As part of last week’s Health Week activities we took part in a whole school and Nursery relay which involved a baton being passed from class to class all day round the school grounds. Well done to the Nursery children for playing their part in keeping the baton going.

Last week a group of the morning children worked very well together to plan and make a super den. They were creative in the way that they used materials round about them and were delighted with their efforts when it was finished. The final touch had to be a banner so a few of them worked hard to make a sign and they decided that their den would be called “Hecklegirth Nice Place”. It was such a lovely surprise for the afternoon children to arrive at Nursery to find such a wonderful den to play in. Well done boys and girls! You showed great imagination, perseverance and teamwork.
This week the children who are moving to Primary 1 at Hecklegirth found out who their buddies will be. The Nursery pupils met their individual Primary 6 buddies when they came to play and, as always, the buddies showed great skills and attitude with our Nursery children. It was lovely to see them organise a game of “Duck Duck Goose” outdoors which the children loved. We have now planned visits to the school playground and the buddies will go with the children on these visits to encourage and support them both in the empty playground and when the rest of the school is out. Thank you to all the Primary 6 buddies for doing a super job.
Primary 6 are launching their cross-generational digital club on Wednesday at 9.30 – 10.30 in the school’s ICT suite. Parents and grandparents who need help with technology can pop in for a cup of tea and a cake while they get some top advice on using a computer from the trained helpers of Primary 6. The children are really excited about this and want to make it a success so why not pop along on Wednesday for an hour of fun learning?
As you can see from our photos, the Nursery children took part with great enthusiasm in Primary 4’s challenge on Friday to wear something red for Red Nose Day.
Thank you to all those who bought red noses from us earlier in the week as you helped to raise £53 towards the Red Nose Day total and apologies to those who missed out as there wasn’t a single red nose left to buy in the whole school.
Thank you for all your donations and to Amelia’s family for their raffle prize which was won by Ava. Including red nose sales, the raffle and donations on the day Nursery families raised a grand total of £135.45 to add to the whole school contributions so thank you to everyone for their generosity.
Block play and construction provides many learning opportunities such as problem solving, increasing spatial awareness, developing an understanding of 3D shapes, developing fine and gross motor skills, playing co-operatively, decision making, learning to play safely while managing risk … and so much more. Lately lots of children have shown super skills in this area of Nursery and have demonstrated great teamwork showing themselves to be successful learners, confident individuals and effective contributors.
Here is a taster of the children at work in the construction area. These constructions were a complicated multi storey car park with different entrances for different types of vehicles and a tunnel to let people get into the castle from the princess palace without the “baddies” seeing them. Great work boys and girls!

On Friday 24th March Primary 4 will be performing at assembly on the theme of Red Nose Day and they have suggested that children in school and Nursery could wear something red that day. They have also organised for red noses to be on sale for £1, if the children would like to contribute, and a box of red noses is now available in Nursery. Thank you to Primary 4 for your help. We hope that you raise lots of money for this worthwhile cause.
I wonder if anyone has noticed a recent change in our outdoor area? Some of the morning children were very busy recently, creating a new style of den that we had not seen before, using the fence as part of their construction. What great teamwork and perseverance they showed to create a really super den where they enjoyed great imaginative play. The children decided to leave some of the wooden planks round the corner of the fencing so we will wait to see what might develop there next.
Primary 3 recently held a coffee morning in aid of Save the Children. Here are some of the Nursery children, who brought money to support this event, enjoying their coffee morning in the school dinner hall.
Problem solving and teamwork are a big part of many aspects of outdoor play and den building and the imaginative play that often happens in dens very much exemplifies this. Outdoor play is always popular, regardless of weather, and we thought we would share these photos we found from earlier in the year showing some of the children busy at work den building.
