Pond Dipping Part 2!

This morning we had a proper pond dipping session (in an actual pond!) at the Wetlands with Richard! Richard kindly put on this extra session for Kirkcolm boys and girls so we could have a chance to see all the actual wildlife present in the pond environment. It was a great way to spend the sunny morning and you can see from the photos: we managed to find a lot of interesting pond dwelling creatures! 🐟🦟🦗

Thank you so much for taking the extra time to do this for us Richard, it was a fantastic experience for the pupils and we are very grateful 🤗🤩😀

Week 2 of Forest Schools – Ropes!

This week we went outside for some Rope work with Richard for our Forest Schools input!

We looked at how we could make use of the trees around us and create tension between ropes to create a swing and a tightrope! We took it in turns to delegate the job of swinging to the friends we trust the most! (very telling) And then we all had a turn on the tightrope… Some more successfully that others! 👏🚶‍♂️🚶‍♀️

Another great in put! We look forward to getting stuck into an Outdoor Games Day next week 🏀🥎🥍

Logan Gardens Trip

Today we spent our Friday in the wonderful Logan Botanical Gardens! This is an annual trip for the pupils which allows them to explore the rich environment for learning that the gardens have to offer and they always have a wonderful time!

P1-4 went on a Teddy Bear’s Picnic so they got to bring their cuddly toys with them and embark on a walk around the gardens following a bear and discussing what animals (and humans!) need to survive. They discussed SWAF!

  • Shelter
  • Water
  • Air
  • Food

P5-7 explored aspects of photography by walking around the gardens and looking at how we can correctly frame a photo and capture the beauty of the nature around us! This ended in them taking some photos with some digital cameras! (which many pupils did not know how to use which made Mrs Morrison feel very old indeed…)

It was a lovely day which ended with a picnic on the grass and a wee wander around the garden for the pupils. many thanks to the Botanical Gardens trust for inviting us along every year for this rich experience!

The Cooking Continues with Viking Cookies!

Today P1-4, with the expert help and leadership from Miss Douglas and Miss Bennewith, tackled some viking recipes today! Pupils made viking bread and Viking cookies with some very authentic recipes sourced by Miss D, with perhaps a few fun tweaks! (who can say no to some chocolate chips!?) 🍪🍞

Looks like pupils had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed sampling the efforts of their labour! 😋

Spring Rolls to Start the Day!

Today we were very lucky to welcome Mrs Shannon from the Home Economics Department at the Academy to do some cooking with the boys and girls! Mrs Shannon came up with the excellent idea to link the recipe to our Buddhism topic in R.M.E so they made spring rolls! 🥕🥗

Boys and girls had an excellent time chopping, peeling and grating their ingredients before carefully wrapping them up in some filo pastry! They results were fabulous and all the children sampled the efforts of their hard work.

This was such a great opportunity for the pupils and has hopefully inspired more cooking in the future! A Huge thank you to Mrs Shannon for coming into do this and she is welcome back anytime! 😊👍👏

P7 Visit the Academy!

Just look at those cheery faces! P7 pupils from Kirkcolm and Leswalt headed off for a fun morning of learning at Stranraer Academy today as part of their transition process.

3rd pupils were our guides and met us at the front door to take us to the Dance Studio where we joined Sheuchan P7s for a Stranraer Academy true/false quiz with Mr Hyslop. From there, we enjoyed an Art lesson with Mrs Hyslop exploring Amsterdam street art and a Science lesson with Mrs McHallum investigating acids and alkalis.

To round our morning off nicely, we ventured to the canteen and enjoyed a tasty lunch.

Safe to say, we all had a fabulous morning!

Thanks to Stranraer Academy, Mr Hyslop, Mrs Patterson, our guides Ruby and Brogan and Mrs Hyslop and Mrs McHallum for a fun morning.

Really looking forward to those three days in June now…!

A Very Small Visitor Today!

Today we were very happy to welcome Mrs McHarg back into the building! With her very small companion – little Harris!

Harris absolutely delighted the boys and girls and had all the staff fawning over him 😍 We loved seeing Mrs McHarg and we hope to see more of them both as the time passes and watch him grow! Always welcome for a visit 💖

Bowlers on the Green

P1-4 have been doing Bowling as their P.E focus this term and the lovely people at the Kirkcolm Bowling Club have been trying to get them trained up! We already had a visit from them earlier this term but today the class got to make their way for a sunny day Bowling on the green! A chance to really put their developing skills to the test and an excellent way to spend an afternoon in the sunshine. Looks like they had a great time! 😎☀️🌞

Week 1 of Forest Schools

We have been incredibly lucky to have been able to source the expertise of Mr Richard Pattchet, a leader in delivering Forest Schools, for a block of inputs to the boys and girls across both Leswalt and Kirkcolm for the next 6 weeks!

Richard came to us for week 1 today and took both classes out for a chance to examine some wildlife! P1-4 went on a bug hunt and up turned many an item in the playground and found many a bug on their way! They learned a lot of different facts today like; centipedes only have 50-60 legs (not 100!) and worms really do grow back when cut! 🐛

P5-7 went pond (burn) dipping down by Fisher’s Lane and we sampled a few different spots and eventually at the bridge we hit it lucky by finding some Caddisfly Larva, a very clever little thing which sticks random bits of twigs to it’s body to camouflage itself and a little fish! 🐟

It was a very good session and we all (myself included…) learned a lot from Richard!

Excited for what next week has in store with… Ropes!

A Glorious Mini Walk

Wow! I’m not sure how in the unpredictable Scottish weather, we constantly manages to swing a beautiful sun splitting the sky day for the annual Kirkcolm Mini Walk? – But we will enjoy every second of it! ☀😎🌞

How exciting that the Mini Walk has rolled around again, it was wonderful to see all the boys and girls giving it their best efforts going round the loop and the volume of pupils taking on the extra loop for a chance to secure their name on the trophy has been so uplifting! Everyone gave this their best effort today and I am sure you can see that from the rosy red cheeks and big cheesy smiles in the photos! 🏃🏽‍♂️🏃🏽‍♀️💨

A huge thank you to Jemima for taking all the wonderful photos for us, to Jack Milroy for allowing us to use his field in our loops, Miss Gordon in the office for taking on the high stress role of recording the results and a massive thank you to Sheila McGrory and the rest of the parent council for their efforts in organising another successful event! 👌🏻👍🏻👐🏻

We cannot wait to hear how much the boys and girls have managed to raise so they can have lots of fun on their school trip this year!

The results for our top finishers are as follows…

Boys:

1st – Ivan Turtle 🥇

2nd – Freddie Adams 🥈

3rd – Lyle McCulloch 🥉

Girls:

1st – Phoebe Manson 🥇

2nd – Paige Neill 🥈

3rd – Kendall Alexander 🥉 (Wow! Some effort from a P1!)
