We would like to remind you that tomorrow, Thursday 5th October, is “Go Purple Day” at Hecklegirth. Staff and pupils will wear purple and make donations of £1 per family in aid of the Schiehallion Appeal, the Glasgow Children’s Hospital charity, to help support a pupil in our school who is currently receiving treatment in Glasgow. Any additional donations would be gratefully received.
Let’s hope that we can turn the school and Nursery purple tomorrow.

Autumn Walk To School Week
“Autumn Walk to School Week” begins tomorrow Monday 2nd October. The underlying intention of the initiative is to encourage pupils to walk, cycle or scoot to and from school and Nursery where it is safe to do so.
Dumfries and Galloway Council is supporting and promoting this activity throughout the region and we hope that Hecklegirth children actively participate in this healthy lifestyle initiative. Let’s hope that we are lucky with the weather for “Autumn Walk To School Week” and that we see lots of children joining in.
Who is your Friend?
As part of our recent Health and Wellbeing focus on friendship, we read the story “Fran’s Friend” and talked to the children about who their friends are and what shows them that they are a friend. We thought that we would share some of their comments.
Enid: Louie – we go in the story corner together.
Matthew: Granny – she plays with my toys.
Olivia H.: Emily’s my friend. She pretends to be me and I pretend to be Emily.

First Fire
Last week some of the morning children enjoyed an outdoor fire for the first time. There were several very patient observers watching and waiting for the fire to take hold and, once it got going, they were not disappointed. It is amazing how calming and relaxing it can be simply watching the flames of a fire and the children certainly seemed to enjoy this experience to the extent that some were making an imaginary campfire the next day. Well done boys and girls for listening well and staying safe when we made our first fire. Hopefully we will have another one soon for the afternoon children.
Bug Hotel Pebbles
The pebbles that the children decorated so beautifully for our bug hotel area of the garden have now been put outdoors and we think that they look super. The children looked carefully at the area and decided for themselves where they thought the pebbles would look best. We think those bugs are very lucky to get such a beautifully decorated garden to play in. It would be lovely if you could take time to have a look at them with the children on your way home as they are rightly proud of their hard work.
Bug Hotel
The afternoon children recently found some interesting visitors in a corner of the Nursery garden as a family of snails appeared on our mural. We had some discussions about where they live and how we could look after them which led to the children deciding to make a bug hotel for any passing minibeasts.
The children showed great teamwork and perseverance to help clear the area of weeds then they gathered together pieces of wood and found a basket in the garden to build their bug hotel which now looks very welcoming for all local bugs. This has become a great area of interest for the children who have been having regular checks to see if we have any visitors in their hotel. Well done boys and girls! You can see the difference in these photos that all your hard work has made.
Award Winners
Can You Remember Our Rules?
The children have realised, through discussion, that rules are very important to keep everyone safe and happy. Here they are demonstrating our rules so that we can display them in Nursery as a reminder for everyone. I wonder who can remember the rules to tell their families at home?
Achievement Awards
Congratulations to our achievement award winners who were presented with their trophies at our recent graduation. Staff found it very difficult to make a final choice of who should be the morning and afternoon winners, as there were lots of potential candidates for this award, but we feel that these pupils are worthy recipients of this annual trophy. Very well done to you both and keep up the good work in Primary 1.
Bye Bye Butterflies
It seems like a long time ago but, after caring for them for a week, we recently released the butterflies that the children had observed so closely from being little caterpillars. Although they did not seem keen to leave us, Miss Kerr gave them a helping hand to settle on our willow and flowers in the nature area which gave everyone a chance to have a close look at our little butterflies before we waved them goodbye. I wonder where they are now?
