Learning With A Plastic Bag

Mrs. Moyes, Dumfries and Galloway RAiSE teacher, has been enjoying our windy day photos.

“Love hearing about all the fantastic STEM activities you’re doing. Love the idea of a plastic bag to investigate wind – just shows you don’t need lots of fancy equipment to explore the world around us.
Keep it up!

Thank you for visiting our blog. It is true – it’s surprising  how much we can learn from using a plastic bag.

One Windy Day

What can we do on a windy day? Let’s have a look at some of the activities our children got involved in one recent windy day in our garden.
Some flags and a few plastic bags helped the children learn about the impact of the wind and how a change of direction can affect how their make-do kites work. Snack also seems like a whole lot more fun if you enjoy it outdoors regardless of weather and the discovery of two new big wooden boxes provided great opportunities for imaginative play. They started out as pirate ships then the children decided to use the guttering to build ramps for their cars and balls to be rolled in and out of the boxes so lots of teamwork, discussion and problem solving happened led by the children’s own ideas in play. Windy days can be great fun!

Bug Hotel

Our bug hotel is now becoming established in the outdoor area and the turf roof that we have had added is encouraging our little visitors to call in for a stay. The children enjoy investigating which minibeasts are there and we have regularly seen worms, woodlice and slugs which are a source of great interest. These photos show the children having a closer look and the photos of their findings have been taken by the children themselves. What super little scientists they are.

Clever Gardener

After planting beans with Eileen, our Family Learning Co-ordinator, last term the children involved took home their beans to look after them. They talked about what they would have to do to help them grow and one clever little gardener brought in the results of his hard work to show us this week. Very well done! We think that you have done a fantastic job looking after your beans. Thank you for bringing it in to show us.

Outdoor Learning

One of Dumfries and Galloway’s RAiSE (Raising Aspirations in STEM Education) team has been looking at some of the recent photos of our outdoor activities.

“Love this outdoor learning. Laying a fantastic foundation for STEM learning.

Thank you for visiting our blog Mrs. Moyes and for your kind comment.

Incy Wincy Spider

Our younger children from the Sunshine Room love outdoor play and have grown so much in confidence when socialising with some of the older children. Each day brings a new adventure and this week brought an exciting find when they saw a big spider in the garden. We wondered if it may have been sleeping in our bug hotel but it certainly provided a great interest and point of discussion. We just love seeing the wonder on the faces of these young children when they find something new.

STEM skills

One of Dumfries and Galloway’s RAiSE (Raising Aspirations in STEM Education) team has been looking at the photos of our bug hotel.

Excellent STEM skills at work! Hope you have lots of ‘little visitors’ booking into your hotel soon to provide you with lots of environmental science learning.
Great job!”

Thank you for your kind comment. We are indeed hoping that our hotel has been busy over the summer.

Holiday Fun

It was lovely to hear from one of our families in the holidays. They have been looking at our photos of the children making bug hotels.

“The kids look like they have had loads of fun making mini beast homes. Letti, Oscar and Harli made ‘bug boxes’ last week with Dad for our back garden.”

This sounds like great fun to do at home. I wonder how many minibeasts will come to live in your boxes? We are looking forward to seeing what has happened to our bug hotel when we return to Nursery.

Budding Horticulturalists

One of Dumfries and Galloway’s RAiSE (Raising Aspirations in STEM Education) team has been looking at the photos of the two year old children from the Sunshine Room growing cress.

Great to see science learning that is not only fascinating but tasty too! Looks like you have some budding horticulturists there.
