Sheep

The P567 class are working on a topic called Where My Wellies Take Me. This involves studying the environment around us and learning to notice and interact with our surroundings.  So far we have looked at lots of wildlife, studied some poems and done lots of active outdoor maths.  It has been a hoot!

One of the poems we looked at whilst sitting under a tree and focusing on imagery was Willliam Blake’s The Lamb. As a result we were very kindly offered the chance to meet some of Mrs Brydson’s rare breed cross lambs.  They were very friendly and tame which meant we could really look at something that we will often see over the dike in a field.  Amy got to know one so well she even had an impromptu hair cut!  Seriously though, it was an interesting opportunity and the P123 class got to have fun with us too – the Land Rover was also a big hit with the children.  Thanks Mrs Brydson.

Zoo Lab @ Kells

Much fun, and a few nervous giggles, were had when Zoo lab visited last week. The children happily handled giant cockroaches, a strange shaped frog, a turtle from Russia and an American ball snake. A tarantula spider and her baby were also on show, but the children just got to look.

Farm/Deer Range Visit

In March P1-3 visited a local dairy farm as part of their topic. The visit to Littleton farm at gatehouse was organised by RHET. The children had a marvellous time learning about feeding cows, looking after calves, the milking parlour and even got to talk with some vets who arrived to see to a sick cow. The farmer, Robert, guided the children around the farm, talking about the different sheds, how the parlour worked and showed the children his wind turbine. The class had lunch at the Wild Goat Park, where they fed some goats carrots. After lunch the class went to the Deer Range. Hugh brought 4 hinds for the class to feed an talked about how the animals are looked after. The children then got to look at different antlers. Many thank to RHET an Forestry Commission Scotland.

Outdoor Learning

P1-3 have again been outdoors in all weather to tend to the Kells vegetable garden. A whole session was spent weeding the plots, and this week Jackie Povall came in to help the children plant potatoes, carrots and strawberries. The children will be responsible for watering and weeding the plots for the next few months, before harvesting the produce. The children will then create healthy menus using the food harvested and cook a healthy lunch. Many thanks to Jackie for giving up her time to support the school.

Galloway Music Festival

Kells children excelled themselves this year at the Galloway Music festival. Well done to the P5-7 class who won the Junior Choir trophy. They sang with passion and enthusiasm. Also competing this year from Kells were 2 recorder groups, 4 solo recorders and a duet recorder group. The adjudicator was very impressed with the recorder playing, noticing that 2 thirds of our school were  competing. All the children represented Kells wonderfully, with comments from the organisers about the brilliant behaviour from our children.
