P7 were visited by Vinnie and Cale, of Dundee Stars Ice Hockey team today and Elliot and Mike who also work for Dundee Stars.

Vinnie from the USA and Cale from Canada spoke to the class about the importance of eating healthily, their training schedules, their positions in the team (both left-wingers), opponents, upcoming games etc.  P7 passed around various equipment that the players wear on the rink and many were surprised to feel how heavy the puck is!

Vinnie and Cale held a session in the gym hall and demonstrated how to flick the wrist when striking the puck with the ice hockey stick.  John, Aiden, Mollie, Charlie and Lewis C had a chance in the goal.

P7 were delighted to receive free passes for the Dundee Stars game against Fife Flyers at Dundee Ice Arena this Sunday. Good luck Dundee Stars!

This term, P7 have listened to various short adaptations of famous Shakespeare plays, including Romeo and Juliet, MacBeth, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello, Antony and Cleopatra, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, Richard III, Henry V and As You Like It.  P7 have discussed the 3 different genres that Shakespeare covered in his plays – Tragedy, History and Comedy.

P7 have written fake Facebook profiles for Romeo and Juliet, tweets to summarise the Acts in Romeo and Juliet, their own playscript depicting the famous balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet, MacBeth Witches Spell, agony aunt Letters from characters in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a summary of a strange dream they have had, newspaper articles detailing deaths in Hamlet, posters advertising a theatre performance of Antony and Cleopatra and their own Shakespearean-style sonnets.

On World Book Day P7 studied some of the words and phrases which Shakespeare himself made up, such as eyesore, scallywag, dwindle, swagger, seen better days, to be or not to be, you’ve got to be cruel to be kind and many more…

At our Celebrating Success Assembly at the end of term, we shall sing a song about Shakespeare and his famous quotes.

P7 enjoyed various activities during this term’s Fit Thursday.  These included:- Parkour, Botcha, Curling, Boxercise, Korfball and Football.

This term P7 have also been learning about how to maintain a healthy mind during challenging times.  Pupils have written down their thoughts and ideas in stress circles (thought, behaviour, actions) and then created their own self-care plan using ideas which can help them to foster a calm composure during stressful times.

On Thursday 2nd March 2017, we dressed up as characters from our favourite books to celebrate World Book Day.

We had the pleasure of welcoming Blair Spittal and former St Ninian’s pupil Lewis Toshney of Dundee Utd into our class to read to us.  Blair read a few chapters from George’s Marvellous Medicine and Lewis read us Frankie’s Magic Football by Frank Lampard.

On Friday 24th February 2017, pupils at St Ninian’s Primary School had the pleasure of welcoming Scottish Judoka Louise Renicks from Coatbridge to St Ninian’s.

Louise competed for Scotland in the women’s 52kg event at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and won a gold medal.  Her sister also competed and won a gold medal too.

P7 learned some judo holds and also listened to a talk from Louise about the importance of eating healthily, getting enough rest and sleep and drinking water to maintain a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Thursday 9th March 2017 – Well Good Drama and Movement Workshop

Primary 7 learned about some of the harmful effects of tobacco today and prepared a drama which they performed for P5/6, P4/5 , and P4.  Various members of staff and parents/guardians also attended.

This is a very important year for P7 pupils as we are in our final year of primary school and prepare to embark on our new learning experiences at High School.  Last term we were visited by 2nd year pupils from St John’s High School who acted as Peer Educators.  They helped us to answer any queries we had about St. John’s and as a result we feel more confident and ready for our transition.

We were visited in class by Mrs Sinclair and Ms Divers on Tuesday 7th February where we were again given opportunities to ask questions and discuss any concerns.

This term, we are going to continue our focus on having a Growth Mindset and an, “I can’t do this yet”, “I will try” and “I can do this” attitude to help best prepare ourselves for starting First Year in August.
