The boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed their first sports day! I was very proud of how confident and resilient they all were throughout the afternoon.

Thank you to all the families who came to cheer on the children. They loved seeing you all and appreciated your support.

This week the children have thoroughly enjoyed practising and then performing the story of The Enormous Turnip to their families. It was lovely to see such confident individuals as well as amazing support from families. Thank you so much!

The children also received a visit from a local farmer who spoke about the types of seeds that grow on their farm and the machinery involved in looking after the seeds from planting to cultivation. The children enjoyed this very much, especially planting their own runner beans.

In Numeracy we have finished looking at halves and quarters and have now introduced the concept of multiplication by firstly learning to count in 2s, 5s, and 10s. Practise of this at home would be very helpful.

In Literacy we have learned a new sound, ‘ea’ like ‘eat’ or ‘steam’

Reading books have been sent home again after all of our long weekends are (almost) over. The children are doing so well within reading. Encouragement at home of different strategies would be good. This would include sounding out a word. Looking at the picture for clues or reading on to try and make sense of the tricky word.

Through our learning context, Redwell’s Wildlife, we will be learning about:

• The effect of litter in our playground and how to reduce this
• Trees and Plants in our grounds
• Areas of our playground, such as the pond and the vegetable patch
• Recycling at Redwell and within the wider community
• Life cycle of animals
• Food chains and food webs

Core Literacy:

• We will continue to learn more sound digraphs and revise previously taught sounds.
• Tricky words will be taught and used in class.
• We will continue to focus on using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in our writing. Some children will develop their use of connectives to join 2 sentences together.
• We will learn about labelling within our writing.
• We will begin to write imaginative stories where we will create our own characters.
• We will also learn about functional writing such as writing letters, postcards and invitations.

Core Mathematics and Numeracy:

• We will be learning about number bonds up to 10
• We will be learning the concepts of doubling and halving
• We will be learning how to estimate measurements and then check these using appropriate units.
• Through our topic about Redwell’s Wildlife, we will develop our data handling skills and will be focusing on using tally marks and creating different tables and charts.
• We will also be continuing to focus on counting in 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and identifying the numbers that come before and after a given number.
• We will be able to identify halves and quarters of shapes and numbers.

Core Health and Wellbeing:

• We will be learning about different needs of living things, including humans.
• We will be learning about different families.
• We will also be covering the Clackmannanshire Council’s Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood Education course of work.

This term has been such a busy and productive one. The children have achieved so much and are continuing to enjoy their time at school.

In Maths this week we have looked at the seasons and completed several sorting and matching activities with pictures associated with the different seasons.

In Literacy we looked at the story of the Enormous Turnip and worked together to sequence the story.

We also enjoyed making Mothers Day cards. The children are so proud of their creation and I am sure they have all been gratefully received.

We also wished Yashfa and Murdo a Happy Birthday as they celebrate turning 6 years old this week.

I wish you all a very restful and enjoyable holiday, one that the children truly deserve after all of their hard work. I look forward to welcoming the children back on Monday 15th April.

HAPPY HOLIDAY!!!

This week the children have started preparing for their Sharing of Learning Afternoon which is on Thursday 2nd May. They have enjoyed learning the songs and are looking forward to getting their parts next week.

In Maths the children have been consolidating their learning of subtraction and have even been solving sums with missing numbers.

In Literacy the children have been doing well with their reading and within writing they are now actively using their knowledge of the letter sounds to write independently.

The children have been also working hard making enormous turnips to adorn the stage during our Sharing of Learning Afternoon.

This week the children have enjoyed taking part in learning activities in a real life context.

In Maths the children applied their learning of tally marks and pictograms to create their own pictograms about the amount of litter found in the playground after play time. The children enjoyed doing a litter pick and using what they found to create a pictogram.

As part of our topic about he environment and wildlife we have enjoyed watching our cress seeds grow. In the space of a week they grown from tiny seeds to plants in full bloom. The children have enjoyed watering them and measuring their growth with a ruler.

It was Elsie’s birthday on Tuesday and we enjoyed singing Happy Birthday and hearing all about her special day.

I hope everyone had a lovely break. It has been lovely to hear all of the children’s news from their holidays. This has been a very busy week for us, in P1M!

In Literacy we have continued to learn two new sounds, ‘air’ and ‘ir’ as well as continuing our fabulous progress within reading. The children are enjoying taking part in paired reading and helping each other with some word attack strategies for tricky words. We also read the story, ‘Tidy’ by Emily Gravett this week and we look forward to exploring the themes around the environment within the story over the coming weeks.

In Maths we have been learning about weight and exploring the use of the words ‘heavy’ and ‘light’ to sort objects into groups. The children enjoyed exploring the classroom for objects and choosing an appropriate group to sort them into.

We also worked with metre sticks this week and explored the classroom to find things that were longer or shorter than a metre.

As part of our topic on wildlife and the local environment we decided to plant our own cress seeds which the children really enjoyed. We learned that plants need soil, water and sunlight to grow. We look forward to watching the growth of our plants over the next few weeks.

It has been lovely to welcome all of the children back after he Christmas break and hear about all the things they have got up to.

Over the Christmas holidays we had 2 birthdays. Alexander and Joe both turned 5. We enjoyed singing Happy Birthday and hearing about their special day.

This term there is a change to our P.E. days which is now Wednesday and Friday.

The last 2 weeks we have been working hard learning about money. We can now recognise all coins, order coins and make totals to 10p.

The children have just been introduced to the term ‘take away’ and have been pr rising simple subtraction problems.

The children have also been enjoying reading with friends in lots of interesting spaces in the classroom.

This week has been a week full of festive cheer and Christmas fun.

We enjoyed our Christmas party and our surprise letter from Santa. He even left us a candy cane each. Wow!

we also sang happy birthday to Cammie this week who turned 5.

I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I look forward to welcoming the boys and girls back in January.

This week the children walked to a local post box to post their letters to Santa. We sang Santas favourite song, ‘Jingle Bells’ to help the letters on their way. While we were there th postman arrived and had a chance to ask him about his work which links nicely to our topic, ‘People Who Help Us.’

We have been working really hard on our Nativity Show for you this year and the children are really looking forward to performing in front of their families next week. I’d like to thank you all for your efforts arranging your child’s costume for the Nativity. They all look fabulous which I’m sure you will agree when you see the children perform next week.

We wished Isla a big happy birthday this week. She turned 5 on Sunday and enjoyed telling us about her special day. The unicorn cake sounded delicious!
