I can’t quite believe that this is our last day in Primary 2. It feels really strange to be wishing you a lovely summer on a post, rather than in real life!
I really wanted to say thank you so much to each and every one of you. You are all so hardworking, kind, clever, creative and just magical wee people! I am so proud to have been your teacher this year and you have all made me feel like the luckiest teacher EVER!

I know our year was cut short but we still managed to squeeze A LOT of fun, laughter and hard work into our short year. I have made a wee video of just some of our best bits.

I can’t believe it’s Friday again! This means that we only have 1 week left of Primary 2! You will be hearing more about your new class very soon and next week we plan on having a ‘virtual bump up week’ so keep your eyes on this page to find out a little more.

Good Morning boys and girls!

On Monday I got the chance to go into school, I was so excited to see our lovely wee school again but it was quite strange as there were only a few teachers and no children! I don’t think our classroom has EVER been so quiet and I don’t think I will ever take a classroom full of noisy boys and girls for granted ever again!

It is getting very close to our summer holidays and this is usually a really fun time of year where we get to go on an exciting school trip. Last year our whole school went to Blair Drummond Safari Park and I didn’t want us to miss out on seeing lots of amazing animals this year SO…wait for it… this year we are going on a virtual school trip!!

Happy Monday Primary 2!

I hope you have all had a brilliant weekend. I have spent this weekend taking Skye a walk and visiting my friend in her garden.

Well done to everyone who has been working on their common words and figuring out which ones are a bit tricky and might need some practise. To help you out a little bit, I have added a grid with some fun ideas for practising your words. Remember, sometimes it takes a wee while to remember the spelling of a word. Keep practising and you will get it!

You might want to do some diacritical marking or try out one of our favourite activities, countdown. This is a really simple activity where we set a timer for one minute and try and see how many times we can write our common words down before the time is up. P2 love to do this in class and even try and beat our best scores.

Go for it! You might also want to check out White Rose Maths today, where they have a fab video about making arrays.

This morning, I will be heading into school for the first time since the school closed. I am really looking forward to being in the building again but I know that the classroom just wont feel the same without you all in it! I will be thinking of you all.

It is Friday… again!

Happy Hump Day!

Thank you so much for sending in your ‘Wonders’. I have really enjoyed reading all about what your questions and puzzles are and have found the answers very interesting!

I have been keeping busy by making some tasty treats! It was my friend’s birthday yesterday and I decided to get my apron on and get baking! I made some delicious chocolate brownies and chocolate covered strawberries. They were so tasty!

Today I have a spelling activity for you.

In Primary 2 we have been learning our ‘common words’. These are words that we use all the time that we focus on learning how to spell first.

As we know, all kids learn at their own pace and because of this in P2 we have taken a slightly different approach to learning our spelling words. Instead of a weekly spelling list for all, we have been doing small, one-to-one spelling check-ups to find out how many of the most common words each child has learned. We then choose 12 of the words that we don’t know yet (our tricky words) and focus on them individually for the next wee while. You will have seen your child’s last set of words on their spelling grid.

This ensures that children can make progress at their own pace and allows children who are picking the words up quickly to move onto more challenging words.

After a discussion with one parent, I thought it could be useful to share the common words that we have been working through so you can see which spelling words your child might need to focus on.

There are A LOT of words so it might take a wee while (you might want to try 5 a day, for example) to check which words you know and which ones you don’t. If you do decide to do this wee activity, make sure it is fun! In Primary 2 the kids usually really enjoy doing this and are always so proud to beat their last score.

Good Morning boys and girls. I hope you have all had a great weekend. Thank you SO much for sending in all your pictures and videos from our Virtual Sports Day. It looks like you all had an absolutely brilliant time taking part in all the races with your families. I was knackered just watching you!

This week I have a special job for you. At the start of the last term in school, P2 had just started our very own ‘I Wonder’ floorbook. This was a very, very special project for us that we all LOVED taking part in. The idea was that we all asked a question, something that we had wondered about and then as a team we were going to find out the answers to the questions.

