, your teachers are giving you lots of tasks and we are keeping track of your work on ReadingWise, ActiveLearn and Sumdog.  We love to keep in touch so remember to keep emailing or posting on your blog to share what you are doing at home.

Maths – Calculating Area

This week we are going to focus on finding the area of a rectangle.

Below is a link to BBC Bitesize and a video which explains how to calculate the area using the formula Area = Length x Breadth.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zqr4jxs/articles/zmynnrd

I have attached some worksheets for you to practise.  There are three different levels – 1 star, 2 stars and 3 stars – just like we do in class sometimes.  Choose which sheet you think best suits you.  You can print it off if you can or read it from the screen and write your answers on a piece of paper.  Sent me an email with a photo of your answers and I will give you feedback.

1 star area worksheet

2 star area worksheet

3 star area worksheet

I have also set a challenge on Area on Sumdog.  You have until next Friday to complete it, good luck!

I look forward to hearing from you and have a great weekend.

Mask Madness

As promised here is a little picture of our masks from today.  Well done to those who completed this task and sent in pictures – I loved seeing your results. Remember you can come back to the tasks at anytime.

Wednesday 29th April 2020

Good morning, I can’t believe it’s Wednesday again already.  I feel like this has been a quick week. I wonder if any of you were as shocked as me to see rain yesterday, it’s been so long since we had any. On the plus side it watered the plants I have outside that I always forget about – they were very thirsty!

If you log on to Sumdog you will see that I have set a spelling challenge for each group as well as a grammar task. There is also a maths challenge for each group that will help you earn coins.  I must say I am finding it hard to beat your scores on some of the Sumdog games, my shooting in ‘Goals’ isn’t great and I always seem to miss when trying to knock over the towers in ‘Junk Pile’.  Keep up the great work.

I will be live on email to chat at 11am. As always I will send out a group email at 11am and all you need to do is click ‘reply to all’ and we can get chatting. For those of you who have joined in so far it has been lovely to hear your stories as I am really missing them.  From paddling pool mishaps to poorly dogs and new goal nets and trampolines, it has been lovely to share this with you all. So log on today at 11am.

The #stayhome drawing tutorial pictures that you have sent have been fantastic.  Today I have an art task for you that I think you will really enjoy.  We will be doing it today as well and I can’t wait.  All you need it some old card from empty boxes lying around or from your recycling. From there you cut out a range of random shapes and colour or paint them before sticking them together to make an abstract mask.  Check out the picture below. I think they look really cool.  I can’t wait to see your finished masks so please remember to post them on your Blog.

As always try to get outside and enjoy some fresh air safely.

Take care and stay safe.

Mrs McCaig

Monday 27th April 2020

Good morning everyone, Monday again!

I hope you are all starting to get back into a routine, we had a better start to the week today than we did last week. It just takes time.

IDL – Last week we picked our topics for term 4. Those of you who haven’t let me know what your topic is can try and email me today. Our first task is just the same as we would do at school together, it’s a KWL board.  This is when we record what we KNOW and what we WANT to know.  You can record it as a mind map, list, diagram, outside with chalk, the choice is yours. Remember we don’t complete the LEARN part until the end of the topic so don’t worry about that. Once you have done it send me a picture of it. I will be doing mine as well.

ART – I thought that since we have been applauding the NHS and essential workers on a Thursday I thought we could use this as our art inspiration.  Simply log on to https://www.artforkidshub.com/how-to-draw/ and pick the tutorial you want to do. There are firefighters, post workers, heath heroes and so much more.  Once you’ve done your picture send a picture and post it on your Blog.  You could even pop it in your window just to say thanks.

Maths – I’m sure that one thing we have all been thinking lots about lately is time. How long things take, what time it is, how long you can play on your phone, when your favourite programme is on, it’s used constantly.  So today’s maths task is time related. Can you find all the examples of time and how you use it throughout the day? It’s completely up to you how you do this. I can’t wait to see the results.

PE – Well done to those who completed the Happy Hundred circuit last week. Today’s circuit is from Daryl.  A word of warning – beware of those mountain climbers! Keep you circuits coming, just email them to me and I will share them with the class.

10 left leg jumps

10 right leg jumps

20 high knees

20 jumping jacks

20 mountain climbers

run round the garden X2

As always stay safe and continue with the other great activities that you have been doing. Email anytime and be sure to update your Blog.

Friday 24th April 2020

Good morning and welcome to another glorious day of sunshine.

I was working at the hub at Auchinleck yesterday and it was lovely to be back in a school and to see the children there but it made me realise how much I am missing oor wee school and all of you!

