“We were in Tesco and Thom showed me the door that led to the very cold fridge and freezer! He also told me about the tokens and what charities they were for, he enjoyed the visit very much.”

Shoppers at Tesco may have been a little surprised recently to see lots of Nursery children looking round the store as part of our World of Work Week. We went from the heat of the bakery ovens to the chill of the walk-in fridge and freezer to learn about how food is stored and baked. The area where the lorries make deliveries and the equipment that is used to move them showed the children another side to work at Tesco that they never normally see. The checkout was also popular as everyone had a turn to scan items through the till. We tasted different fruits, watched the chickens turning and heard about all the different types of milk they need to store … it really was a very busy visit.
Thank you to all the Tesco staff who were so patient and helpful on our visit as well as to those parents who came with us on our visit. We learned lots about working in Tesco and everyone was delighted with their goody bag to take home.
Well done to last week’s certificate winners. You certainly deserved your awards.
The recent visit from a postal officer made the children think about how letters and parcels reach their doors. There were some interesting ideas but Lenny the Letter’s DVD helped the children to learn about a letter or parcel’s journey. We then heard about the different equipment a postal officer uses, including an exciting visit to the playground to see the postal van, and we were amazed that our special visitor even knew where lots of us lived. I wonder if any of our Nursery children will end up delivering our post in the future?

There have been so many great jobs to find out about during World of Work week and one of the visitors adding to the children’s career ideas was our local police officer. Although the main suggestion from the children was that a police officer spends the day putting bad people in jail, they started to think about what other things they might do and came up with some good ideas. Once our visit was over, a few decided to act the part of a police officer and looked quite the part. We are all looking forward to visiting the police station soon when we can find out a little more about this popular job.
Dates and times for consultations with your child’s key worker are now on display in the cloakroom area. If none of the available appointments are suitable, please speak to the key worker to arrange an alternative time and please do not hesitate to speak to any staff member if you have any concerns about your child before then.
The children and families who took part in Eileen’s rearranged Read Aloud session last week look like they had a lot of fun. Easter crafts are available next week in the Family Learning room so please remember to add your names to the list on the board in the corridor if you would like to take part.
We would like to remind you that parents and carers should use the John Bell car park and enter Nursery through the Nursery door. We ask that you do not use the staff car park and only enter through the main door of the school if you are collecting a child early or if the playground gate has been locked. Thank you for your co-operation.
One of our visitors during last week’s World of Work activities was Jim’s Mum who told the children about her work on the farm. We appreciated the time she had taken to bring photos of the farm and the animals as well as some samples of animal food which you can see the children examining in several photos. Some children thought that the cow’s food didn’t smell very nice but Ben pointed out “That’s ’cause it’s for cows. They like it”. Thank you to Jim’s Mum for providing the children with a great insight into working life on a farm.