I have added a picture of some of our questions below. We had some VERY interesting questions. We had already worked together to answer some of these, such as ‘How is money made?’ ‘What do dinosaurs eat?’ and ‘How do you make a rainbow?’ but there are lots of ‘wonders’ that we didn’t quite get round to learning about.

This week I would like you to have a wee think about what you wonder, what questions do you have? It doesn’t matter if it is a big question or a small question. Your job is then to work with your family and find out the answer! This might take a wee while, so don’t worry if you don’t manage to do this all in a day!

For number, I have added a link to White Rose Maths, where there are some lessons all about counting in 2s, 5s and 10s which is something we have all been working on. There is also a lesson about equal groups which is a great strategy that P2 have been using to multiply.

Well, it’s Friday!

Today is our ‘Virtual Sports Day’. I hope you have all enjoyed health week and are ready to race!

Our race today is a ‘bean bag race’.

Instead of a bean bag, you could balance a teddy bear or something similar on your head. Try not to drop it as you run from one end of your garden to the other. Why not ask your family to join in and see who manages to get to the other end (without dropping that teddy!) the quickest.

We have also been set a ‘Star Jump Challenge’ by Miss Robb. How many star jumps can you do in 1 minute? Remember 1 minute is 60 seconds.

I would love to see loads of pictures and videos of your race and challenge as possible! I will be taking part too!

Good Morning!

A quick reminder that this week is Health Week! This means that the focus this week is on activities that are great for you and make you feel good!

Thank you to everyone that has kept us updated with what you are getting up to.

Today is ‘Walking Wednesday’ and it means exactly what is says on the tin! Today is all about getting out in the fresh air. I know it is not as sunny today as it has been but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a refreshing walk, just remember to take a jumper or jacket!

Remember, at the end of Health Week is our ‘Virtual Sports Day’ on Friday. P2 will be participating in a ‘bean bag race’. Instead of a bean bag, you could balance a teddy bear or something similar on your head. Try not to drop it!

Good Morning Primary 2!

As you might already know from reading the main blog, this week is our Health Week where we will be doing lots of different activities that are all about staying healthy and feeling good. Our activities will all lead up to the main event  on Friday which will be our very own Virtual Sports Day!

Mrs Ferguson had a brilliant idea for each day of the week to have a different theme. I have listed them below, along with some ideas that you might want to try out with your family.

  • Mindfulness Monday

We are quite lucky in P2 as we have already had a little bit of practise of ‘Mindfulness’ when we did our Treehouse Meditation not too long ago! Mindfulness is all about noticing how your mind and body feel and taking some time to slow down and pay attention. It can be quite tricky!   • TikTok/Try it Tuesday

Some of the teachers have had A LOT of fun learning some new TikTok dances during lockdown. Dancing is such a great way to look after our physical and mental health. It keeps us active, gets our bodies moving AND can make you feel great! Why don’t you try and learn a dance with your family? Put on one of your favourite songs and have a boogie!

  • Walking Wednesday

I know that many of us have  been doing plenty of walking since the start of lockdown. It is so important to stay active and get out in the fresh air. Today you could plan a walk in the sunshine with your family.

  • Thoughtful Thursday

Today is all about looking after our friends and family and making sure that they know how much we care about them. I would like you to have a think and choose someone very special to you. It could be a friend, a member of your family, a neighbor or someone else you love. When you have chosen your special person then it is up to you to do something to make them feel good. Maybe you could paint them a picture? Or write them a note? You could make a card for them, bake a cake or even offer to help out by cleaning up or helping to make dinner. Little acts of kindness are so important and not only will this task make your special someone happy… I bet it puts a smile on your face too.

  • Fruity Friday

Today’s challenge might just be my favourite one! It is definitely the most delicious. Today on ‘Fruity Friday’ I would like you to fuel your body for our Virtual Sports Day with some tasty fruit. You could even try and get creative with your fruit, I have added some pictures of some fruity masterpieces below!

