Families Learning Together

We are delighted to say that our Family Learning event last week was very well attended. “Healthy Snacks and Happy Faces” seemed to be a great success for everyone who took part and it was lovely to see families able to enjoy some fun learning together, particularly when children were from different classes.

Families from Nursery, Primary 1 and Primary 2/1 all attended our session, enjoying delicious healthy snacks of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries on oatcakes and soft cheese. There was friendly advice available and a selection of helpful leaflets as well as the opportunity to make a happy face using food pictures.

We hope everyone enjoyed this aspect of our “Healthy and Happy Week” and are very grateful to Eileen Johnstone, our Family Learning Co-ordinator, for, yet again, organising an event which made everyone feel welcome.

Healthy Snacks and Happy Faces

We would like to remind you that tomorrow (26.4.12) is our “Healthy Snacks and Happy Faces” event organised by Eileen Johnstone, Family Learning Co-ordinator. Those who have expressed an interest will be able to join their child to try some delicious snacks, pick up some recipe/information leaflets and help him/her to make a happy face picture.

Some P1 and P2 children and their parents will be joining us so we are looking forward to a fun time as part of our Early Years “Healthy and Happy Week”.

Happy Easter

What a fantastic display of decorated eggs we had in Nursery last week thanks to all your efforts at home. We were delighted that nearly every child had spent time with their families decorating eggs and we all enjoyed talking about the different ideas on display. Mrs. Kelly was so impressed that she brought Primary 4/3 to Nursery to see our display. We gave them a few ideas for decorating their own eggs and they were certainly full of compliments for our efforts.

Click on the photos below to see some of the children’s super eggs. We hope that you are all enjoying your holidays and wish everyone a Happy Easter.

A Touch o’ Tartan

What a wonderful week we have had with the various activities to celebrate our learning about Scotland. As well as learning about the fiddle and Rory’s Dad’s super storytelling, we enjoyed our Burn’s celebration on Tuesday with Primary 1 and Primary 2/1 followed by a great day on Friday when we were part of the whole school celebration.

We appreciate everyone making a super effort to provide the children with ‘a touch o’ tartan’ on both days. It certainly added to the occasion and they all looked wonderful. We hope that you enjoyed hearing the children sing on Friday and that you were able to take the opportunity to have a look at their work on display. It was great to see so many families join in our celebration with a coffee and a taste of the shortbread made by the children. Thank you for everyone’s support and lovely comments.

Here is a taster of our week in photos. You can see a fuller outline and photos of our learning about Scotland in our ‘Thinking Books’ which are in the book area in Nursery.

Fiddle Fun

As part of our learning about Scottish culture, the afternoon children were invited to Primary 2/1’s classroom last week to learn about the fiddle. Mrs. Roberts told us about the different parts of it and how the sound comes out of it. She played us several Scottish tunes and then gave us a big surprise when she played a tune that we know. We all joined in with “Ye Cannae Shove Yer Granny Aff a Bus” then we managed to record it and listen back on to our singing on the computer which was great fun. If you turn up your volume and click on the link below you can hear the children singing along to Mrs. Roberts playing the fiddle.

Mrs. Roberts even helped some children hold the little fiddle and they were able to make some sounds with it. Maybe one day they will be able to play like Mrs. Roberts.

Thank you so much to Mrs. Roberts as well as Miss Cameron and Primary 2/1. We really enjoyed our visit to your classroom. Hopefully the morning children will be able to enjoy this experience with Primary 1 later in the week.

Scottish Celebrations

We would like to remind you that, as part of building an awareness of Scottish language and culture, we will celebrate Burn’s Day on Tuesday 24th January. This will take the form of some fun games and a small “Burn’s Supper”.

It would add to the occasion if the children were able to wear something tartan but please don’t worry if your child does not have anything as this is a fun, informal event. We are looking forward to Primary 1 joining us in the morning and Primary 2/1 in our afternoon celebration.

Next Friday will provide the opportunity for families to come in to hear us sing our Scottish songs and see some of the work that all the Early Years classes have been doing as part of our Scottish celebrations. Details are in Miss Wilson’s recent newsletter. We look forward to a busy and fun week.

Concert Congratulations

Congratulations must go to our children for a fantastic performance at our Christmas concert. They looked and sounded wonderful and all who took part should be proud of their achievement.

We would like to thank all parents who provided the outfits for the children and we would like particularly to thank Conner’s Granny for making us some of the cute little net skirts. We were also delighted that Sara’s Mum was able to help our Polish children learn a Polish Christmas carol to add to the concert: it was wonderful to see some of our Nursery children perform this with older Polish children who attend our school.

We greatly appreciate all the very kind comments made by so many parents about the children’s performance. Like you, we feel very proud of them all. The photos below show some of the children prior to their performance.

Busy Elves

If Santa gets stuck for helpers at this hectic time of year, we feel sure that our children would make very good little elves as they have been working so hard over the last week or two. With two enterprise activities running at the same time, Nursery has been a busy and exciting place.

Thank you to all those families who have ordered calendars to help fundraise for our Christmas party. Some children have shown great patience to make the large numbers ordered and we hope that you will be proud of their end product. Most calendars are now ready to pick up: you will get a note soon reminding you of the cost, if you have not yet paid, and they can be collected whenever you wish.

With the Christmas Fayre on Wednesday 7th December, we have also had lots of children keen to make pot pourri bags for the HFA event: we had quite a little production line going at times. We hope that some Nursery families will be able to attend the fayre to support the hard work carried out by all the children and parents of our school. As you will have seen from the letter home, there will be a wide range of activities to enjoy and we have heard a rumour that Santa might be available for photo opportunities.

“Wear Something Spotty”

Please remember that it’s “Wear Something Spotty” day tomorrow, Friday 18th November. Our suggested donation is 50p to go towards “Children in Need”. Cakes and sweets will also be on sale for 20p so the children can bring a little extra money if they would like to visit the cake stall during our Nursery session.

Singing, smiles and certificates

Singing, smiles and certificates filled our graduation day at Hecklegirth Nursery. The children were so excited to perform for their family and friends and they certainly did us all proud. Happiness seemed to beam from almost every face as they showed what wonderful little stars they are. A slightly nervous practice for some at our school assembly the day previously seemed to build their confidence and both the morning and afternoon children “saved the best for last” to impress their families. The singing and dancing was fantastic! Miss Wilson was also very impressed with the grown-up and confident manner in which each individual child walked onto the stage to shake hands and receive their certificate.
All the staff were touched when we were presented with surprise gifts which were most generous, particularly after the recent secret fundraising event. We would like to thank all the children and their parents for making this  year a most enjoyable one. The children have been an absolute delight and their parents so supportive of us. We could not have asked for more.
