P5/6/7 with Mr Gardiner

It has been a busy Term 1  with the children coming back to school. after the holidays. We may be going through a challenging time with Covid this year, however we are not letting that stop us!

With the school having a focus on Outdoor Learning we have managed to get out of the classroom as much as possible this year, using the environment around us to increase our learning opportunities.

In Numeracy we have been covering aspects of measurement, time, fractions and decimals. All of which has had elements taught outdoors.

In Literacy we have been using the book “Wolf Brother” by Michelle Paver as our novel study.

Through the novel we have focused on our Grammar, Language, Creative Writing as well as our Comprehension skills.

We have even had a few “Tweets” back from the author herself on some our our work! How good is that!

The class have really gotten in to the book and it has gone down very well, even asking if we could do a novel study of the 2nd book in the series (maybe next year).

I am a firm believe that in order to be a “good” reader, we need to be confident in all three aspects of reading, De-Coding, Fluency and Comprehension. With the children, we have identified the particular aspect that they need to work on and implement key strategies for this to happen. As they have improved, their focus has changed to different aspects.

Another main focuses this year has been the Health and Well-being of each child. We were aiming to make sure that every child was settled on return, ready and able to learn. We are continuing these practices on with regular breaks, quiet time, breathing  exercises and fresh air to name a few.

As the children are entering the upper stages of the school we have be looking at developing our knowledge and understanding of relationships and parenthood as well as understanding the changes that some of our bodies are going through at this stage of our lives. It’s an important mile stone for many of us and one that is necessary for them to have an understanding of.

It has been an different year so far but one the P567 class is making the most of.