Good Morning Primary 2! ☀️

It is Friday…AGAIN!!

I have had so much fun chatting to some of you over the past couple of days. I haven’t managed to call everyone yet because I am too much of a chatterbox and it is taking a little bit longer to get through everyone than I thought it would. Oops!

If you haven’t had a call from me yet, don’t worry! I haven’t forgotten about you! I will be making some more calls today and at the start of next week. If you have had a missed call or a voicemail, I will make sure to try again.

Today I have a numeracy activity from White Rose Maths. I have added a link to some lessons all about number bonds and fact families. You can choose one to try out or work your way through the lessons. I also came across a great wee idea for creating your own jigsaw out of an old cereal box! It is really simple and a great way to practise your cutting skills, problem solving and do some recycling. I think I am going to give it a go today.

Good Morning Primary 2!

I hope you all had a great long weekend. Today’s task is all about growing a sentence and turning a short sentence into a more interesting one!

For example;

What: I waited in a line.

Adjective: I waited in a long line.

Where: I waited in a long line at the shop.

Why: I waited in a long line at the shop because I wanted to buy some sweeties.

Can you try and grow your own sentence by adding an adjective, a where and a why? You could try it out with these sentences below or you could make your own.

  1. The dog was running.

  2. I went to the shop.

  3. I washed the dishes.

Friday again!

Good Morning, I can’t believe another week has passed! It sometimes feels like a very long day stuck inside but I always feel like Friday comes around so quickly!

Today on BBC Bitesize there are some problem solving questions that I would like you to try. Lots of us found problem solving questions very tricky when we started to do them in Primary 2 but were starting to become more confident. Remember, it is OK to get a pencil and paper and do some maths drawings to help you work them out. In fact, you know I always want to see working on your whiteboard when we are problem solving. Challenge number 2 will definitely get your brain working this morning!

Good Morning Primary 2!

I hope you are all feeling great today. It has been lovely to read some of your messages and posts over the past few days. I know some of you have already received your report cards and if you haven’t then you can expect it in the post very soon. I just wanted to let you all know how proud I am of all your hard work in Primary 2. You are all amazing and I am the proudest teacher, EVER!

Today, I wanted to share a little number challenge that you could try out at home. At school we do something called NumberTalks throughout the school and before the school closure Primary 2 had just started some work on ‘friendly numbers’. This is when you take a number and make it much easier to work with.. or as we like to call it ‘friendly’. This skill is something that will be used as part of lots of different strategies throughout the school.

Remember Primary 2, friendly numbers are number that end in a 0.

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60,70,80,90,100 and so on.

For example… to make the number 11 friendly you have to – 1.

  • to make the number 19 friendly.. you have to + 1 (to get 20)
  • to make the number 63 friendly.. you have to – 3 (to get 60)
  • to make the number 88 friendly.. you have to +2 to get the number 90 or you could – 8 to get 80.

I would like you to choose some numbers between  0-100 and show me what you have to do to make it friendly. Do you have to add something on? or take something away?

To start and get your brain warmed up you could try making these numbers friendly ( 4,6,7,8,9) before you challenge yourself with some bigger numbers.

Good Morning Primary 2!

This morning I would like to share with you some guided meditation. ‘Meditation’ is just a fancy word for stopping to relax, close your eyes and concentrate on something. Today’s meditation is a really good one all about a ‘Secret Treehouse’. Sometimes it can be a bit tricky to concentrate on just one thing so it might be a little bit of a challenge! The more we practise our listening and concentrating skills – the better they will get.

I am going to be doing the meditation today, too. When you are finished, you can let me know how you got on.

When you are finished the meditation you could try and do a bit of writing all about your own secret treehouse.

What can you taste?

Good Morning Primary 2!

I hope you all had a lovely long weekend.

Today I wanted to share with you a wee video that we have all watched before in class. It is a Dojo video all about the Power of Yet.

