P3,4,5 were investigating different ways to read the time. We looked at modern ideas like digital watches and then learned that you can actually tell the time using the sun’s position in the sky. People used sundials to tell the time of the day in the past. We all made sundials using a variety of materials. Here’s one example made from Kalen’s pencil, a garden cane and a hula hoop, it certainly worked well. We mapped the position of shadow cast on the ground by the cane throughout the day and noticed that the shadow motived with the hours.

“It was something new, I didn’t know about sundials before.” Amos

“It was very fun and I learned something new.” Lucy

“I can’t believe it actually worked!” Preston

“Sundials are fun and they work, we move around the sun!” Joe

History Detectives

Today P5/6/7 took on the role of war time evacuees and took a trip back in time to see what life was like during World War two.

We got to explore a real Anderson Shelter and get a feel for what is would be like to be in one. We all thought it would be a little cramped for a whole family. It was very hot and very smelly down there!

We got to see what uniform the RAF pilots wore and the seats that were in their aircraft. We also saw some of the weapons they used! This was very exciting.

After looking at all the little details that make up a RAF pilot we got to see where it was all controlled from. This meant going up the control tower and learning about how all the planes were tracked and monitored. We were surprised by the old type writers they had to use back then and thought about how slow they might have been. We looked at a board that tracked all the planes as they left the air field and where they were going. We could also see the ones that didn’t make it back!

In the back ground of this room there was a strange beeping sound which we worked out was Morse code. Do you know why we used Morse code in the war?

Finally, we got to take the driving seat and sit in the cockpit of an aircraft! This was amazing as we got to flick all the buttons and pretend that we were really flying the plane. This took team work as there was space for a pilot and co-pilot, but they had to do the same thing.

We had a fantastic day at the aviation museum and got to see our learning come to life in front of our eyes!

Something we will never forget.

The Respiratory System

P3,4,5 are continuing to widen their knowledge of the body this week and have been learning about the Respiratory System.

We learned about the job of the lungs and the names of the parts of the respiratory system.

We then had a chance to measure our lung capacity by blowing into a Peak Flow Meter. We investigated as to why our readings were all different. Finlay stated that a sporty person’s lung capacity would be bigger than someone that doesn’t do sport. We discussed why this might be true.

Here are some photos of the class measuring their lung capacity using the Peak Flow Meter.

The Nursery have been outdoors everyday and have made some improvements to their Outdoor Area. We have completed our Mud Kitchen, planted some herbs and a potato plant. We were given some logs from the Forestry Commission. David made us a bus, which is great fun!

Fruity Friday!

Today is our second Fruity Friday! Last week, the children prepared and distributed pieces of melon for every pupil to sample. This week they have prepared pineapple. Here are some photos of the children preparing and sampling this week’s fruit.

Soccer Superstars!

A very well done to Dalry Football Team for their fantastic performance at the Paul Jones Football Tournament yesterday evening. They played really well and showed great sportsmanship, even though the scores weren’t always to their advantage. Good luck for the next games girls and boys!

Go Team Dalry!

Gardening Club update…busy, busy bees

This week and last have been exceptionally busy for our keen gardeners!

We’ve had to tend to all the vegetable and plants that we have been growing by weeding and watering them regularly.

We also wanted to improve the front of our playground, making it more bright, colourful and inviting. A member of our group suggested filling welly boots with seeds to grow flowers in. We thought this was a great idea so got to it during Friday Fun Time last week. The result looks fantastic, all we need to do now is wait….look after them carefully, water them each day to encourage the wild flower and sweet pea seeds to grow. Watch this space!

We spent this afternoon’s  session (Tuesday 24th May) watering and also planting some more bean plants in our School Vegetable Garden. Everything is looking very fruitful and all out gardeners are very keen to keep our garden blooming.

Lots of our plants have been kindly donated by Mr Goodwin and members of our community. Many thanks to goes to them.

If you have any plants, particularly flowers that are surplus in your garden, the Garden Club would happily take very good care of them in ours.

Poo!

This week P3,4,5 have been widening their knowledge of the biological systems. This week we have been looking at DIGESTION.

We learned all about how food is digested and all the names of the digestive system, labelling them on a diagram.

Mrs Devlin then asked us the question ‘So, what is poo?’

We helped her to model the process of digestion using real food and items to represent the digestive system. We even had green ‘bile’ from the liver, red ‘pancreatic juices’ from the pancreas and yellow ‘stomach acid’ from the stomach! Everything that Mrs Devlin showed us was funny, exciting and disgusting at the same time. We just couldn’t believe it when we were left with the end waste product…poo! Mrs Devlin was left with red hands from all the food colouring!

First we broke up the food with a set of HUGE teeth and passed it down the oesophagus, squeezing it to show how the muscles work.

Then we rotated the ‘stomach’ to show the churning motion…

P1020151 P1020152 P1020153 P1020154

We then used the leg of a pair of tights to represent the intestines. The stomach, once full emptied the partly digested food into the small intestine so that the goodness (nutrients) can be released.

P1020155 P1020156 P1020157 P1020158 P1020159 P1020160

This is the nutrients (carbohydrates, fats and proteins) being released through the walls of the small intestine into our bloodstream.

P1020161 P1020162

The undigested food then passes into the large intestine, where water is reabsorbed into the body. The waste product that is left then leaves the large intestine as…
