April Newsletter

April

I hope you all had a super Easter Holiday and made the most of the reasonably good weather we had. As you will see below in ‘Dates for Diary’ this is a very busy term with lots of events and experiences planned for the children. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information on any of the newsletter items.

Class Photographs

Angus Leigh will be in school to take class photographs on Friday 27th April.

School Uniform

If you wish to order any items of school uniform, please complete the attached form and return it to the school office by Friday, 4th May.

 Walk to School Week 21st – 25th May

Kells Primary will once again be participating in this initiative. When possible, could you please encourage your child to walk to school on this week. We appreciate that a number of our pupils live outwith New Galloway, but even walking part of the way to school still counts towards the school’s statistics. Thanks.

Dinner Money

It would be very helpful if all dinner money could be paid on a Monday morning, please.

Milk Money

Milk Money for this term is £8.16.  Please pay to the school office as soon as possible.

Rag Bag Collection

Please remember the Rag Bag Bin is available at all times for any unwanted textiles.  Our next collection will be on 4th June.  This is an easy way for us to raise money. Last term the school received a cheque for £133.  Thank you.

Marie Curie Mini Pots of Care

Many thanks to those families who supported our daffodil mini pots of care appeal.  We have donated £116.00 to Marie Curie to help those living with cancer. Well done to the pupils in P1-3!

Eco Group

The Eco Group are still collecting plastic bottle tops so that they can create a mosaic in the playground where the old greenhouse used to stand. There are collection bins in the school for the bottle tops. Please help us if you can.

 

Workers of the Month for March 2012

P1-3 Freya – ‘Freya wrote an excellent story in class with a beginning, a middle and an end. She worked independently and included some fantastic and interesting words.’

P4/5 Yelena – ‘Consistent in her good work in maths and producing an interesting and colourful factfile on the Rainforest.’

P6/7 Kyle – ‘For hard work in class, keeping up-to-date with all his activities and producing a super personal project.’

Scots Concert at the Cross Keys Hotel

On Monday 20th February P4-7 put on a short concert for parents and members of the local community. The pupils recited a variety of Scots poetry, P4/5 played a number of well known tunes on their ukuleles, some pupils sang songs plus the whole choir performed ‘Get on Board’ and ‘Any Dream Will Do.’ A big thank you to Miss O’Hare for the kind invitation to perform at the Cross Keys. Hopefully this will become an annual event.

Terramundi Theatre Company

Terramundi Theatre Company visited the school and performed Tam O’Shanter using shadow puppets. Primary 6/7 then were given the opportunity to make their own puppets in a workshop then perform their short plays to the rest of the school. 

                                                                                                         

Dr Finlayson’s Challenge 2012

Pupils from P4 to 7 participated in this year’s Dr Finlayson’s Challenge. The pupils were organised into mixed groups of 3 or 4 and were given the task of producing an eco friendly board game which followed a list of set criteria. The winners were Freddie, Hannah, Tea and Jasmin. Their entry goes forward to the regional competition. Well done and good luck!

Annual Burns Supper

P7 pupils at Kells Primary hosted the annual Burns Supper in the school hall recently.

Invited guests, pupils, school staff, parents and family members enjoyed the speeches and entertainment that was provided by the P6 and P7 pupils.

The P7 pupils delivered the welcome address and introduced each invited guest and speaker. The Selkirk Grace was then recited by the pupils. Kelsie carried in the haggis to the skirl o’ the pipes played by Mr John Hilsley. Murphy and Jack  recited the Address tae a Haggis. The primary 6 pupils helped serve the traditional meal of haggis, neeps and tatties.

The entertainment continued with Primary 6 and 7 pupils singing ‘The Island Spinning Song.’

The Immortal Memory was presented by Daisy and Emma .

Hannah, Amberleigh, Raph, Kelsie and Erin from P6 then recited If Burns Can See Us Noo.

The Toast tae the Lassies was presented by Murphy and Jack.

Freddie, Arthur, Kyle and Oliver from P6 then recited Willie Wastle.

The Lassies Reply was made by Emily and Tea.

Some of the Pupils from P6 and P7 then combined to sing The Dark Island.

A very enjoyable evening was concluded with everyone singing Auld Lang Syne.