Do you remember watching that video about Katie in class? The word ‘Yet’ is a small but very powerful word. It is important not to give up when you find something tricky. Today, I want you to have a think about something that you can’t do…yet.

I can’t tie my laces…yet.

I can’t count up in 3’s…yet.

I can’t spell my second name…yet.

I can’t do a cartwheel…yet.

I can’t do 5 keepie uppies…yet.

 

These are just some examples but you can have a think about something that you can’t do yet. It is then your job over the next couple of days or weeks to practise, practise, practise until you have mastered it.

Remember that nobody was born an expert in anything. All the footballers, singers, artists, chefs, dancers or athletes you know had to work really hard to get very good at what they do.

For the past couple of weeks I have been trying to get better at fancy handwriting called Calligraphy. I am not the best at it YET but with some more practise and a little bit of help from Mrs Cook I am sure I will get much better.

Good Morning Primary 2!

I hope you are all feeling great on this sunny Wednesday morning.

Today, I have a special task for you. On Friday, there is a celebration day called VE Day & this day stands for ’Victory in Europe Day’. I’m sure that on Friday, Newsround will have a special covering of VE day that you could watch at home. However, today I would like you to chat to the adults in your house, phone your Gran or Papa or even ask a neighbour (from a safe distance) if they call tell you more about VE day.

You might find out a bit about the bravery of lots of different people during the War. Some people even received some very special badges for their bravery. Today I thought you could design and create your very own bravery badge. You could do this by drawing it or by making it out of any materials you have around the house. I can’t wait to see them!

Good Morning P2!

I hope you have all have had a lovely weekend. I kept myself busy by trying to do some DIY around the house. I must admit, I am not very good at DIY yet but I always try my best! I did manage to paint the living room and it is looking fab! (If i do say so myself 😉 )

BBC Bitesize also have a great lesson today all about number bonds to 10 and 20. We have learned a lot of number bonds in class. Number bonds are really important for all areas of numeracy. Some of us are already very good at remembering our number bonds to 10. Today,  you could challenge yourself by exploring number bonds to 20.

Today I also thought it might be a good idea to revisit some of the sounds we have learned so far in Primary 2.

The ay sound is in lots of words like day, say, play, Monday and stay. Can you think of any other words that have the ‘ay’ sound in it?

There is another way to make the ‘ay’ sound. Can you remember it?

That’s right! We can make the ‘ay’ sound with the letters ‘ai’ too. Here is Geraldine’s video.

Do you think you could come up with some words containing the ‘ai’ sound? Maybe today you could write some interesting sentences, or do some diacritical marking.

Happy Friday!  

Today is a the start of a brand new month. It is the first day of May! I can’t quite believe it.

‘Friday 1st May 2020’ is the long date. Could you try and write the short dotty date?

This is what we usually do in class when it is the start of a new month.

There is another class tradition that we usually do every Friday in class. It is called ‘Feel Good Friday’.

Usually, before home time on a Friday we choose someone in the class and make them feel good! We usually take their photo and write all the things we love about them around their picture. Sometimes we write things they are good at, things they have done to help us or just something we really like about them.

The picture with all the lovely comments around it is then printed off and one gets stuck up on the wall and one goes home with the special person. Have you taken your ‘Feel Good Friday’ home with you yet?

Today I wondered if you could make a ‘Feel Good Friday’ for someone special to you. It might be your mum, your wee brother, your best friend, someone you miss or even your neighbour. You could draw a picture of them and write all the lovely things you can think of that will make them feel good around it.

I really love doing this on a Friday as the special person always has a great big cheesy smile on their face as they listen to all the great things about themselves. These compliments also always make the boys and girls giving them out feel great too. I always leave school on a Friday a very happy and proud teacher after listening to it.

Happy Wednesday!

Today I thought we could try something that I used to love to do when I was wee! Make a coded letter! This is a really fun activity and means you can send secret messages. How fun!

