Burns Lunch

This lunchtime we all enjoyed our annual Burns Lunch, organised and hosted by the P7 pupils. Over the past two weeks, they have planned, improved and practiced their speeches, learned poems and helped with the organisation of the meal. This hard work paid off, this afternoon, with a very successful lunch.

dscn1167

Ewan and Jay worked well as a team to Chair the Ceremony and make sure the guests knew what was happening.

dscn1191

Codie used her organisation skills well, to bring in the haggis and Jay reminded us of what a ‘Chieftain o the pudding race’ it was, in his clear recitation of the Address!

dscn1189 dscn1193

After saying The Selkirk Grace, everyone tucked into their Haggis, Neeps and Tatties.

dscn1181

Both Molly and Codie, helped us all learn a little more about the reason people, all over the world, celebrate Robert Burns’ life, in their Immortal Memory.

dscn1202

Then it was time for Conall and Josh to Toast the Lassies. Their speech caused quite a stir and a few red faces!

dscn1229

But the Lassies got their own back with their Reply to the Laddies; there were quite a few laughs at their expense!

dscn1231

After the speeches, the lunch was finished with a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne.

Once again, many thanks to everyone else who helped make our Burns’ Lunch such a success: Mrs Kirk and the kitchen staff, for the lovely food, P6 children for serving it and the P1-5 children who made the colourful, Scots’ themed, table mats!

Scots’ Poetry Competition

This event is now in it’s second year at Dalry Primary and once again, all the teachers have been very impressed and proud of the hard work every child in the school has put in to learning their poems. Children have been seen taking copies of their poems outside, during playtimes, to learn verses and practice their expression and actions.

On Monday afternoon, Miss Joss, Mrs Devlin and Mrs Turner swapped classes to listen to each child recite their poem and give them marks for how clearly they spoke and the expression they used, as well as any actions they added to make it even more entertaining! We all agreed that all the children made a great effort with their recitations and had obviously worked hard at home to make them as good as they could. Once the teachers’ judging had finished, the top three scoring children, from each year group were told they were through to the competition final!

The final took place, in the hall, on Tuesday afternoon. The whole school were throughly entertained by the all the finalists, who recited their poems beautifully! We were very grateful to both Mrs Porteous and Miss McCron for their help as judges. They too were very impressed with the standard of all the finalists and said that they had found it difficult to choose only a first, second and third place for each class. Nonetheless, after lots of discussion, their decisions were made.

Congratulations to all our finalists!

Galloway Dark Skies Observatory Visit

On Monday evening, after school, pupils in P5/6/7 went on an adventure, deep into the Galloway Forest near Dalmellington! Their mission was to learn about how they could see more, in the night sky, using the telescopes at the Observatory.

In P5/6/7, as part of our Interdisciplinary, Topic work, we have been learning about planets in our Solar System so, living so near to the UK’s first Dark Park meant that a trip was the ideal opportunity to learn more through a truly interactive experience.

In class we have watched films about the different planets, stars and moons in our Solar System, as well as carrying out investigations; to find out the role gravity plays in keeping planets, including Earth, orbiting around the sun. We’ve even used scaled models, to calculate and try to understand more clearly, the massive distances between planets and their distances from the Sun.

However, the joy of seeing some of these things, such as the planet Venus, in the sky above us, really impressed us and helped us with our understanding of our Solar System. We all agreed the experience of seeing how an observatory works and using a real telescope was well work the visit on such a cold, windy night!

Friday Fun Time’s Bird Club

Bird Club have been busy preparing for the Big Schools’ Bird Watch in 2 weeks time, by making our school more ‘bird friendly.’

The group started by looking for areas around the school that already encouraged birds into our playground,  We also observed the types of birds that were in and around the area.

We then decided to adapt and improve an area at the front of the school that would become a ‘bird friendly sanctuary’ for our feathered friends.

This Friday, Bird Club set to work, building 2 bird boxes, making bird cakes and fat balls and filling peanut feeders.

We look forward to seeing the numbers and varieties of birds in our playground increase and hope that you enjoy watching the bird sanctuary evolve overtime as much as we will…

If you’ve got an idea of what we could call the ‘bird sanctuary,’ please let Mrs Devlin know. Your idea might be the chosen name!

Scots’ cuisine!

This term P3,4,5 have been cooking and tasting some traditional Scottish dishes with our H.E. teacher Mrs Farquhar.

Last week the pupils made cranachan, a tasty dessert made from yogurt, berries and biscuits.

Today the pupils made haggis and neep parcels, as an acknowledgement of Robert Burns’ birthday yesterday.

There were plenty of positive comments from everyone, even though a few were unsure about tasting haggis.

‘I don’t like haggis, but this is lovely’ – Finlay

‘It’s so yummy!’ – Elizabeth

Café Francias

Before the Christmas holidays, children in P5 and 6 had been extending their vocabulary, in French, so that they could ask for food and drink, politely, in a French café. Today we used the language we have been learning to make and take orders for food in our very own café, in the classroom! Everyone had the opportunity to be a waiter/waitress and a customer.

Different French foods were sampled and at the end of the session, we gave our opinions, once again, in French, about how we felt about the different flavours.

Christmas Fayre

If you’re looking for the ultimate festive decoration to dress your table this Christmas, then look no further!

Pupils in P5/6/7 have been working hard, all this morning to make these wonderful Floral Christmas Crackers. I think you’ll agree they have made an excellent job of them.

If you’d like to purchase one, or perhaps a handcrafted  lantern or Robin Christmas Tree decoration, come on down to the School’s Christmas Fayre, tomorrow morning, in the school gym: 10am-11.30am!

The ‘Lost’ Property Mountain

Since the beginning of the session, the amount of lost property lying in the corridor and in the ‘lost property’ cupboard in the Primary Foyer has grown to unmanageable amounts. All pupils are encouraged to collect and take away items of clothing at the end of each day as they collect their bags, however these items remain unclaimed.

There are:

  • 50 unnamed school jumpers (at least!)
  • 8 coats
  • school trousers and skirts
  • unnamed shorts, t-shirts and trainers
  • hats, gloves and scarves

If your child is missing any items of clothing, please encourage them to collect them before the Christmas holidays. Alternatively if you would like to come and search the lost property and claim back any of your child’s missing items, please contact the School Office before Wednesday.

Lights…Camel…A…MAZING!!!

Dalry Primary performed their version of the Christmas Nativity ‘Lights, Camel, Action!’ last night at the Primary and Secondary Christmas Show.

All pupils performed their parts brilliantly (with some hilarious ad-libbing!) and sang their hearts out. They have made their teachers, school staff and parents extremely proud of them.

We certainly have Confident Individuals in this school…a huge well done everyone! What will we get up to next year???

DVD copies of the show will be available soon…watch this space!
