As part of our learning about Chinese New Year, some children chose to make special red ‘lai see’ envelopes which Chinese children receive at this time of year with a gift of money inside. It was tricky to work out how to make the envelopes stick together but the children showed good perseverance with this little problem and enjoyed decorating their envelopes. Hopefully the chocolate coins that were put inside made their way home.

Scottish Fiddle Music
As part of our learning about Scotland, the morning children were very lucky this week to hear some genuine Scottish fiddle music when Edward’s Mum came in to play for us. They saw what music looks like and, as you can see, enjoyed clapping along to a great variety of Scottish tunes and nursery rhymes. We talked about how different pieces made us feel and Edward did a super job of holding the music while his Mum played.
We would like to thank Edward’s Mum very much for spending time with us and providing the children with a great experience.

Chinese Writing
As we are learning about Chinese New Year, the children have been developing their fine motor skills in the art area by using fine brushes to paint Chinese words and numerals. As you can see, they have been careful in their work and lots of children have been keen to try out this activity.
More Burns Celebrations
As promised, we wanted to share some photos from our afternoon Burns celebration. As you can see, the children looked great wearing tartan and most were keen to sample the shortbread, oatcakes, cheese and Irn Bru. As in the morning, the children showed themselves to be confident performers and families and friends looked suitably proud of their performance. Well done boys and girls!
Burns Concert
Ava’s Mum left us a lovely post about our Burns celebration:
“The burns concert was really good all the kids done a great job. Ava loved singing and her drink of irn bru.”
We’re glad that you enjoyed the singing. The children did do well to have learned those songs in a short space of time and to perform them to an audience.
Burns Celebration
Yesterday we celebrated Burns Day with shortbread, oatcakes and cheese and, of course, Irn Bru. We appreciate everyone making a super effort to provide the children with ‘a touch o’ tartan’ – we thought that they looked wonderful. Thank you also to all the family and friends who came to hear the children sing their Scottish songs. It’s important for them to learn to perform to an audience and you certainly helped to make it a memorable occasion. Here you can see some of the morning children enjoying their celebration. Afternoon photos will follow soon.
Enjoying Our Learning
Lily’s family has posted a comment about our Burns activities:
“Lily has really enjoyed practising the dancing and learning the songs. And she especially liked the Iron Bru!!”
Lily has loved participating in our activities this week and has been particularly enjoying dancing with her friends. We’re glad you enjoyed the special snack yesterday too Lily.
Dancing at Home
It’s so nice to see a family comment now that our blog problems are solved. Ava’s family has been looking at the photos of the children trying out Highland dancing:
“Ava had great fun doing the highland dancing she was even doing it at home.”
Well done Ava for having a go at home. The children really did enjoy dancing to the Scottish music and were asking for it again today.
Burns Day
We would like to remind you that we plan to have a small celebration on Burn’s Day, Wednesday 25th January. It would add to the occasion if the children could wear a little ‘touch o’ tartan’. Hopefully most of them have or can borrow a hairband, a ribbon or a scarf for the day and anyone who has a kilt or a tartan outfit would certainly help us to celebrate the day in style. If your child does not have anything tartan, please do not buy anything new as this is a very informal occasion and they will hopefully enjoy themselves regardless of what they are wearing.
If you would like to hear the children singing their Scottish songs, after they have enjoyed their little ‘Burn’s supper’, please come in early at 11.40 or 2.45.
Tartan Everywhere
As mentioned below, the children have been keen to access the art area as they have used different techniques to design their own tartan. As well as sticking different coloured strips to design tartan, they have been creating patterns with paint and different sizes of rollers as well as experimenting with a Paint program on the computer. I wonder if anyone can spot their own tartan?
