Who is Jack Frost?

During our discussions about the changing seasons, lots of the children talked about Jack Frost. We talked about what he looks like and where he lives. As always, they had some wonderful ideas which we thought you’d like us to share with you.

Evan: my Dad says Jack Frost makes ice. He’s white and he makes people cold. He eats carrots and lives in the dark.

Ryan: he’s like a scary gruffalo but he’s all white like a snowman and a gruffalo’s brown. He lives on an island in his house.

Jack V: when it’s white snow, he wears white things and that’s why he’s camouflaged. If he’s the same colour as the snow no-one sees him. He lives in a white cave far away.

Rohan: he’s a green boy and looks like fog. He lives in a dark place like underground. When it’s summer he goes to the North Pole.

Layton: Jack Frost is blue and he’s a boy with spikes on his back. He’s got spiky hair and he’s got a bad smile. He lives in an ice globe and eats ice-cream. The ice-cream’s orange. When it’s summer he goes somewhere far away in a snow globe.

Mischa: he looks like a snowman with a tree on his head. He lives in an ice cave.

Finlay: he’s white and no-one can see him ‘cause he lives in the clouds. The sun makes him turn into red hot and when it’s winter again he turns very cold.

Amy: Jack Frost’s a boy. He’s got a scary face and scary eyes. He lives in the North Pole and he builds an icy thing that brings him to Annan.

The Magic Door

Everyone can make magic pictures inside their heads. In Nursery we catch the magic from our magic stick and put it in our heads to make our pictures and there was lots of magic in the air when we read the poem, “The Magic Tree”. We hope you enjoy some of the children’s thoughts on what they think is behind the magic door in the magic tree.

Murray: spiders’ webs and dustbin lids.

Mya: a cat called Tilly. It would be magic and would lick its paws.

Sam L.: an alien from outer space.

Reece: a duckie eating tomatoes.

Miley: a magic fish swimming underwater.

Caleb: a wasp that had been to the fireworks.

Suzie: a dolphin sleeping.

Corey: a princess who waves a magic wand to get a lovely dress.

Layton: lots of grass with flying dust on and a mouse carving people.

Iona: a wizard playing with a ball.

Rohan: frogs – lots of them hopping everywhere.

Lee: the moon – it might even live there.

Jaylin: Cinderella sitting on a chair.

Conner: some red and yellow space rockets flying about.

Neve: a shark eating up everything in the sea.

Ryan: toys like Buzz Lightyear with pop-up wings.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite

We enjoyed a story called “Someone Bigger” where everyone got pulled up in the air by a kite. We closed our eyes and listened to music to help us make magic pictures in our heads of what we might see if we were pulled up in the air by a kite.

Corey  I would see a bird that was racing me like a butterfly and then could float back down.

Jack V.  I saw a boat sinking to the bottom with a giant splash. The big boat bowed and rolled over the oil derrick. The derrick gets oil from under the ocean.

Caleb   I saw a big helicopter going to the helicopter house.

Rohan  I held on really tight and went up, up into the sky.

Murray   I saw my barley field that got baled.

Struan   I saw my Mummy gardening at my Granny’s. I saw the moon – it was shaped like a star.

Evan  I saw Autumn. I saw leaves and trees and giants.

Sam L.  I went to America and saw sea monsters – so many of them and they were angry and I fighted them.

Jack T. I saw dinosaurs with people on.

Milly and Timmy Come to Play

We hope you like the latest visitors to our Nursery. The children loved meeting Milly and Timmy who were very patient and allowed us to stroke and feed them. We hope you enjoy some of our comments and photos of our latest visitors.

Sarah  They’re really cute. They’re littler than a tiny star and they’re not  pretend.

Nairn  I’m going to take my bike and work on the farm and when it’s dark and the lambs run away, I’m going to bring them back to the farm.

Poppy   They were both looking right at me. They’re so cute.

Ellie    One had a sore knee. I hope it gets better.

Summer  We fed the little lambs and one tried to go to sleep.

Niamh  I liked patting them. They felt soft.

