Outdoor Food

Patrick’s family has been looking at the photos of him making bread to cook on the fire. He enjoyed tasting the marshmallows too.

“Clever boy Patrick 👍.  What a fab time you’re having Patrick! ☺”

“Patrick said the marshmallows were delicious😋😋”

Everyone seemed to enjoy the bread that Patrick helped to make and the marshmallows were certainly very popular.

Cooking Outdoors

The families of Joshua H. and Harvey M. have been looking at the photos of our outdoor cooking on the fire.

“Joshua’s face is full of concentration in this picture. He looks like he is listening & taking everything in. Thats what I like to see, Im so proud of him.”

“Looks like Harvey enjoyed making bread! Maybe he will test his new skills at home one day 😀”

The children really listened well at this activity – learning while having fun. Good luck with the bread making at home Harvey!

Toasting Marshmallows

Following on from the afternoon children’s experience, we set a fire one morning last week. Toasted marshmallows and bread were on the menu which went down a treat. It’s strange how food seems to taste so much better outdoors but there were certainly plenty of children keen to sample it. As with the afternoon children, we were delighted with the children who were so sensible round the fire and showed that they realised how important it was to stay safe.

Outdoor Cooking

On a recent visit to discuss our outdoor environment, the local ranger brought us a great new base for making a fire and the afternoon boys and girls were the first to try it out. While some were intrigued to watch the ranger setting up the fire, others were busy indoors making bread. Lots of measuring and counting skills were needed to make sure we followed the recipe but, as you can see, our team of chefs showed super concentration to produce their dough. Once it was wound round sticks and the fire was ready, the children helped to cook their bread and they melted marshmallows on sticks which brought lots of discussion about the changes happening to them as they were cooked.
We were very impressed with the children’s super listening skills and discussion about staying safe near fire. They certainly deserved to taste the results of their hard work. Thank you very much to Duncan for his help- the children had a great learning experience.

Fairy Garden

After using the hammer and chisel to make doors and windows in the fairy houses, decoration was the next stage. As you can see, the children chose bright colours to complete their houses then it was time to place them in a quiet corner of the garden. A shiny river had to be decorated with blue stones and the brightly painted shells and stones were placed round the little garden. The children seem quite pleased with their work and we think that they have made a lovely little fairy garden, all created from their own imagination.

How to Make a Fairy House

Harris’ family likes the photo of him watching another little boy working with the hammer and chisel:

“Harris is thinking so that is how to do it. I will know what to do when it is my turn to make a fairy house.”

He is certainly paying lots of attention. The children really did show good concentration with that activity.

Parent Comments

Two of our families have been looking at the photos of the children painting shells and stones for the fairy garden:

“Quinn doing what she does best painting herself as well as the shells. X”

“Lily is very excited about the fairy garden! She insisted that I come and have a look and said I had to be very quiet as that’s when the fairies come out! I also heard her telling her granny all about it!”

It’s good to hear that the children are excited about the fairy garden. Let’s hope that the fairies are excited too.
Lily’s family also enjoyed the woodworking photos where the children are using a hammer and chisel:

“Wow! Grandad will be impressed with this photo! He thinks he’s the only joiner in the family!😂”

I’m sure that Grandad will be impressed Lily because you worked so carefully with that hammer and he will be able to see your super concentration in the photo.

Wonderful Woodwork

We posted some photos recently of the children washing logs and slabs of wood as a starting point for making fairy houses for outdoors. The next stage was to carry out some woodwork to make doors and windows so we helped the children to use a hammer and chisel to carve them out of the wood. The hammer was also useful for adding chimneys to the houses. Super listening and very careful work was evident and you can see the look of concentration on their faces as they carried out this tricky task. I wonder if we are seeing some joiners of the future here?
