P5-7 visited Burns’ House and his Mausoleum in St Michael’s Cemetery on the 4th February to round off a mini topic on our national bard. The pupils completed an activity trail on the four rooms in his house as well as exploring the exhibits.

Kells Annual Burns Supper
The pupils of Kells Primary School paid tribute to Scotland’s national bard when they held their annual Burns Supper recently.
The evening was hosted by primary seven pupils.
Guests, pupils, staff, parents and families were treated to speeches and entertainment provided by P5, P6 and P7 pupils.
Florrie delivered the welcome address and introduced the guests and speakers. She then recited the Selkirk Grace.
AJ carried in the haggis to the skirl o’ the pipes played by Glen Cunningham. This was followed by the Georgiana, Amy, Finlay and Hardie reciting the Address To A Haggis after which the P5 and P6 pupils helped serve haggis, neeps and tatties to the guests.
After the supper, Amy and Laura delivered the Immortal Memory.
The Toast to the Lassies was presented by Finlay and Hardie. Evie and Georgiana made the reply on behalf of the lassies.
After the traditional speeches, P5-7 pupils recited Scots verse and sang the Dark Island, Brochan Lom and the Island Spinning Song.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
Staffing Update
Mrs Gillian Bromilow has taken over from Miss Katie Scott, who has now started her new post at Gelston Primary, and will cover P5-7 on a Thursday and Friday each week. Mrs Deshayes will continue to teach the class on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Mr David Steward, Head Janitor from Dalry School, will be covering most of Mrs Daly’s duties until she returns later in the term.
Free Meals for P1-3
Please note that with effect from 5th January, all pupils in P1-3 are entitled to a free school meal.
P7 / S1 Transition
P7 pupils will continue to visit Dalry School every Thursday morning, starting on the 8th January. This term the pupils will be doing French, PE, Music, Technical and Science. Transport arrangements will as before.
P1-4 Football Coaching
Mrak Turner, our Active Schools Co-ordinator and SFA Coach, will be taking the P1-4 class for football on five Tuesdays during the school day this term. The coaching will start on 13th January and finish on 10th February.
Infant Enrolment
Any parents who wish to enrol their children can do so on either Tuesday or Wednesday, 13th and 14th January, between the hours of 9.00am and 3.30pm.
P5-7 Feis Rois Workshops
The music tutors will return for a series of workshops on song writing. The workshops will run for seven weeks, starting on Wednesday 7th January.
Child Line Workshop for P6/7 Pupils
ChildLine are visiting all primary schools in Dumfries and Galloway to talk to P6 & 7 pupils about keeping themselves safe. A representative from ChildLine will be talking to the pupils on the afternoon of Thursday 8th January.
Whist
Our monthly Whist Drive takes place on the evening of Thursday 8th January. This provides a regular income for the school and we are grateful to those of you who help out with catering and raffle prizes.
Annual Kells Burns Supper
This will be taking place on the evening of Friday 30th January, 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. More details to follow next week by pupil post.
P1& 7 Dental Checks
This will take place in the afternoon of Thursday 29th January. You are reminded that if you do not wish your child to be seen, you should notify the school office in writing before then.
Badminton Club
The badminton club was a great success last term with there being a regular 17 pupils out of a possible 25 taking part. This P4-7 club will continue to run from 3 – 4.15pm on Monday 5th, 12th, 19th and will finish on the 26th January.
Basketball and Netball Club
A basketball after school club will once again run from 23rd February – 30th March for the pupils not involved in Mrs Maxwell’s netball sessions. There will be more information to follow later in the term on both netball and basketball.
Replacement Water Bottles and Caps
Replacement water bottles and caps can be purchased at the school office. The prices are £1 for a new bottle and only 20p for a new cap.
Rag Bag Collection
Our Rag Bag collections continue to raise money for school funds. Last term we banked another £58 as we had collected 145kg. The total money banked so far this session from the Rag Bag Bin is £146. Please remember the Rag Bag Bin is available at all times for any unwanted textiles. Thank you.

The PTA are keen for the parent body to be kept up-to-date with decisions made at their meetings. please could you pass on your email address to Mrs Best if you would like an electronic copy of the minutes. Christmas Concert 2014
The Christmas Concert was held on the afternoon and evening of Tuesday 16th December. P1-4 opened the concert with the recorder group playing ‘Ode to Joy’ then the whole class sang ‘Christmas Dinner’ and ‘Jingle Bells.’ P5-7 then performed ‘Children of the World’ to parents and friends of the school. The musical explored Christmas traditions in specific countries around the world. P5-7 worked really hard this term to learn new songs, lines, stage directions and also numerous costume changes. Well done to both classes on their super performances!
Kells Musical Cafe 2014
The PTA held their annual Musical Café to raise money for school funds. Both classes performed musical items to entertain their parents, relatives and friends of the school. £430 has been raised this month. Well done to all involved!

Christmas Lunch 2014
Wilma, our new cook, prepared a super Christmas Lunch for pupils and staff on Wednesday 10th December. We had melon for starters, turkey and the trimmings for the main course and trifle or chocolate fudge cake for dessert. Our P7 pupils helped serve the meal to the rest of the pupils and staff.
P5 Glenkens Carlingwark Residential
Recently the P5 pupils from Dalry and Kells went to Carlingwark on a two day residential. The pupils went hillwalking up Bengairn on day one. The second day was spent orienteering and mountain biking. We were very lucky with the weather and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
Macmillan Final Total!
Primary 7 pupils raised a magnificent £1,191.96 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Angela McCormack from Macmillan visited the school recently to receive the cheque.
The pupils would like to thank parents, friends, local businesses and the local community for their support.

Halloween Fun
Harvest Thanksgiving Assembly
On Friday 10th October we held our Harvest Assembly. The pupils brought in items for the Harvest table and they also performed some musical items for the parents and grandparents. After the assembly the P5-7 pupils delivered 25 Harvest parcels to the elderly in New Galloway.
