Some of our Dundee learning…

We have created this display about Dundee to help show our learning experiences and opportunities this term. We are very proud of our hard work!

We loved learning about Dundee’s links with the river.  We know that shipbuilding and whaling were a big part of our cities history.  Here is some of our lovely Tay Whale art.

We compared photos of old Dundee with photos of the Dundee we live in today.  We noticed that the waterfront has changed from having lots and lots of ships and people working on building ships, to more about eating out and having fun! Transport and how children spend their time has also changed a lot!!!

ICT – mouse control

Today in ICT we combined our learning all about the story of 10 with how to successfully use the mouse. Miss Thompson set us a challenge of reach 10 points each…it was lots of fun! We are becoming more confident working with the mouse and computers each week.

Our last of 3 learning trips – The Discovery

Today we spent all day bringing our learning about Dundee’s ship building history to life on board the RRS Discovery. On route we spotted our friends Dennis and Gnasher along with other famous Beano comic characters. We toured the ship and learned all about the different jobs on board and what life was like for both the crew and the officers. We spoke about whether we would like to do these jobs, most of which were very dangerous.  We tried to figure out what different parts of the ships were and why they were important to the ships work during Antarctic expeditions. We saw where the crew slept and spend their free time and compared this with that of the Officers. Some of us thought we would prefer to be Officers because they had more space and their own beds, but others thought being with the crew was best because it was more cosy and you got a better sleep in a hammock. After lunch we learned more about being an explorer in the Antarctic by trying on some old and new clothes and discussing what we thought of them and why they were suited to work at the South Pole.  We watched a special movie with special wind and sound effects and took part in a group treasure hunt whilst exploring the museum and learning even more about the history of our city. It was a great day and we only just made it back to school in time!!!

Our Learning This Week

It has been our final week with our Student Teacher Miss Grant.  We have been learning lots!

In literacy we have been reading a new novel Georges Marvellous Medicine.  It has lots of funny bits!  We also did lots of exciting literacy learning linked to World Book Day.  We had a number of guest readers, including Stewart and Erin from Tay Fm.  They read us two stories all about poo and pants….yuck! We had great fun showing off our costumes at the whole school costume parade too!

In numeracy we have been working hard on number order and addition.  We can use a range of strategies to find the correct answer quickly and confidently.

In PE we have been working on our balancing and jumping ability.  We played lots of games to help us find a safe space and work together.

In IDL we have been learning more about our city and how it has changed over time.  We have been focussing on the Tay Rail Bridge and the Law Hill.  On Monday we will round of our weeks of trips by visiting The Discovery and the bridge.  We can’t wait for another adventure!!!
