P6 trip to Dumfries

On Friday 27th of June, P6 classes went to Robert Burns Film Theatre and then onto Dock Park for activities. We had raised money before Christmas by doing enterprising activities so our trip was entirely FREE!!!!

We enjoyed our treats and ice cream whilst watching out film , and then we played on the play equipment at Dock Park, followed by putting and crazy golf. The sun was shining and we had a great day!

Caribbean Games in P6

This term P6 have been studying the Caribbean and the difference in culture with that of Scotland. Our collaborative challenge was to create a game that demonstrated our knowledge of the topic and our creativity. We had a great time creating the games and sharing our learning with each other.

Meet the Author – William Sutcliffe

Primary 4-7 pupils enjoyed an entertaining afternoon, thanks to visiting author William Sutcliffe who was organised to come to Dalbeattie Primary through the Scottish Book Trust. William Sutcliffe is the author of ‘Circus of Thieves and the Raffle of Doom’. Mrs Dyson’s Primary 5 class were so eager to promote this hilarious book to others, that they created their own book trailer (available to watch on our school blog) to be shown at the start of the event. There was a lot of laughter when William Sutcliffe read extracts from his book and selected volunteers to dramatically act them out. The afternoon proved a rewarding experience for all; finding out more about the world of writing and receiving top tips. Pupils were delighted when he took time to sign copies of his book. This was an exciting event for our pupils and William Sutcliffe commented on the wonderful enthusiasm shown.

Circus of Thieves and the Raffle of Doom book trailer

We worked collaboratively to create our own book trailer for ‘Circus of Thieves and the Raffle of Doom’ by William Sutcliffe. We wanted to promote the book and encourage others to read it. The author, William Sutcliffe will be visiting our school as part of Scottish Book Trust’s author visit programme on Thursday 5th June. We included our own sketches of the crazy characters and added our own narrations. We hope you enjoy watching our book trailer and we really recommend reading this brilliant, humorous, chaotic and exciting book. We would love feedback on our book trailer so please feel welcome to leave a comment by clicking on the title above.         Created by Primary 5D

P5D Enterprise

P5D Enterprise
Primary 5D learned how to saw wood safely and used their new skills to create their own wooden photo frames. Mrs Dyson was very proud at how safely they used junior hacksaws and bench hooks. They added in a photo to each frame, showing themselves dressed up as a character from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Primary 5D then designed a persuasive poster to advertise the sale of their frames to family members. After collecting money, they calculated costs and discovered they had made a profit. Primary 5D were very pleased to have raised the £125 needed (P5W were raising the other £125 needed) to pay for their bus to the Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory.

School in the Olden Days

Primary 5D were delighted to be visited by a former Headteacher of Dalbeattie Primary. Mr Kennedy told us great stories of what school was like in the past. We had great fun using ink and quills to write our names. We got a huge fright on hearing the sound of the belt as it hit the table!! We are very glad the belt is no longer used at school. A big thank you to Mr Kennedy for sharing his experiences.

Tropical Fruit tasting with P5D

Primary 5D Tropical Fruit Tasting
As part of our Rainforest topic, we have been learning about tropical fruit. As there were different kinds of fruit that we had not tasted before, Mrs Dyson arranged for us to have a tropical fruit tasting session. We discussed the appearance and fragrance of each fruit, before learning how each is prepared. Mrs Howie very kindly came to help with all the preparation. We learned how to use a sawing motion to cut our own bananas safely. We then helped ourselves to the fruit we wished to try and Mrs Dyson enjoyed hearing all our different responses. Next week, we will use our knowledge of the tropical fruit to write our own Rainforest Fruit Sundae recipes.

Fairtrade Assembly by P5

As part of Fairtrade Fortnight, Primary 5  have been learning about the issue of Fairtrade. We were visited by Mrs Van Zwanenberg [A Traidcraft representative] who made us aware of how Fairtrade products helpcommunities. We received great feedback from many staff and pupils. This Fairtrade Fortnight, please help ensure farmers get a fair price for the bananas they grow by choosing Fairtrade.

P5s go chocolate crazy!

Both Primary 5 classes recently enjoyed an outing to the Cocoa Bean Chocolate Factory as part of their work based on the novel ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl. Melted chocolate was everywhere as pupils licked away chocolate moustaches during their chocolate making workshop. Pupils were excited to make their own decorated chocolate shapes to take home. They gained a wealth of knowledge from the presentation on how chocolate is made. Pupils will be adding to this knowledge in class when preparing their own presentations on ‘The Journey of Chocolate.’