French
This week I thought we could concentrate on practising some of our French numbers. I have attached the link to the song you love so much and I have also attached the word mat we use to help us.
Maybe you could teach someone in your house to play French bingo. Choose 6 numbers between 0 and 20 or between 20 and 50 and write them down. The caller then shouts out the numbers in French. Make sure you take a turn at being the caller so that you can practise the pronunciation too.

Numbers to 20.

This week I have learned how to use a lawnmower and cut the grass. I think my husband and son (whose job it really is!) will expect me to do it all the time now 😩.

This weekend I plan to relax with a book and enjoy the garden. We are hoping to have a barbecue and my favourite part is the marshmallows at the end.

Send me an email or post on your blog and let me know what you have learned this week and what you plan to do this weekend.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Mrs Schendel

Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Morning,

Happy halfway day.

Thank you so much to those who have sent me their topic choice and updated their Blogs.  If you haven’t done it yet try and make time today or tomorrow to do it.  If it’s taking you a wee bit of time to get a routine up and running again, don’t worry, it’s the same in my house.  We will all get there.

Literacy

On Sumdog I have set a little grammar check-up for you. You have from today until next Wednesday to complete it.  Almost half of you did the last one – let’s see if we can beat that this time.  All you need to do is complete the sentences so that they make sense. There are only ten questions.  On your marks, set, go!

Fitness challenge

We all love PE so I thought it was time we set a fitness challenge. I have a little circuit I want you to set up and try. When you complete it you should post on your Blog how you got on.  Then you need to make up a circuit and email it to me. I will then post each of your circuits on the main Blog for everyone, including me, to try.

The first one is ‘Happy Hundred’ and you should time yourself so that you can get quicker each time.

  • 20 shuttle runs (around 10 metres)
  • 20 star jumps
  • 20 sit ups
  • 20 burpees
  • 20 squats

Good luck!

A Wee Blether

I thought we could have a ‘wee blether’ today online. So, log on to your emails at 11am and I will start the chat with a group message and we can all catch up together in the same chat. All you have to do is click ‘reply to all’ when you have read the email.  We will aim to have the chat live from 11m until 11.30am. Can’t wait to chat to you all later.

Take care and stay safe.

Mrs McCaig

Monday 20th April 2020

Good morning P5/6, welcome to term 4! I can’t quite believe that it’s the final term of the year already.

I hope you had a lovely Easter break and enjoyed the wonderful weather we were lucky enough to have. I would love to hear all about your holiday, so, today’s main task is to update your Blog.    I will be checking them all later today and can’t wait to see how creative you have all been, if you have any photos I would love to see those too.

A new term normally means a new topic in class.  I thought that we might have a little experiment with this and continue this whilst at home – but with a difference.  You are all going to pick you own topic! Yes that’s right, whatever you want to learn about, now is your chance. Each week there will be different topic tasks for you to complete and all you need to do is complete the task and upload it to your Blog.  Please send me an email at some point today to let me know what you have chosen as your topic. I have decided I want to learn about countries and their capital cities.  My geography needs a bit of work so I am going to take the time to improve it and learn along with you.

The sun is shining again today so make sure to spend as much time outside as you can, safely of course. During the holidays we spent lots of time making up games in the garden.  Our favourite was a target game using empty plastic bottles and lining them up on the table.  The aim of the game was to knock as many over with the water gun as possible. It was great fun.

Don’t forget you can log on to Sumdog, Active Learn and Reading Wise to complete some tasks set for you too.

Have a lovely day and take care.

Mrs McCaig

Monday 13th April 2020

Good morning everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely Easter and enjoyed a chocolate treat or two.  I had a lovely weekend enjoying the sunshine in the garden and reading a book that I’ve been meaning to start for months.  Hannah and Rebecca enjoyed doing some Easter crafts but there was no egg decorating this year as we decided to keep what eggs we have for baking.

Mrs Govans posted the wish jar idea on Thursday so we decided to start one in our house using an empty Nutella jar (we have far too many of these). The first thing the girls put into the jar was a sleepover with gran and papa.  I put a little wish in for a big walk around Dumfries House and a HUGE scone at the coffee shop.

This week where we live the window theme is ‘Under the Sea’ so, we have also been busy making mermaid tales, dolphins and whales to decorate the window. I have to say that I have loved seeing everyone’s windows decorated each week.

I have also noticed on my walks that the number of lambs is growing in the fields, there are more flowers around and the grass is bright green.  It reminds me how much I love Spring!

I hope that you are all enjoying the Easter holidays with those at home. I am sure you are finding some really creative ways to fill your time. I’m looking forward to catching up with you all next week as we start term four.

Take care and stay safe.

Mrs McCaig
