Buddy Thoughts

Primary 6 pupils from P5/6 and P6/7 have been visiting Nursery for a few months now and good relationships are being built which will help to support those children moving to Primary 1 at Hecklegirth in August. You may have noticed some of the work the P6 buddies completed in class on our transition noticeboard in the cloakroom area. We thought we would share some of their thoughtful comments as they were asked to think about their role in Nursery.

What does a buddy do?
A Nursery buddy helps the little ones to make friends and build up confidence. They also must set a brilliant example.
A Nursery buddy is someone who is kind, helpful and also shows a good example and that encourages them to do good because if they see you do a bad thing they will copy you because you are one of the older ones and they rely on you.
A Nursery buddy’s job is to help the children from Nursery in their transition to P1.
It’s good to help the children to be confident. Also help them to do things they’re not sure about like writing and jigsaws. I think it’s good to read to them because they might learn some new words. I try and ask them questions like, “What did the pig say?” especially when I’m reading to them.
You need to be a good example because if you be silly your buddy will be silly too. When you go to Nursery you can help the children by reading a book to them.
A Nursery buddy helps do puzzles, draw, play to welcome the pupil to the school.
A Nursery buddy is there to build the little one’s confidence and help them with their transition to P1. They are also there to help them speak nicely to each other and play in a team.

What strengths do you need to be a buddy?
You will need to be confident, kind, helpful and gentle so no-one will get hurt.
We need to be gentle with them because they are only wee and fragile.
You need to set a good example not a bad example. Also ask them what they want to do. If they want to do a jigsaw I do a jigsaw with them.
There are certain character strengths you need to be a good buddy likes of being kind and helpful so they don’t cry. You need to be fair so you don’t just leave them and go play with someone else.
To be a buddy you need to be a good example to them. When they want to do something you don’t want, just do it. It will make them happy.
You need to be helpful to show right from wrong. Being patient is helpful too as they might be shy about coming to school. If you are confident they will see that and hopefully copy you to become confident too.
There is lots and lots of strengths you need to be a buddy. You need to be helpful and kind, if you aren’t then they won’t want to come to school and they will be upset. You also need to be gentle with them because they are only little and are fragile.

Why do you enjoy being a Nursery buddy?
I enjoy being a buddy because I get to play with the little ones and it is very fun.
Because I love to go and see them and read to them and write and also draw and stuff like that.
I enjoy being a Nursery buddy because I love playing with little ones and also looking after them.
I enjoy being a buddy because I love helping people especially the little ones. You will enjoy being a buddy because it will give you someone to look after and play with.
I like helping the children draw because it makes me feel good and they might not know what to do.

As you can see the older children have thought carefully about their buddy role and take it seriously. If you would like to read more of their ideas, check out the board in the cloakroom and on the corridor wall. We look forward to more fun times ahead with the buddies next term.

Having Fun in Primary 1

It’s great fun in Primaries 1 and 1/2, as some of the children found out recently when they paid a visit to their classrooms. There was a whole new selection of toys and activities to investigate and experiment with which all the children tried out with great excitement – Easter art, fun number activities on their Promethean board, exciting stories where the children helped to tell the tale … just so many fun and different ways to learn. We hope that you agree that the children look very comfortable and settled in this exciting new environment – definitely the ‘confident individuals’ we want to nurture. Thank you to Mrs. Lindsay and Miss Campbell for making the children feel so welcome. They all thoroughly enjoyed their visits.

Eggs-ellent Eggs!

What a lot of fantastic eggs appeared from our Nursery children for the decorated boiled egg competition! It was great to see that so many children and their families had worked together at home on this fun Easter activity and the Nursery/Primary 1 tables were full of lots of creative ideas. Well done to the Primary 1 winner and to Cormac from Nursery who was the runner-up in our category but a huge thanks and well done to everyone who took the time to enter the competition. We thought that your eggs were amazing!

Decorated Eggs Competition

eggPlease remember that tomorrow (March 22nd) is the day to bring your decorated boiled eggs to school for the competition. Entries should be with us by the end of the day so that they can be displayed in the school foyer. A few early entries are already on display so we look forward to seeing your ideas.

Field Sports

There has been great excitement about the new outdoor equipment on the school field in the last few weeks so some of the children have been trying it out in small groups. While out there, football was also popular with some and they enjoyed being able to score a goal in the goalposts. As you can see, the children showed great skills and confidence in tackling some of the challenging equipment.

Story Time

Bethany’s family likes the photos of Primary 2 reading their stories in Nursery:

“Bethany was very excited because she was able to read her story to her little brother! Noah seemed to enjoy it too!”

Thank you to Primary 2 and Mrs. Mahon for a great visit. It was lovely to see some brothers and sisters reading together and all the children seemed to enjoy your visit.

“That’s Not My Teddy”

Primary 2 has been very busy lately, writing their own version of the story “That’s Not My Teddy”. Not only was each child an author but an illustrator too, as they designed their own teddy characters in their stories. The final books looked wonderful and Primary 2 children kindly visited us one afternoon recently to read their stories to Nursery children. Well done all the boys and girls from Primary 2. We think that you are super authors and illustrators and the Nursery children thoroughly enjoyed your visit.

A Celebration of Scotland

display scotlandOver the past week the children have been learning a little about Scotland and Robert Burns. We have been looking at tartan and the Scottish flag in the art area where some super work has been created. As you can see, we have displayed some of their work in the school corridor so take the opportunity to have a look if you are passing by. We will post more of the children’s art work on here soon.
We look forward to welcoming everyone back tomorrow (Tuesday) when we will hold our Scottish celebration so get your tartan hunted out boys and girls.

Primary 1 Enrolment

As you may be aware, P1 enrolment will take place on Tuesday, 12th January and Wednesday, 13th January 2016 between 9.00 am and 3.30 pm for children who will be five on or before 28th February 2017. You should enrol at your catchment primary school. If you are unsure of your catchment school, please use the “find my nearest” tool on the www.dumgal.gov.uk website.

When visiting your catchment school you should take your child’s birth certificate together with proof that you live permanently at your address, for example Council tax bill, recent utility bill or bank statement.

There have been some changes to the enrolment process, the main one being there are now two forms; one for those wishing to attend in their catchment school and one for those wishing to make a Placing Request to attend a different primary school to their catchment school. Please attend your catchment school and they will give you the correct form to complete.
