One Windy Day

What can we do on a windy day? Let’s have a look at some of the activities our children got involved in one recent windy day in our garden.
Some flags and a few plastic bags helped the children learn about the impact of the wind and how a change of direction can affect how their make-do kites work. Snack also seems like a whole lot more fun if you enjoy it outdoors regardless of weather and the discovery of two new big wooden boxes provided great opportunities for imaginative play. They started out as pirate ships then the children decided to use the guttering to build ramps for their cars and balls to be rolled in and out of the boxes so lots of teamwork, discussion and problem solving happened led by the children’s own ideas in play. Windy days can be great fun!

Welcome

We would like to welcome two Dumfries College students to our Nursery. Nikita Blair and Sheree Robinson are undertaking their HNC Childhood Practices qualification. Nikita will be with us on Mondays and Tuesdays with Sheree joining us on Wednesdays and Thursdays. We wish them well on their placements and hope that they enjoy their time with us.

Bug Hotel

Our bug hotel is now becoming established in the outdoor area and the turf roof that we have had added is encouraging our little visitors to call in for a stay. The children enjoy investigating which minibeasts are there and we have regularly seen worms, woodlice and slugs which are a source of great interest. These photos show the children having a closer look and the photos of their findings have been taken by the children themselves. What super little scientists they are.

Rollercoaster Ride

Most children love outdoor play and access it regularly. We simply provide the resources and the children’s imagination takes them on fantastic journeys which build their social skills, teamwork, creativity … and support their development in so many areas of the curriculum.
This little group demonstrated their confidence, co-operative skills and creativity when they climbed into the storage box and talked about where they would go and what they could do on their journey. After great discussion, they decided that this was a rollercoaster that they had made and they had such great fun whizzing along on the rollercoaster, waving to their friends, taking turns at the front and talking about places they had been where they had gone on fair rides. It’s amazing what a storage box can provide when a few imaginative children are added in.

WaterAid Fundraising

To help the children begin to understand the wider world, we have been talking to them about the importance of water in our lives and they have been learning that, in some parts of the world, access to clean water and toilets is limited. We talked about what water tastes like in our country and some even tried out what it might feel like to carry a bucket of water on their head and they agreed that it would be very difficult.
As part of this work on global citizenship, we have put an empty water container in Nursery for the children to add any spare coins that you may have to make a contribution to the charity WaterAid. The container sits between the two cloakroom areas so that everyone can see it when they come to Nursery. We are delighted that the children have engaged well with these discussions and some have already kindly put coins in our bottle.
WaterAid is an international not-for-profit organisation, determined to make clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation. They work in 38 countries across Africa, Asia, Central America and the Pacific Region to transform lives in some of the world’s poorest communities.
Around 289,000 children die each year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by dirty water and poor sanitation. That’s nearly 800 children each day, or one child every two minutes. We would like to make a small contribution to make a difference for these children by collecting any spare change you may have.

If you would like to find out more about WaterAid, you can visit www.wateraid.org, follow @WaterAidUK on Twitter or visit their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/wateraid.

We would appreciate your support in our efforts to help the children in this project and any spare coins in our water container will be gratefully received. Thank you to those who have already been kind enough to make a contribution.

Who Is Your Friend?

As part of our recent Health and Wellbeing focus on friendship, we talked to the children about who their friends are and what shows them that they are a friend. We would like to share some of their comments.

Technologies

Some of the children have been developing their technologies skills as they learned how to safely use a hammer. They certainly experienced challenge as they had to follow instructions to stay safe, have an awareness of risk and show concentration and perseverance with this tricky activity. Hammering the nails into the wood and then positioning the elastic bands on their work developed the children’s motor skills and they experienced another area of technologies when they took their own photos of their work. There was a great sense of achievement after this activity and the children were very enthusiastic to try it again.
