Dress in red and make your faces funny was the Hecklegirth challenge on Red Nose Day and the Nursery children took part with great enthusiasm. Thank you to Joe’s Mum for providing the frame which produced some super photos. Thank you also to everyone who gave a donation on the day – the Nursery children raised £49.32. We hope you enjoy these happy faces.

More Burns Fun
As promised, we wanted to share some photos from our afternoon Burns celebration. As you can see, the children looked great wearing tartan and most were keen to sample the shortbread, oatcakes, cheese and Irn Bru. Despite low numbers on Monday afternoon, most of the children showed themselves to be confident performers and families and friends looked suitably proud of their performance. Well done boys and girls!

Burns Celebration
Today we celebrated Burns Day with shortbread, oatcakes and cheese and, of course, Irn Bru. We appreciate everyone making a super effort to provide the children with ‘a touch o’ tartan’ as it added to the occasion. Thank you also to all the family and friends who came to hear the children sing their Scottish songs. It’s so important for them to have an appreciative audience and you certainly helped to make it a memorable occasion for them. Here you can see some of the morning children enjoying their celebration. Afternoon photos will follow soon.

Buddies
As part of our transition work, Primary 6 children visit Nursery every week to play and build relationships with our children. They have worked on what makes a good buddy and are showing great enthusiasm and skills with the younger children. Thank you Primary 6 and those children from Primary 7/6 who have been doing a great job. Keep up the good work – the Nursery children enjoy your visits.

Christmas Enterprise
Thank you to everyone who has placed an order for calendars. The children have been working hard to make all the orders to help raise money for their Christmas party and the “Sticky Kids” show and some calendars are now being sent home. We hope that, at £2.50, you feel that this is a bargain present for family members and we are delighted that we currently have orders worth over £250 which will pay for the show and help towards the cost of our party. We would like to thank you very much for supporting the children to take part in this enterprise project.
Christmas Is Coming
As you may have noticed, there’s a feel of Christmas in Nursery already as the children are beginning to chat about letters to Santa and to learn some Christmas songs. We have also put a post box in each cloakroom area for the children to post cards if they want to bring them for their friends. Here you can see some very busy and excited children helping to decorate the trees in Nursery.

A Cosy Campfire
Planks of wood and a few logs were all that were needed for this group of children to show good enterprising skills and teamwork. They worked so well together, listening to each others’ ideas and showing great focus and perseverance to build a den. The logs were used to make a campfire which one little girl pretended to start by rubbing two sticks together “because it’s what camper people do” and they happily cooked sausages and potatoes. Grass and leaves were put on the roof to “make it cosy” and, at one point, a horse was invited to tea. What a fantastic team!
Outdoor Shapes
As we have been learning about shape and pattern recently, the children have been keen to form shapes with the materials available outdoors. They have talked together a lot to work out how to make their shapes and some have taken it to a different area of the curriculum by forming some letters. One little boy even managed to make his whole name from twigs and rope. As you can imagine, making a circle was the trickiest shape but the children showed themselves to be good problem solvers and came up with great ideas.
Water Working
While the afternoon children were showing their creative side last week in their outdoor music making, the morning children were talking about measure when playing in the garden. As you can see, they used a range of containers to develop their understanding of the concept of measure as they poured from one vessel to another. Apart from being great fun, the children were being encouraged to develop the language of measure using vocabulary such as full, empty, bigger, smaller, biggest, more than, less than and much more. They enjoyed working out, for example, if one container of water would fill a different container or if it would spill over and good teamwork was shown by all those taking part.
