As promised, here are the photos of the afternoon children visiting Rev. McGougan’s church this week and we are looking forward to the Sunshine Room paying a visit on Tuesday. Thank you to those parents who helped us by accompanying us on our outing – we greatly appreciate your help.
As part of learning about places in our community we started our term off with a walk to the United Reform Church this week. Rev. McGougan kindly invited us to his place of work to explore the building and learn what happens there. We found out what different objects in the church are used for and learned a little about its history. The careful climb up the staircase led to the upper part of the church where found out about the pews having been made from a shipwreck and were able to get a super view of the whole of the church.
Rev. McGougan also told us about lots of different groups that meet in the church hall through the week including a group that plays indoor curling. Children and adults alike all had a turn at aiming the curling stone at the target which was great fun and we finished off our visit with a look in the garden where Rev. McGougan showed us the beautiful birds that live there in big cages.
Thank you to Rev. McGougan for making us feel so welcome and to all the parents who came with us on our very interesting outing. Here are the morning children on their visit. We will post afternoon photos soon.
The Sunshine Room children enjoyed a visit to the police station towards the end of term as part of learning about our community and the different jobs we can do there. They all enjoyed seeing the different areas of the police station and, of course, the vans with their sirens and flashing blue lights were popular with most. Thank you to the staff at the police station for their patience and time to show us around as well as to those parents who were kind enough to accompany us on our visit. Hopefully, we should be able to rearrange our postponed visit by the Rainbow Room next term.

Unfortunately the Rainbow Room’s planned visit to the police station tomorrow (March 22nd) has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control. We hope that the children are not too disappointed and we will arrange another visit next term.
Thom’s family has been looking at the photos of our visit to Tesco:
“We were in Tesco and Thom showed me the door that led to the very cold fridge and freezer! He also told me about the tokens and what charities they were for, he enjoyed the visit very much.”
Well done Thom for remembering all about your visit. I think we all enjoyed it and learned lots about working at Tesco.
Shoppers at Tesco may have been a little surprised recently to see lots of Nursery children looking round the store as part of our World of Work Week. We went from the heat of the bakery ovens to the chill of the walk-in fridge and freezer to learn about how food is stored and baked. The area where the lorries make deliveries and the equipment that is used to move them showed the children another side to work at Tesco that they never normally see. The checkout was also popular as everyone had a turn to scan items through the till. We tasted different fruits, watched the chickens turning and heard about all the different types of milk they need to store … it really was a very busy visit.
Thank you to all the Tesco staff who were so patient and helpful on our visit as well as to those parents who came with us on our visit. We learned lots about working in Tesco and everyone was delighted with their goody bag to take home.
The recent visit from a postal officer made the children think about how letters and parcels reach their doors. There were some interesting ideas but Lenny the Letter’s DVD helped the children to learn about a letter or parcel’s journey. We then heard about the different equipment a postal officer uses, including an exciting visit to the playground to see the postal van, and we were amazed that our special visitor even knew where lots of us lived. I wonder if any of our Nursery children will end up delivering our post in the future?

There have been so many great jobs to find out about during World of Work week and one of the visitors adding to the children’s career ideas was our local police officer. Although the main suggestion from the children was that a police officer spends the day putting bad people in jail, they started to think about what other things they might do and came up with some good ideas. Once our visit was over, a few decided to act the part of a police officer and looked quite the part. We are all looking forward to visiting the police station soon when we can find out a little more about this popular job.
One of our visitors during last week’s World of Work activities was Jim’s Mum who told the children about her work on the farm. We appreciated the time she had taken to bring photos of the farm and the animals as well as some samples of animal food which you can see the children examining in several photos. Some children thought that the cow’s food didn’t smell very nice but Ben pointed out “That’s ’cause it’s for cows. They like it”. Thank you to Jim’s Mum for providing the children with a great insight into working life on a farm.

It was a great week and the children really enjoyed having all the visitors in talking about their different jobs so thank you to everyone concerned.
