Outdoor Spring Clean

After all our hard workers got the wood chips barrowed and raked onto the outdoor areas, it was time to transport the topsoil to our digging bed. The huge bag seemed to provide endless trips with barrow loads of soil but eventually our bed was full and the bag was empty. The diggers and spades have been very busy outdoors since the new soil arrived so thank you again to all those children who worked so hard to give our digging area a spring clean.

Special Visitor

Mrs CChildren who will start at Elmvale Primary in August had a lovely visitor to see them in Nursery recently. Mrs. Corrie has been meeting lots of children who have enjoyed showing her their special books. We hope that you all have great fun on your school visits coming up soon and want to thank Mrs. Corrie for her visits which mean a lot to the children and their families.

An Exciting Parcel

An exciting little parcel arrived in Nursery last week which caused everyone to stop and look carefully. It was our own little tub of caterpillars to help our learning about life cycles. The children are keeping a close eye on them and already they have grown considerably. Why not ask the children to show you them in Nursery and see if they can tell you what is going to happen next to our caterpillars?

Baby Talk

One of the Health and Wellbeing learning outcomes at Early Level is to show an awareness of the tasks required to look after a baby so we thought that there could be no better way to find out about this than to invite Miss Awde in to Nursery with her beautiful little baby. The morning children had lots of good questions for Miss Awde as they thought about the differences between themselves and a baby.
Miss Awde and Devon are coming back in this week to visit the afternoon children so they will be able to ask any questions they may have then. Thank you Devon for being a super visitor and for bringing your Mummy with you. We are looking forward to seeing you again soon.

Seed Planting

After learning a little about Vincent Van Gogh, the children have been planting sunflowers as well as painting them. We have talked about what they will need to do to make their seed grow and about the different parts of a plant so hopefully the children should be able to look after them when they bring their sunflowers home soon. We look forward to hearing about some super sunflowers or even seeing a photo once they begin to grow. Fingers crossed that they can be planted outdoors and turn into a lovely burst of sunshine in a corner of everyone’s garden.

Sunflower Art

Having been inspired by our recent discussions about Vincent Van Gogh, the children have had the opportunity to create their own sunflower artwork which has formed beautiful, bright displays in both rooms. We would like to share a selection of some of their work – please take the time to have a look at the displays in Nursery too as we think that the children have produced some great art.

Transition Visit

The children who will soon be making the transition to Primary 1 at Hecklegirth have had another visit to the P1 classrooms to become familiar with their new environments. As you can see, they settled in well and were confident to try out a range of activities including, in some instances, having their snack in Primary 1. Everyone is looking forward to their next visit.

Noah’s Ark

ark3As promised after our visit to his church, Rev. McGougan visited Nursery last week to tell us the story of Noah’s ark and it was lovely to have several parents and younger children joining us, especially as it was Hecklegirth Open Day. ark4Fortunately we had our own ark out as part of the play so some of the children were able to help Rev. McGougan tell the story by putting the animals in the ark when we came to that part of the story. Thank you to Rev. McGougan for taking time out of his busy week to spend time with us – it’s much appreciated.

Garden Delivery

Thom’s family has been looking at the photos of the children busy with the new bark in the garden:

“Thom was very keen to show me the big blue bag when we walked past it on our way home, I notice though he wasn’t there to help with the hard work! I’m surprised as he usually likes getting mucky! We happened to be passing when the truck brought the next bag and he was very pleased the driver waved to us.”

Lots of the children have been helping to spread the next delivery as part of their play. What started out as a little hill of bark is slowly being dug, raked and spread to make a much improved base for our digging area so well done to all those children who have been helping out.