Kandinsky Chat

This week we found out a little about the artist, Kandinsky. It was quite tricky trying to say his name and some of us just called him “Kandy” which was a bit easier. A few children thought he looked as old as Robert Burns and wondered if they knew each other because both their pictures looked old.

Once we had made our painting in the style of Kandinsky, we talked about our work and compared it to Kandinsky’s painting. Here are some of our ideas.

  • It looks like snow’s coming down and it’s raining with red and blue.
  • They look like pizza shapes.
  • It makes me think of rainbows. It’s quite like Kandinsky’s.
  • They look like colourful holes.
  • They are kind of different ‘cause we have different colours of paint in Hecklegirth.
  • You can put other colours on top of colours to make it different.
  • Everybody’s done lovely colours that I like.
  • It looks like a rainbow swirl.
  • It’s the same as his but kind of different colours.
  • I think thunder’s coming down.
  • It makes me think they’re lovely.

Our Thoughts on Love

Valentine’s Day has come and gone earlier this week but what do our Nursery children think about love and how we can show someone that we love them?

Zak   “Love feels soft.”

Eva   “You can kiss people you love. I love my puppy Milly and I kiss and cuddle  her.”

Mason   “It feels snug as a bug.”

Dylan   “Love is looking after someone. My Mummy and Daddy look after me.”

Nairn    “I love my Nana. I give her kisses.”

Aedan   “People who love each other, play with each other.”

Joanne   “My Mummy makes lots and lots of love for me. I love my Mummy.”

Sarah   “At night time my Mummy puts my little light on and gives me a big cuddle.”

Mason   “My Mummy gives me drinks when I watch Ben 10. She gives me superduper, electronic, automatic robot cuddles.”

Ruby   “I give my Mummy and Daddy and my little sister 53 kisses.”

Ellie    “Me and my family stay at home and do nice things like play jigsaws. My  brother reads me stories. Sometimes the daddy has to go on night shift.”

Maisie  “My Mummy and Daddy love me so much and today my Mummy gave me Super Noodles and they were so yummy.”

Alicia  “My Mummy loves me. She makes my bed and I help her too.”

“Gung Hay Fat Choy”

With the arrival of Chinese New Year, the sounds of “Gung Hay Fat Choy” (“Happy New Year”) have been heard round Nursery as we learn about the traditions, celebrations and story of this special time for Chinese people. Our Chinese feast consisted of noodles, rice, prawn crackers and various sauces for dipping. Great fun was had by all, trying to use chopsticks – who would have thought that snack could be such fun?

Our own Chinese restaurant in the role play area has been very popular and dancing to Chinese music has provided a wonderful calm among the excitement. Some of the children’s ideas about life in China have been delightful: there may not be purple houses made from butterflies, sparkles and stars with fairies at the bottom” in China,  as one child suggested, but what an imaginative picture she painted.

“Gung Hay Fat Choy” to families and friends from all the children and staff at Hecklegirth Nursery.

Nursery Welcomes Some Special Visitors

On our return to Nursery this week, we all enjoyed a very exciting, “hands-on” visit by Zoolab.

A cockroach called Larry, Maurice the millipede and best friends, Oscar and Daisy the snails were among our visitors. We learned some amazing facts about the lifestyles of these animals and the children were particularly impressed by the fact that snails have more teeth than sharks and Larry the cockroach will actually eat smelly socks.

Many of the children also enjoyed the opportunity to stroke and hold these animals, which was a memorable experience. We have captured some of their impressions in photos and comments below. Click on the photos to get a closer view.

Zak: “The spider was good ‘cause it nearly chased that bug”.

Poppy: “Oscar’s kiss feels cold”. (snail)

Jannat: “He’s tickly”. (cockroach)

Remo: Oh! Oh! it feels really really slimy”.(snail)

Aidan: “I liked the snake ‘cause it’s slinky”.

Dylan: “It’s a bit scribbly”. (cockroach on his hand)

Sarah: “What number’s his legs? It looks like a lot.” (the millipede)

Phoebe: “I loved the snake. It felt soft”.
