Mary’s Meals Backpack Project

Auchinleck Academy handed over 33 filled backpacks to Mary’s Meals – plus donations to fill several more – on the first leg of their journey to Malawi.

Many children receiving Mary’s Meals don’t have basic learning tools such as pencils and notepads.

You can support them to get the most out of their lessons by donating a backpack or a few of the things they need. For many children, a Mary’s Meals backpack will be the first gift they have ever received.

Each backpack contains: notepad, pens, pencils, crayons, eraser, ruler, sharpener, pencil case, spoon, shorts or skirt, t-shirt or dress, flip-flops or sandals, towel, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, small ball.

We are collecting all year round. Items can be cheap or second hand – please hand in any of these items, especially backpacks, to the school office at any time – Mr Lynch and Mr Deeney will ensure they help a child in Malawi.

We also continue to raise funds to support our sponsored school, Jebbeh Kiazolu school in Liberia, and this is our main focus, together with Cumnock Academy.

Enterprise Group Recycling Project – School Uniforms

The Auchinleck Academy Enterprise group are looking to recycle school uniforms.  We would be very grateful if everyone could bring in the uniforms that they are finished with so we can wash and reuse them.

This is an excellent project aimed at tackling Poverty within Education and the young people have received funding from the Participatory Budgeting Event but we can’t do it without your help.  Therefore if you have shirts/skirts/trousers/blazers/jumpers/cardigans we will wash and iron them to give out to those who are in need.  If you also have old school bags, we will wash, repair and re-use them for the backpack project which helps the homeless people.

Please bring them in to school and hand them to your guidance teacher or to  Mary Gladwell by the end of the week.  Many thanks for your help, we couldn’t do it without you!

Local MSP Employment Fair – Friday 1st June 2018

Local MSP Jeane Freeman has invited all senior pupils from Auchinleck Academy to the Employment Fair hosted by herself on Friday 1st June at

New Cumnock Town Hall, 31-33 Castle, New Cumnock, KA18 4AN from 9am – 12pm

She has invited a cross-section of private, public and third sector businesses and organisations, with vacancies available, which she hopes will highlight opportunities available to people, young and not so young who are looking for employment, training opportunities or simply to give school leavers an idea of what they might wish to do.

Transport is available from the school to the event and school uniform should be worn.

If you are interested in attending this event please contact the school office on 01290 420617 by Friday 18th May 2018

Practical Cake Class

National 5 Practical Cake Craft recently completed their final cakes which will go towards the SQA qualification. They each researched, designed, baked and decorated a celebration cake which needed to incorporate a total of five cake decorating techniques. Some fantastic skills were demonstrated and it took a lot of time and patience to complete them to such a high standard.

Mary’s Meals Backpack Project

So far we have filled eight backpacks and there have been a lot more donations but no more backpacks to put them in! Please look out old backpacks so we can fill them.

We are also short of flipflops, little boys and girls tops, shorts and skirts, and towels (full list below).

One month to go, so a big effort now would make the difference to the children of Malawi and Liberia.

Full list: Old backpack, crayons, towels, spoons, flip-flops, skirts, shorts, t-shirts, rulers, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, tennis balls, pencils, rubbers, sharpeners, notebook/jotter.

Any donations can be handed in to the school office or to Mr Deeney, Mrs Devine or Mr Lynch

Thanks to pupils, parents and staff for your generosity so far.
