P6 K’Nex Cluster Challenge

On the 2nd April the P6 K’Nex Cluster Challenge was held at Dalry School. The task this year was to design and make a vehicle and / or trailer which will allow the athletes to transport their equipment to  Glasgow safely and securely. The vehicle had to transport a bottle of water to represent the sports equipment. The pupils were also given a list of other rules to follow. Mr Harvie and Mrs Stewart from Dalry School were the guest judges.

The top designers were –

1st Euan & William (Dalry)
2nd Finlay & Hardie (Kells)
3rd = Caitlin & Rachel (Carsphairn)
= Daniel & Liam (Dalry)

Well done to all the P6 pupils involved!

Philippines Fundraiser

Three enterprising young pupils from Kells have been raising money for the Philippines Typhoon Appeal. Bronnen, Jasmin and Rory worked together and without any adult support to raise the astonishing sum of £229.85. They placed collection jars in local shops and also recently completed a sponsored bike ride. The children would like to say a big thank you to everyone from the Glenkens who sponsored them.

Children in Need 2013

The Pupil Council decided to hold a ‘Wear What You Want Day’ to raise money for this very worthy charity. Pupils were dressed casually, in ‘onesies’ and also some in fancy dress. Evie, Amy, Laura, Florrie, Georgiana and Jasmin were very enterprising and baked cakes to sell to pupils at break time, as well as organising a luck dip. They raised £42.43. Well done girls!

In total the school raised £78.43 for Children in Need this year. Thank you to everyone who helped support this event.

Macmillan Coffee Morning Final Total

£1,235.33 was the final total raised for the Macmillan charity this year. Since 1993 Kells Primary has raised £10,671.80 for this very worthy cause.

Angela McCormack, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan, visited the school to receive the cheque from the primary 7 pupils and to thank them personally for all their hard work.

Well done to all the pupils involved in raising this tremendous amount of money. Thanks again to all of the parents and friends of the school who supported the pupils in this event.

Harvest Assembly

Our Harvest Assembly was held on Friday 11th October in the school hall. The pupils brought in lots of food for our Harvest Table as you can see from the photographs below. Our School Chaplain, Dr Bartholomew,  told the pupils the Bible story about the loaves and fishes. P1-4 recited a poem about Harvest time and the whole school sang ‘Autumn Days’ and ‘I Have Seen the Golden Sunshine.’ After break time pupils from P5-7 delivered 26 harvest parcels to the elderly in New Galloway.

Macmillan Coffee Morning

On Thursday 3rd October the pupils of Primary 6 and 7 organised and hosted a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Care. Posters were created, invites distributed and money boxes were also made and taken home or given to local businesses. This has resulted in over £1000 being raised for this very worthwhile charity. Thank you to all the parents and friends of the school who supported the coffee morning.

Here are some photographs of the event at the Cross Keys Hotel in New Galloway.

All set up and raring to go

Anti Bullying Poems

P5-7 wrote anti-bullying poems and entered them in a national competition organised by the charity ‘ Respect Me.’

Here are some of the poems submitted –

‘I Wanted to Tell…’ by Florrie

I am bullied.

Every single day.

They pinch and pull me,

In every single way.

One made my leg bleed.

Another broke my heart.

They stole my diary,

And ripped it into tiny parts.

I went to bed,

And cried all night.

I felt like I,

Couldn’t take a fight.

I wanted to tell.

But I was just too sad.

I couldn’t even tell,

Mum or Dad.

I felt, if I told,

I would get into trouble.

It was as if I floated in a lonely bubble.

‘Bullies are Nasty!’ by Stewart

Bullies are the worst people who ever lived!

Bullies can crush your heart, make you sad,

or they can make you bleed right down your leg.

They can make pain in your body and you can’t get any sleep at all.

Be brave and stand up for yourself.

Her’s some advice in case you get bullied again.

Tell an adult!

Also you can tell mum and dad, so you can be safe.

So I just told you what to do, but you could say you could be bullied again.

And I would say again

Tell an adult!

So be safe and keep calm

And,

Tell an adult!

‘Go Tell An Adult’ by AJ

Bulling is nasty

Ugly gestures

Low life

Lasting bad memories

Yobs are bad

Ignorant and rude

Nervous, distressing, harrowing

Go tell an adult

Active Games 2013

The netball team from Kells Primary represented the Glenkens Cluster at the Active Games on the 7th September in Dumfries. The girls took part in the opening ceremony at the David Keswick Centre then were taken to DG One for the netball tournament. The girls were very unlucky not to qualify from the group stages. They were tied with Stranraer on points, but were eliminated on goal difference. Great effort girls! You were a credit to the school.
