To make the area round the new bug hotel look more attractive, the children have been decorating pebbles to display in the soil. Everyone was enthusiastic to take part and the children used a wide range of colours and glitter to produce their own designs. Once the varnish has dried, we plan to put their beautiful pebbles out in the garden so you can ask the children to show you them on the way home from Nursery.
The afternoon children recently found some interesting visitors in a corner of the Nursery garden as a family of snails appeared on our mural. We had some discussions about where they live and how we could look after them which led to the children deciding to make a bug hotel for any passing minibeasts.
The children showed great teamwork and perseverance to help clear the area of weeds then they gathered together pieces of wood and found a basket in the garden to build their bug hotel which now looks very welcoming for all local bugs. This has become a great area of interest for the children who have been having regular checks to see if we have any visitors in their hotel. Well done boys and girls! You can see the difference in these photos that all your hard work has made.
We would like to remind you that this week (beginning 11th September) is Scotland’s first Maths Week, a week dedicated to numeracy and mathematics.
To encourage the children’s participation in this national event, we would like them to look out for numbers and shapes in the environment. We would be delighted if they brought examples to Nursery of what they find. This might be some packaging, a cutting from a catalogue or magazine or a photo of something they have found when out and about in the community with their families, such as a road sign or a door number.
We will display the children’s findings in Nursery so that they can be shared and discussed with everyone. We look forward to seeing what the children can find.

The morning children have had their first visit to the hall to enjoy fun activities with Mrs. Foster, our P.E. teacher. They learned that listening skills are very important and had lots of practice at stopping and starting various movements. Running, jumping, hopping, balancing on one leg … there was so much to practise and learn about. Here are the yellow and green groups thoroughly enjoying their first P.E. lesson.
This week it was the turn of the red and blue groups so we hope that they had great fun too. It certainly provides a waken up for our bodies at nine o’clock on a Wednesday morning. Next term the afternoon children will get to know Mrs. Foster on a Wednesday afternoon.
As you may be aware, the Scottish Government is planning to nearly double the hours of free early learning and childcare by 2020. As the views of parents and carers are crucial for the success of this expansion, the Government has commissioned independent researchers to undertake a survey of parents. It is now asking for help from parents of all children 0-5 in our community to share their views by completing a survey which can be found at www.bit.ly/elc-survey .
All parents taking part will have the opportunity to be entered into a prize draw and have the chance to win one of 10 x £100 cash prizes.
The survey is carried out for the Scottish Government by Craigforth, an independent research company.
The children have realised, through discussion, that rules are very important to keep everyone safe and happy. Here they are demonstrating our rules so that we can display them in Nursery as a reminder for everyone. I wonder who can remember the rules to tell their families at home?
Later this year building work will take place in the rooms currently used by Primary 1 to convert them into a Nursery learning environment. This work is part of the provision for a future expansion of hours in Early Learning and Childcare across the region and the country.
We now have the plans for this work which are displayed in the Nursery on the board above the role play area. Please feel free to have a look at them when you are in Nursery with your child as the council would like to share these plans with our families.
Paint, pens and paper are well used in Nursery and lots of children have been enjoying experimenting with art activities in their first couple of week with us, both indoors and out.
