We received information about a free 11-month film course. Details below…

We are excited to launch a new FREE project – the Edinburgh Youth Cinema School.

We are recruiting 30 young people in S1-S6 to take part in a free 11-month film course at Bellfield in Portobello, Edinburgh. The project, headed by Scottish Bafta-winning actor and co-director of Edinburgh Youth Theatre, Shauna Macdonald, has been funded by Screen Scotland in partnership with Edinburgh Youth Theatre

Two separate courses are available – online and in person.  Young people are welcome to register for both or just one; however, as spaces are limited, we cannot guarantee a place on both.  (Please ensure they register for the correct course.)

We are looking for young people who want to learn more about how to make movies and all departments of the film and television industry.  This 36-week course will be delivered in four blocks and will cover the fundamentals of filmmaking, including idea generation, storytelling, production roles, shot types, directing, acting for screen, editing and lighting. By week 20, the young people on the in-person course will be shooting film scenes while online students will be working independently on their own films at home, with support from the course leader.

By the end of the course, whether online or in-person, the aim is that each student will have created their own show reel, experienced and gained a good working knowledge of all departments and created their own short film from idea conception to editing. By the end of the year, the students will have the skills to understand and work to professional standards within the industry.

In-person classes only: We will be visited by 10 industry professionals who will deliver 3-hour masterclasses. Guests include: Peter Mackie Burns (director, Mayflies), Stef Smith (writer, Float), Ruth Paxton (director, The Banquet), John McPhail (director, Anna and the Apocalypse), Philip John (director Outlander, Annika), Prano Bailey- Bond (director, Censor) and Iain Davidson (director Scots Squad, The Scotts).
