Fantastic Fundraising
We are delighted to announce that Hecklegirth Primary and Nursery raised over £600 on “Wear Purple Day”. Thank you so much for all your generous donations. Photos will follow soon.
Hecklegirth Clinic
Life at Hecklegirth Clinic has been hectic over the last few weeks as dolls and children alike have been examined and cured of so many broken limbs, coughs, sore tummies and every other ailment you can imagine. As you can see, there has been a large staff of willing doctors and nurses to help out at our clinic, writing down prescriptions and notes then administering the correct medicine or applying a bandage to cure their poor patients. We think that we might have some budding medical staff of the future here in Hecklegirth Nursery and hope that you enjoy the photos of the children at work.
Go Purple Day
We would like to remind you that tomorrow, Thursday 5th October, is “Go Purple Day” at Hecklegirth. Staff and pupils will wear purple and make donations of £1 per family in aid of the Schiehallion Appeal, the Glasgow Children’s Hospital charity, to help support a pupil in our school who is currently receiving treatment in Glasgow. Any additional donations would be gratefully received.
Let’s hope that we can turn the school and Nursery purple tomorrow.
Why Do We Need Numbers?
As part of our recent activities based on National Maths Week, we talked to the children about why we need numbers. Here are a few of their ideas.
Brooke: you have numbers on buses so you know where you’re going to and what one to go on.
Imoen: the postman needs to know your number.
Olivia B.: we have clocks with numbers so we can see what time it is.
Matthew: I’ve got a new letter box with a number.
Enid: I’ve got a number on my door so people know where you live.
Patrick: you have signs on the road with letters and numbers to show you where to go.
Louie: you need numbers to count.
Olivia H.: there’s numbers on a clock.
James: you need a number on your shirt to say what team you’re in to play rugby.
Cali: my door is number three.
We hope that everyone is keeping an eye out for numbers when they are out and about with their families. I wonder how many other places you can find numbers?
Autumn Walk To School Week
“Autumn Walk to School Week” begins tomorrow Monday 2nd October. The underlying intention of the initiative is to encourage pupils to walk, cycle or scoot to and from school and Nursery where it is safe to do so.
Dumfries and Galloway Council is supporting and promoting this activity throughout the region and we hope that Hecklegirth children actively participate in this healthy lifestyle initiative. Let’s hope that we are lucky with the weather for “Autumn Walk To School Week” and that we see lots of children joining in.
Bookbug Rhyme Time
This week some of the morning children were invited to a Bookbug Rhyme Time event, kindly arranged by Annan library staff, at Newington Sports Centre. Fortunately the weather was kind so our first walk out in the community was very pleasant and the children enjoyed lots of participation in rhyme activities. The Bookbug character joined in some of the songs and games with us which added to the fun for everyone and there was lots of opportunity to practise those all important rhymes. Thank you very much to those parents/carers who gave up their time to accompany us on Tuesday. We really appreciate your help.

Science in the Sun
As promised, we have had our first fire of the year with the afternoon children. It was a strange mix of an activity as we sat and ate ice lollies in the sun at the same time as enjoying the warmth of the fire.
However, this helped us to talk about hot and cold and we made our own little experiment as we predicted and tested what would happen if we put a piece of ice lolly on a bit of metal on the fire. We were quite surprised how long it took for the ice to melt and the children were also interested to hear the noise that it made as it melted. Good science brains boys and girls.
