Deferred Year In Nursery

The parents of those children who have birthdays between September and February, and are due to start school in August 2016 have already had a letter explaining the options re a deferred year in Nursery.
An information leaflet and application forms are available in Nursery for those who wish to apply for an additional year. Please ask staff for copies if you are interested in this option. The final application date is January 15th when applications must be in Dumfries.
We hope that you take the opportunity to speak to staff if you are unsure about your child’s readiness to move to Primary 1 next year and we can discuss our views.

Christmas Sales Team

fayreOur chocolate Christmas shapes seemed very popular at the Christmas Fayre today and were sold in no time. Well done to our great sales team who you can see here and to all those children who helped to make the chocolate.
It was great to see lots of Nursery children and their families visiting the Fayre too. We hope that you all enjoyed yourselves.

Christmas Fayre

With the school Christmas Fayre tomorrow (Thursday), we have been making chocolate Christmas shapes to sell on our stall. Discussions about what would happen when we put chocolate in the microwave then the fridge developed the children’s learning about sciences. We also used numeracy skills to count the squares of chocolate as well as reading the dial to set the microwave so there was lots of learning going on as we prepared our chocolate shapes.

We hope that lots of Nursery children and their families will be able to come to the Christmas Fayre tomorrow between 2.00 and 4.00 in school. We can certainly recommend the chocolate shapes to anyone who has a little money to spend.

Carlisle Christmas Help

Eastriggs Primary and Hecklegirth Primary want to do something to help make Christmas special for those affected by the recent floods.

We don’t want them to have to cancel Christmas so we are asking families to donate a gift, wrapped and labelled for a man, woman, boy or girl- something to wear and/or enjoy on what will be a damp festive period. It’s a simple and practical way to help and shows that we are thinking of our neighbours at this time.

Please drop off gifts to the school by Monday 14th and we will take them to Carlisle for distribution to those in need.

Frosty Scenes

The corridors of Hecklegirth are looking very festive now and we have put up a display of some of the children’s recent art work in school. As you can see, there are many ways to make snowmen and winter trees so well done to the children for producing individual pieces of work. You can have a close look next week if you plan to come to the Christmas Fayre – look for the board opposite Mrs. Alexander’s office. Until then, here is a taster of some of the children’s art.

Open Day

This Thursday, December 3rd, we are having an Open Day for the whole school from 9.00 to 6.00 and we would encourage you to take this opportunity to have a chat to staff and a look in your child’s special book if you have not already done so. As we have indicated previously, your contributions are very valuable as these books are a shared document between the child, parents and Nursery staff.
Why not also take this opportunity to have a look around the school beyond the Nursery rooms, particularly if you are considering a move to Primary 1 with us next year? We hope that this is a helpful event, particularly for working parents who may find it difficult to visit Nursery and school during our usual opening hours, and look forward to seeing you on Thursday.

Primary 6 Visitors

Recently there have been some very welcome visitors coming to play with the Nursery children on Tuesdays. Primary 6 has been coming in small groups to play with the younger children to build relationships and act as good role models. I think you can see from the photos that this is working out very well and we are delighted to have such helpful visitors who are acting as responsible citizens and effective contributors.
If you are in Primary 6 please bring back your permission slip, if you have not already done so, so that we can use more photos of you on the blog. Thank you for being great helpers – the Nursery children are enjoying your visits.

Annan Lights Santa Dash

The annual Santa Dash will take place on Sunday 6th December at 1.30pm at the Everholm running track. Any local organisation is invited to take part to raise funds for their own cause. All we need to do is register, raise sponsorship and get as many kids and families to take part from Hecklegirth School. You can walk it, jog it, run it or cycle- distances to suit all abilities so everyone is welcome. Whatever we raise we keep so let’s get together and make a difference!

If any Nursery parents would like to take part please see Mrs Alexander, Mrs Hamilton or any of the Nursery staff who can get you a sponsor sheet. Money raised will be used towards our new Mastery of Maths resources for the primary and numeracy and outdoor learning games for Nursery to help raise attainment for all!
