Just when we thought we had seen all the wonderful monsters we were going to see, another two little monsters arrived in Nursery today. Well done both of you – we love your monsters too.

Monster Fun
Neve and Kacey’s families have been looking at our monster photos:
“Neve really enjoyed making her monster loved sticking all the sticky bits on”
“Kacey had great fun making her Loch Ness monster..x”
We love the monsters – they are all so different. It’s been great seeing what everyone has been doing at home.
Hecklegirth Monsters
Thank you so much to all the families who worked with their children to produce such wonderful Hecklegirth monsters. We think that they are all fantastic and it has been clear how much the children have enjoyed this activity by the enthusiasm they have shown when telling us about them. We hope that you enjoy our monster gallery.
Read, Write, Count
We would like to share some great ideas from the Scottish government on a site called “Read, Write, Count”. As a parent or carer, you’re the most important teacher in your child’s life. In fact, research shows that when parents help their child with learning outside of school, the children do better with things like reading and counting. This is a site with ideas to make it easy for parents to bring fun and learning into everyday activities. Whether it’s in the supermarket, on the way to school, at bedtime or sitting down for a meal, “Read, Write, Count” has lots of simple ideas that put smiles on children’s faces while giving them the best start in life. We hope that you have fun with your child using some of these great ideas. Click on the link on the right to “Read, Write, Count” under the heading “Useful Reading”.
Callum’s Sunflower
Callum paid a visit to Nursery today from Primary 1 to show us photos of the sunflower he had grown from the seed he planted in Nursery last term. As you can see, he has looked after his sunflower very well and has shown great gardening skills to grow his plant to an enormous seven feet two inches which we reckon converts to 2.18 metres.
Well done Callum for showing super growing skills and thank you very much for bringing your photos to show us. I wonder if anyone else has photos of their sunflowers grown from the seed planted in Nursery?

From a Small Seed …
Last term the children planted sunflower seeds and took them home as seedlings, having learned how to care for them to make them grow. Mollie’s Mum has sent us this photo of the sunflower that she looked after and said,
“From a small seed……..
Shame I didn’t get Mollie in photo too!”
That is indeed a huge sunflower to have grown from a small seed Mollie. Well done for looking after it so well and thank you for sending us a photo.
Day of The Region
Thank you to those parents who have helped the children make a picture at home to depict their favourite place or thing to do in Annan. These pictures will be displayed later in the week to celebrate Annan’s Day of the Region on Saturday 18th September.
The school grounds will be open to help showcase some of our local clubs and activities. The Nursery and school windows between the John Bell field and the tennis pavilion will be covered in artwork from the four local primary schools so watch out for your pictures there. There’s plenty time for more children to bring in their drawings so keep thinking about what you like best in Annan – we would love to have a picture from you to display to celebrate Annan’s Day of the Region.
Language Programme
For those parents who have been using our English language programme to develop their child’s communication skills, I have now added books eleven and twelve to our blog. They can be found if you click on the link on the right that says “Learning English”. Parents who will be new to Nursery in a few weeks may also find this a helpful tool.
Although initially intended for children with English as an Additional Language, this programme could be useful for any child who needs a little help and encouragement to develop his/her language skills. We hope that these new books are useful to support your child’s learning at home.
Beautiful Butterflies
Alongside our learning about minibeasts and looking after our own little caterpillars, lots of children created their own butterflies at home with their families. We love the range of materials used and the wonderful ideas that you all had. Thank you to all those families who took the time to take part in this activity. Here is a selection of some of the super works of art.

With the approach of Valentine’s Day, we have been talking about who we love. As a home activity, the children drew someone they love and told us why they love them.
