Learning About Winter

As we arrived back on the first day of term, about to learn about the signs of winter, the weather was kind enough to provide hard, frozen ground and lumps of ice in the Nursery garden. Those playing outdoors were very excited with their frozen finds which prompted great discussion about what would happen if we brought the ice indoors. There was no need to wait today for our ice cubes to form in the freezer for our indoor tray, as these super scientists brought their lumps of ice indoors to see if their predictions were true. Thank you Mr. Jack Frost for providing us with a great learning opportunity and to these boys and girls for super teamwork.

Foam Fun

Towards the end of term the children enjoyed experimenting with foam on a small table. Some took the opportunity to draw in the foam or write their names while others loved the sensory experience and were able to talk about how the foam felt and smelled which encouraged literacy skills as the children thought about their choice of words. Above all, they had great fun as we hope you can see from these photos.

Little Visitors

Mrs. Mahon, the Primary 2 teacher, enjoyed seeing the photos of the children who visited her classroom to make ice homes:

“Lovely seeing P2 working so nicely with our little visitors! Come back again soon!”

Thank you for inviting us and thank you to the Primary 2 children for looking after our little Nursery group – great teamwork everyone.

Ice Homes With Primary 2

When Primary 2 wanted to put ice cube trays in our freezer recently, some of the Nursery children were curious about what they were going to do with them. A group of children was therefore invited to join Primary 2 when they collected the ice cubes for their activity. Our children worked well together with the older children when they talked about freezing and melting as they tried to make homes out of ice.

The children showed that they developed their learning from this visit to Primary 2 as you can see from some of the comments below.

Owen: we needed to build ice homes. You needed to stack them all.
Brogan: we had to get the ice out. It was very cold. It’s made of water.
Noah: we were making homes. They melted and made water.
Ethan: we went to the school. We made ice for them. We were having a feel of it. It felt freezing cold.

Thank you very much Mrs. Mahon and Primary 2 for inviting us to your class. We had lots of fun and were able to tell the other boys and girls what we had learned.

Activity Bags Library

story-sackWe would like to remind you that tomorrow, Tuesday 22nd November, is the first day for our activity bags “library”. The bags will be given out from the Family Learning room opposite the school hall.
If your child attends morning sessions you can collect a bag at the end of the session from Eileen, our Family Learning Co-ordinator. The bag should then be returned the following Tuesday at the start of the morning session. Please leave the returned bag on your child’s peg and Eileen will collect it from there.
If your child attends Nursery in the afternoon you can collect a bag when you bring your child at the start of the session. You should bring your bag to the Family Learning room when you collect a new one.
If you would like an activity bag but can’t collect on a Tuesday please let Eileen know and she will try to make alternative arrangements.

Learning in the Snack Area

An important aspect of learning in Nursery happens in the snack area where children develop a wide range of skills. They develop self-help and social skills as well as fine motor control when helping to prepare their own snack. Literacy and Numeracy are also part of the experience through talking and listening or, for example, counting the number of pieces of fruit on their plates.
Healthy eating and lifestyle often forms part of our discussions and this week we took the opportunity to develop the children’s global awareness to encourage them to think about the origins of food as we talked about which country the different foods came from and how they arrived on our table. We had carrots, sweetcorn, cucumber and three different colours of peppers for the children to sample along with dip and breadsticks. Some were more confident than others to try a new taste but they all showed great enthusiasm to find out which part of the globe they had come from.
We will be encouraging the children to continue to think about the origins of different foods and to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge in the snack area. We hope that you enjoy these photos of some of our little food tasters.
