‘Fit to play, fit to learn’

The pupils and teachers continue to embed and promote a positive attitude to their health and wellbeing by taking part in the popular Daily Mile. This activity is an enjoyable way of making sure that as a whole school we are committed to participating fully in the 2 hours a week of Physical Education required by the Curriculum for Excellence.

Pupils from P1-7 down tools usually just before lunch, and head out to the pitch together for of 15 minutes of head-clearing, fresh-air-breathing exercise. Pupils are encouraged to take part at their own speed; walking, jogging or running. Even the teachers try to run round some days!

To keep us all focused on our Daily Mile, the pupils and teachers have come up with a chart, this can be seen in the Primary foyer, it maps our overall distance covered. If we participate in the Daily Mile most days until the summer holidays, we will have walked all the way to Carlisle! What an achievement!

The impact (so far!)

•it is inclusive of all children

• improved focus in class

• the children thrive on being outdoors – experiencing the fresh air, the weather, the sights and the sounds

• children and adults are becoming increasingly fitter and are able to get the most out of their PE sessions.

• building positive relationships – the children are very positive about it and proud of it. We are able to chat to each other as we make our way round the pitch.

• covers a wide range of PE and Health and Wellbeing curricular outcomes, in a relatively short amount of time.

The Scottish Government is also supportive of this national initiative. A spokesperson said: “Learning in PE is enhanced by initiatives like the daily mile, which can encourage and support parents in fostering healthy habits with their children from a young age.

“We are pleased to see so many Scottish schools are taking part or planning to do so.”

As always if you have any questions or comments please get in touch with your child’s teacher via the School Office. We would love to hear from you, perhaps you could join in with us too?
