Happy Reading

We hope that you are all enjoying your summer holiday with your families and that some of you are taking part in our Family Learning Reading Challenge. Lots of the suggestions look like great fun. I wonder if anyone’s read under a table or to their pet yet? Sitting on the grass or on a rug to read also sounds like a lovely challenge for sunny days. Remember to fill in the challenge sheet and return it to Nursery or your Primary 1 teacher by Friday 28th August to enter the prize draw to win a book token. Happy reading everyone!

Language Programme

For those parents who have been using our English language programme to develop their child’s communication skills, I have now added books nine and ten to our blog. They can be found if you click on the link on the right that says “Learning English”. Although initially intended for children with English as an Additional Language, this programme could be useful for any children who need a little help and encouragement to develop their language skills. We hope that these new books are useful to support your child’s learning at home.

When I’m Grown-Up …

As the children have been finding out about the various jobs that are available to them in the future, they have begun to think about which career they might be interested in.

Julia: I’m going to be an artist. They draw and paint.
Max A.: I want to be a rock star.
Finlay G.: I want to drive a train.
Jenson: ride in a fire engine.
Suzie: I want to be a princess sitting on a throne. I’d look after my pets – a rabbit, a dog and a cat.
Summer: I want to be a nurse.
Jacob: I want to be a policeman and drive a police car and wear a police hat.
Fearne: I want to be in a band.
Armana: I want to be a pet shop lady.
Conan: I want to be a boxer with a belt.
Oliver: I want to fly an aeroplane.
Keira R.: be a sweetie seller and sell lots of sweeties on a shop on the corner.
Effy: I want to be a builder. You build houses.
Mollie: I want to be a hairdresser ’cause I like doing my Barbie’s hair.
Eden: I’m going to be a postie when I’m bigger ’cause my Daddy’s a postie.
Charlie: I want to build a big castle.
Isaac: I want to be a fire fighter.
Ayda: I want to be a teacher.
Katie: be a butcher. I’d make cows for everyone.
Joe W.: I want to be a spaceman and go to the moon.
Kacey: I want to be a baker. I’d bake muffins and rolls.
Sophie M: be a flower grower and make and sell them in my shop.

We love all their super ideas. I wonder if any of them will come true?

Developing Talking Skills

Last term we added a section to our blog which gave the parents of children with English as an Additional Language the opportunity to work on the EALIP programme which we use in Nursery. This can be seen when you click on “Learning English” under “Support Information” on the right.
Recently one of our families asked for the books based on learning the body parts and clothes so these have now been added. These materials are helpful in supporting children in their learning, as you can use this tool at home and can hear the correct pronunciation in English.
Although initially intended for children with English as an Additional Language, this programme could be useful for any children who need a little help and encouragement to develop their language skills. We hope that these new books are helpful.

World Book Day Outing

World Book Day was a great success with the children coming to Nursery in their pyjamas with their favourite book. As part of our celebration and our learning about the local community, we also paid a visit to Annan library. As you can see, everyone seemed to enjoy the super stories read by Tina and were keen to discuss which was their favourite.
Lots of children seemed to be familiar with the library and hopefully more may join after this visit. Thank you to all the parents who came along with us. We really appreciate your help.

Super Storytellers

Miss Dennis, our P7/6 teacher, has been having a look at our World Book Day photos and left us a message:

Glad to see world book day activities were enjoyed by nursery children and the primary six buddies. I hope you all enjoyed the stories! Primary 6 from P7/6 certainly enjoyed reading the stories to the nursery pupils and are looking forward to reading more stories with them!

We already know that Primary 6 children are shaping into great buddies and we discovered that they are very good storytellers too. Thank you Miss Dennis for leaving us a comment and thanks also to the super children from your class who did a great job. We look forward to seeing them again soon in Nursery.

Stories In Pyjamas

World Book Day is always a lovely opportunity to celebrate our favourite books and to encourage the children to enjoy stories. This year, as part of a whole school celebration, the Nursery children wore their pyjamas to Nursery and brought in their favourite books. It was great to see that almost everyone participated and amazingly some even brought a book that matched their pyjamas.
Primary 6 buddies from P7/6 came to visit (in their pyjamas of course) and were super storytellers, making sure that every child had their favourite book read to them. We hope that you enjoy these photos from World Book Day – more will follow in the next few days of their visit to Annan library as part of our celebrations.

What Would You Do If A Dragon Came To Stay?

As part of our work on Chinese New Year, a little dragon came to visit us in Nursery which prompted a discussion about what we would do if we got a pet dragon for our birthday. This was an exciting idea for most children and they thought carefully about how they would look after a pet like that.

Sophie S: I’d keep it in my bed. I’ve got a big, big bed for dragons. You could take it up to the park on the swings.
Hollie: it would sleep on the couch ’cause my bed’s only little. It would eat stones.
Fay: I’d give it oranges to eat because they’re so sweet.
Jade S: he would sleep next to me and keep me warmer than my hot water bottle. He would have chicken breast, peas and broccoli for tea. Me and the dragon would have a feast every night.
Aoife: I’d take it to my house and on a walk. Dragons eat apples.
Sophie M: I’d take him down the river to get some fish. He could roast it himself by breathing fire.
Sian: it would sleep under my bed and eat sausages and peas.
Oliver: I’d keep it where it would be safe – in a cage so it wouldn’t run away.
Effy: if I had a dragon, I’d keep it in a tent inside. You’d need a big tent. I’d feed it leaves.
Conan: I’d keep it in a cage but inside to keep it warm. I’d give it chicken and peas.
Willow: I’d keep it in my tree house. My Mummy said it’s for your teddies and your dragon.
Torrin: I’d keep it in a basket made out of metal with a metal lid and a lock so it can’t get out. I’d give it something to eat after it had a sleep. It might run away to a knight’s home.
Ewan: I’d keep my dragon in my wardrobe so it wouldn’t fly away.
Zander: he would sleep under my bed to keep my feet warm. I’d give him macaroni.
Dylan: I’d keep him under the bed and give him spaghetti.
Theo: I’d keep it in the living room on the couch. I’d give it cereal – I think it would like Cheerios.
Ben: it would sleep in my cat’s room and eat pizza with pepperoni.

What a lot of super ideas and there were many more. So now we have plenty suggestions of what to do if a dragon ever comes to stay.
