Doctors and Dentists

We would like to share more of the children’s ideas about what people do as part of their work. Our photos of the doctor’s surgery led to discussions about doctors and dentists.

Isla: you go to the dentist to sort your teeth.
Joey: they take your teeth out if they’re sore.
Amy-Leigh: the dentist might take a tooth out when you’re asleep.
Zachary: the dentist counts your teeth.
Ava V.: the dentist makes sure you clean your teeth.
Bethany: a dentist looks after teeth.
Mikey: the doctor says, “Don’t go to school tomorrow”.
Freya: the doctor makes you feel better.
Ben: we have a hospital and doctor’s in Annan. When you’re old they put something in your mouth and you get better.

I wonder if any of the boys or girls in Nursery will be doctors or dentists one day?

What Happens In The Police Station?

Part of our learning about our community is to develop an understanding of which jobs people can do and where they work. We have been looking at photos of a range of buildings in Annan and discussing what happens in them. The children are beginning to think about their community and we are having some interesting discussions about it.
Here are a few of their ideas about the police station.

Savannah: the police take away the bad people.
Mary: if we lose things we go to the police.
Rebecca: my Mummy lost her purse so we went to the police station.
Max: you ask a policeman if you get lost.
Mikey: the police have a car that goes vroom.
Dan: the police arrest people that’s bad.
Ben: police put the bad men in jail.
Archie: policemen work in the police station.

We think that P.C. Leggett will be impressed by the children’s knowledge when we visit the police station. He is looking forward to our visit when we can learn more about his job.

Our Community

As we begin to learn about our community and the jobs that people do there, the children are showing an interest in painting some of the vehicles that are used as part of people’s work. As you can see, fire engines and ambulances are the current favourites.
We would be delighted if parents/carers were able to come in to chat to the children about their jobs. It makes no difference what your job is, the children love to have visitors and it helps them to understand the world of work that they will become part of in the future. Please speak to staff if you are able to help us in this way.

Chinese Restaurant

Over the next week or two we will be learning about Chinese New Year. We have begun to talk about what we already know and lots of the children’s comments seemed to centre round food as many have visited local Chinese restaurants. We now have a Chinese restaurant in our role play area in each room and on Friday we tasted some Chinese food. As you can see, some made a good attempt to try using chopsticks while others preferred forks and spoons but most children were confident to try some of the food on offer.

Can We Have Some Thistles Please?

To inspire us in our art and craft area we decided that we wanted to buy some thistles as we had been talking about them as the flower of Scotland. A small group went along to the local flower shop and showed great confidence to ask for the thistles and then pay for them. Lots of children are now creating some lovely thistle paintings so thank you to the children who were such good shoppers.

Kailey’s Family’s Got Talent

Our Scottish celebrations continued this week with a fantastic performance by Kailey’s family. Her Dad kindly brought in his bagpipes to entertain us and both Kailey and her brother showed super skills as they performed several Highland dances to his music. Everyone clapped along and thoroughly enjoyed their wonderful performance. Thank you so much to Kailey, her Dad and her brother Conlay. We really appreciate you performing for us and think that you are a very talented family.

Burns Celebration

We would like to remind everyone that we will be holding a small Burns celebration in Nursery tomorrow, 24th January. It would add to the occasion if the children could wear a little ‘touch o’ tartan’ if possible. Hopefully most of them have or can borrow a hairband, a ribbon or a scarf for the day and anyone who has a kilt or a tartan outfit would certainly help us to celebrate the day in style but the main thing is simply to come and enjoy the day.
The children have done well this week learning their Scottish songs and are looking forward to performing them tomorrow to their families at the end of the Nursery sessions (11.20 and 2.50).

How Do We Know It’s Winter?

Our learning at the start of this term is focussed on the signs of winter and how it affects our lives. As a starting point we have been talking about how we know it’s winter. This has also encouraged the children to think about the recent flooding that has featured on the news and which some have experienced in Annan. We would like to share some of the children’s ideas about winter.

Carmen: it’s winter ’cause it’s colder and the grass turns in to snow. The trees have lost their leaves because the snow’s too strong to make them stay on.
Roxy: it’s winter because we’re learning about it. It’s cold and sometimes it’s snowing and we get Jack Frost.
 Deryn: the pond gets frozen and you can skate on it.
Tom: it’s cold and we need hats and gloves.
Reagyn: Jack Frost makes ice. He normally comes to life and if water’s there he makes it alive.
Lexi: you get nice and warm in a jacket ’cause it’s winter.
Rebecca: you need gloves and a scarf when it’s winter.
Fearne: you need coats ’cause it’s cold.
Jade: I like winter ’cause it’s snow. The snow falls all down.
Jessica W: you get wind and rain too in winter.
Logan: there was a big flood at the harbour and a ball went swimming in it.
Conan: you need to rescue people when it’s all flooding.
William: a flood is very high water that goes up in the clouds after a while.

Pirates of the Rainbow Room

A group of pirates has been very busy in the Rainbow Room this week. An initial interest in drawing treasure maps resulted in us hunting out some pirate outfits and having our own treasure hunt in the Nursery garden. The children had great fun as they tried to follow the map and were very excited when they found the treasure chest which, of course, was marked with an “X”. They then decided for themselves to work in teams to hide the treasure chest and see if the other team of pirates could find it. Treasure maps also started to appear on the Promethean board as well as paper and there was lots of discussion about what kind of treasure we might find.
The Nursery pirates made a visit to Primary 3 to see what they had been learning about pirates. Mrs. Mahon was delighted to get some special visitors and sent them back with some pirate goodies – you can see the number game in one of our photos. She asked if the children could make some treasure for Primary 3’s treasure chest so they set to their task in the craft area and today they duly delivered their treasure to Primary 3.
Well done you pirates of the Rainbow Room – you have certainly shown yourselves to be successful learners and effective contributors with all your fantastic ideas.

Leaf Hunt

As we have been learning about Autumn we decided to go out and about in the school grounds to look for some Autumn leaves. The Rainbow Room went on a leaf search to the outdoor learning area and the Sunshine Room decided to go to the school field as they could see so many leaves from their window. As you can see, everyone was very enthusiastic to collect as many leaves as they could and we are now going to use them in the art and craft area.