There are lots of way to make a coded message or letter but today I thought we could try and create one using emoji’s. Have a look at the code breaker below and use your problem solving skills to try and work out the secret message I have left for you.

The live lesson on ‘notes and coins’ for P2 starts at 11:30am but don’t worry if you miss it because there are lots of other games and activities you can play on the website.

The last time we tried a money challenge at home lots of you were able to add and total coins. Maybe today you could challenge yourself and try and work out change.

Core – If you had 10p and you spent 4p at the shop, how much change would you get?

Challenge – If you had £1 and you spent 60p at the shop, how much change would you get?

Can anyone remember how many pennies are in £1? Remember you can use real coins, counters, a number line or some math drawings to help you work out your calculation.

Today I also thought you might like to try out an activity that we often enjoy in class. It is called ‘write about the picture’. Can you try and write about what is happening in the picture below?

Remember sentences need to have a capital letter, full stop and finger spaces. If you want to really make your sentence interesting then remember to include an adjective and a connective such as and, but or because.

The picture I have chosen is from a fantastic website. I have linked it below for future use and in case you want to choose a different picture to write about instead.

Good Morning and Happy Wednesday!

I had a wee chat with Mrs Watt yesterday, she is hoping that Goofy is OK and knows that he will be missing everyone in Primary 2!

Today I wanted to share a fantastic resource from BBC Bitesize. Click on the link below and select ‘Start a lesson’ then ‘P2’.

Here you will be able to select a lesson.  Today, the lesson is all about describing words. We have learned about these words before in class. They are called ‘adjectives’ and they help make your writing more interesting. Could you watch the video and try out one of the 3 activities?

For numeracy, remember that you can keep logging into SumDog and ActiveLearn where I am able to set challenges and see how you are getting on.

Today on BBC Bitesize there is a video about counting up in 5s. Can you practise counting in 5s? Can you count up to 20 in 5s? 50? 100?

You might want to use your snakes and ladders 100 square or make a number line to help you.

Good Morning Primary 2!

I hope you have all had a brilliant Easter holiday. Did you manage to get outside in the lovely sunshine? I would love to hear about what you have been getting up to. Remember, you can update your personal blog.

Today would have been the start of Term 4 in School and I am excited to get back into more of a routine. I will begin updating this page again on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday with some ideas and activities you could try out. Don’t worry if you decide to do something different instead, I would love to hear about that too!

Today I have recorded myself reading a wee story. It it called ‘Lucy’s in Lockdown’ and it was written by an author named Chris Duke. Can anyone see another name on the front cover? That is the illustrator. Can you remember what the illustrator’s job is?

I hope you enjoyed the story. I did because it reminded me that we all have lots of different feelings and that it is OK to feel them.

Why do you think Lucy’s Hair turned red?

Who did Lucy see when she looked out of the window?

Do you think Maxi Bear manged to cheer Lucy up?

Lucy’s magical hair changed colour with her emotions. It is sometimes red when she is angry, sometimes purple and sometimes it is blue when she feels a bit sad.

Today, it might be a good idea to think about how you are feeling. What colour would your hair be today?

Would it be bright yellow because you are so happy to be at home with your family? Would it be green because you are feeling a bit jealous that your big brother still has lots of Chocolate eggs left to eat? Maybe your hair is blue or red like Lucy’s hair in the story.

Why don’t you draw a picture of what colour your hair would be today. I would love to see it.

Happy Easter!

I hope everyone has had a lovely Easter weekend. I spent my time eating lots of chocolate (maybe too much!) and reading my book. It was a very different Easter for me but it is one that I wont forget.  My big sister Kim and my friend’s little girl Marley, both had their birthday this weekend. I couldn’t visit them like  I normally would but we still managed to make it a special day by all getting together on FaceTime.  Luckily,  Marley lives very close to me so I was able to leave a little card on her doorstep whilst out on my daily walk.

I hope you managed to make some memories this weekend too!
