Teamwork Makes A Good Fire

amfireThe afternoon children had such fun with their camp fire that we offered the morning children the opportunity to make one too. They worked so well together searching the Nursery garden for broken wood, twigs and leaves to add to the pile ready for burning and they too enjoyed gathering round their fire for a chat. We listened carefully for the crackling noises and watched while the wind blew the smoke and helped the fire to burn. Well done boys and girls for being very sensible around the fire.

Camp Fire Chat

outCamp fires are a great place for a chat and some of the afternoon children asked today if they could have a fire outdoors like we had earlier in the month when we were learning about staying safe on Bonfire Night. We hunted out everything we needed and quickly had our fire on the go. Some of the children noticed a pile of broken pieces of wood we had been storing to one side and suggested that we add them to our fire which made for a great little blaze. out2It was lovely to hear the children chatting as they sat by the fire and there was lots of valuable conversation about why we needed to keep our distance as well as great discussion about the wonderful smell and sounds created by our fire.

Callum’s Sunflower

Callum paid a visit to Nursery today from Primary 1 to show us photos of the sunflower he had grown from the seed he planted in Nursery last term. As you can see, he has looked after his sunflower very well and has shown great gardening skills to grow his plant to an enormous seven feet two inches which we reckon converts to 2.18 metres.
Well done Callum for showing super growing skills and thank you very much for bringing your photos to show us. I wonder if anyone else has photos of their sunflowers grown from the seed planted in Nursery?

From a Small Seed …

sunflower

Last term the children planted sunflower seeds and took them home as seedlings, having learned how to care for them to make them grow. Mollie’s Mum has sent us this photo of the sunflower that she looked after and said,

“From a small seed……..

Shame I didn’t get Mollie in photo too!”

That is indeed a huge sunflower to have grown from a small seed Mollie. Well done for looking after it so well and thank you for sending us a photo.

Flower Planting

Mollie’s Mum enjoyed the photos of the children planting flowers:

“What a lovely idea to plant flowers! Mollie loves growing things, we are growing our own veg at our allotment! Thank you Mrs Alexander for the flower pots. The flowers look great!”

Mollie certainly seemed to know how to plant flowers and the children were pleased with the results of their work. They are keen to look after them too so hopefully they should look lovely all summer.

Pretty Flowers All In A Row

As well as planting sunflowers to take home, we have been planting in the Nursery garden to brighten it up. Mrs. Alexander kindly gave us four flower pots which inspired us to add to the display in our raised bed. The afternoon children were enthusiastic to join in and help and, as you can see, they made a good job of preparing the soil then choosing which plants they wanted where. Have a look in the garden to see what you think of their hard work.

Tiny Caterpillars

Tiny caterpillars arrived in Nursery recently and we have all been watching their growth with great excitement. When we returned to Nursery last Monday, the caterpillars in both the Rainbow and Sunshine Rooms had formed their cocoons so we carefully transferred them to their nets and now await the arrival of our butterflies. I wonder which butterflies will emerge first? If you ask the children, they will be able to show you the cocoons in Nursery and tell you all about what has happened.

Sunflower Planting

To tie in with our learning about Vincent Van Gogh, the children have been planting sunflowers as well as painting them. As you can see, they knew to look for instructions and had good ideas about how to make the seeds grow. Once they have their little sunflower pots home, the children should be able to tell their families what they need to do to look after their plants. Hopefully, they will be able to bring their sunflowers or a photo back to Nursery later in the term to show us how well they are growing.

Snow Scenes

Although the winter weather caused Nursery to be closed one day last week, there was still plenty of snow in the garden to have fun with when we returned. Despite our best efforts, it was tricky to make a snowman but the children soon produced alternative ways to use this exciting resource. Snow angels and snow castles, made using buckets, were very popular as was rolling tyres and barrels through the snow to investigate what tracks they made. We made snow pies instead of mud pies and there were some super discussions about where the best snow was, how long it would stay and what would happen to it.
