Primary 5 Outdoor Learning – Data Handling

This week we began learning about data handling. We know that data or statistics is about collecting and showing information in way that makes it easy to read and draw conclusions from. This we have mainly focused on frequency tables and line graphs. On Friday we went outside and collected items to use as our ‘data’. We drew our own tables and graphs. We added some questions for other pairs to answer during a walkabout at the end of the activity. Next week, we will focus on bar graphs, pie charts and venn diagrams.

P5 Human Body

This term we are going to be learning about the human body. During our last co-operative learning task we taught each other about the main organs.

We started by looking at diagrams and reading information about one organ. We made notes and drew pictures to do with the information we found. We then looked over our research and discussed it within our groups.

We then formed new groups made up of one expert from each original group. We shared our new learning and found out interesting facts about the different organs in the body. We listened carefully to each other and asked questions to find out more.

We even taught Miss Douglas a thing or two! 🙂

Some of us have also been busy at home creating our own games and models to do with the senses and the human body.

P5 P.E

In P.E we have been doing different warm – ups to raise our body temperature, increase our pulse-rate and mobilise our joints.  This helps to reduce our chances of injury and get oxygen flowing around our body.

We then played games to keep our heart rate up and keep us moving. At the end of the session,  we did some stretches to help our blood flow and heart rate to return to normal. We will continue to work on our fitness throughout the term.

P5 Play in the Pod/Literacy

On Thursday, we went out to play and used items from the pod to build all sorts of things.

We recently finished reading ‘The Midnight Gang’ and we watched the BBC adaption together this week. This helped to deepen our understanding of the book even further and was great fun to watch. We loved the characters and the adventures they went on. We have since written an adventure of our own for the Midnight Gang during our class literacy time.

We used some of the events/characters from the story to inspire our roleplay and creations during our time at the pod! You might notice some of us pretending to be hospital patients.

We love playing with friends and using our imagination to create nooks, dens, ships and houses in our outdoor space!

P5 Electricity

In term 2 we did lots of learning on electricity. We learnt about electrical and non-electrical appliances. We compared these and realised that life would be more difficult and everyday tasks would be more time consuming without electricity.

We learned that electricity is a secondary energy source. We know that it can be made in different ways in power stations. Electricity then travels to smaller sub-stations before reaching our homes through cables.

We know that current electricity is dangerous and we should make sensible choices to protect ourselves from it. We can identify different hazards and what to do if we spot one.

We also looked at symbols that represent electrical components and put together our own circuits.

Some of us brought in working electricity models we made at home!

P5 Art

This term we have been exploring colour and how it is used by artists. We mixed colours in a colour wheel to create secondary and tertiary colours. We now know different colour schemes such as warm and cool. We can use the colour wheel to great artwork with complimentary colours.

We have looked at the work of Japanese Yayoi Kasama. We created a piece of work inspired by her. We made sure our background contrasted with our pumpkins.

P5 Spooky Fun

Just before Halloween, author Matthew Fit visited P5 to share some poems he has rewritten in Scots. You might have read his book The Eejits, a Scots translation of Roald Dahl’s The Twits. We enjoyed listening to him reading and acting out different words and parts from his work. Matthew taught us spooky Scots words such as skelet, caunle, moosewab, carline and bizzum. We added these words with little drawings to our haunted house.

A few days later we used some of these new words to write the ending to a spooky story of our own.

On halloween we dressed up, danced and played games at our Autumn party.

P5 Fit Thursday

During Fit Thursday we took part in a number of fun activities and sports including botcha, boxercise, judo, cricket, football and dancing. We were lucky to have experts teaching us throughout the day. We all worked well in our teams and with different partners.

Thanks to Mr McCormack for organising an active and fun day for us all.
