P5 Summer Fayre

For the summer fayre this year we sold fruit kebabs and bee’s wax wraps. We researched ideas for our kebabs and chose a mixture of delicious fruit to use.  We chopped and washed the fruit before putting the pieces onto skewers.

We watched tutorials and read information about bee’s wraps; an eco alternative to cling film. We learnt how to make and care for them. We looked for materials online and when they arrived we made some together in the iclassroom. We made information cards and tied string around each wrap.

Some of us helped sell the kebabs and wraps on our stall at the fayre on Saturday! We sold out quickly and made a profit from our £25 starting budget! 😊 Another very successful enterprise project!

P5 Careers Week

During careers week we were visited by a number of interesting people. They told us about their jobs and the journey that took them to where they are now. Our guests included a mechanic, health visitor, sports coach, scientist, Starbucks manager, legal researcher, PT, physio, florist, visual impairment and speech therapist.

We asked a number of questions to find out more about each person and their career. We now know so much more about the skills and training required to do certain jobs. An important message we received from many of our guests was… ‘do something you enjoy and really care about’. In the future, we may spend much of our life working so it is important to find jobs that will develop our skills and make us happy.

Some of us are now interested in doing jobs we learnt about during careers week!

P5 Biographies

This term we having being learning about famous Dundee citizens past and present. We have also been exploring biographies and their different features. This week we have been researching and making notes about Mary Slessor. We organised the main events from her life in a biography and then evaluated our worked. Miss Douglas marked our working using our school marking codes and we made changes to our biographies as we typed them! We used some other skills in ICT such as copying and pasting images and saving and retrieving documents. Our biographies turned out really well!

P5 Sumdog Winners

Over the last few weeks we have been learning to show and find fractions. To finish the unit, Miss Douglas set up a competition for us on Sumdog to allow us to demonstrate our knowledge of fractions. We had to use our new skills to complete games and earn points.

Well done to Logan and Zoe who answered the most questions correctly! 😊

P5 Fractions

This week we have been continuing to learn about fractions. We can now write fractions correctly and show fractions within shapes. We can work out equivalent fractions and find a fraction of an anount. On Thursday we played some different fraction games which allowed us to demonstrate our new fraction knowledge and have some fun!

P5 Play Champs with P2

We have been taking part in the Play Champs Programme for 8 weeks now. In week 7 we decided on some of our favourite games to teach to another class and on Friday P2 joined us for the afternoon. We demonstrated and explained the rules of each game before playing with Primary 2. They were able to follow our instructions and play all 4 games. The Play Champ leaders and Miss Douglas were extremely impressed with how we cooperated with each other to lead the activities and also with how we encouraged and cared for the younger pupils during the session. 😊

P5 Co-operative Learning

In the first week of term we re-arranged the tables in the class and joined new groups to work with.

We were each given puzzle pieces that when placed together became 5 unusual pieces of art. We discussed the artworks and what we thought they might be.

We then took time to get to know our new group members. Using information shared, we came up with a team name and designed a banner to reflect our group.

We all had a specific role within our team and we worked together to make fair decisions. We then shared our team names with the rest of the class and came up with our own ‘secret’ group handshake! That was a lot of fun!

P5 ICT

During our last ICT slot we logged into Glow; our school’s educational platform for learning. Through Glow we also have access to Outlook and other usesful programmes such as Word and PowerPoint.

We learnt about email and how to write and send one. We all successfully sent an email to Miss Douglas and a friend in the class. Our Glow email will be used for learning tasks only and to send and receive information about homework.

We also discussed the importance of sending appropriate messages as emails cannot be ‘unsent’.

We will be continue to explore Glow and its many resources throughout this term. We will be using our school email account to share ideas with others when collaborating on group tasks and to post comments on the class blog.

It is nice to see some P5 pupils have left some comments on recent posts on the blog. 😊

P5 Solo Talks

This term one of the compulsory homework tasks was to prepare a presentation on a subject of personal interest. The finished talks varied in topic – from lego to bacteria, horses to music and fashion to football.

We enjoyed listening to each other’s presenations and were full of questions at the end. Miss Douglas was also impressed by the effort each pupil put in and even though some were nervous, they still carried on with encouragent from their classmates.

P5 did a fantastic job, it was great to see some pupils highlighting words and details on their slides and elaborating further on their points. We all learned so much! Here are some of us in action:
