Growing Challenge by the Eco Group and Mrs Flockton

Hello all and especially to my Eco Committee,

Maybe with some time at home you have been able to plant some seeds this year. I had just broken the news to Mrs Taylor that P3 were going to plant lots of seeds in class when they announced the school closures so P3 never had the chance in the end. We also had a delivery of seed potatoes from One Seed Forward so I will plant those at home and come up with a plan for use when we all return.

Anyway, we have been busy planting our own seeds and I have included some photos below, these were planted for a Spring Fayre at my daughters school so looks like we will have to make room for lots more in the greenhouse. We have planted some unusual varieties this year including pink and black tomatoes and yellow courgettes. Let me know what you are planting and there is even a wee prize for anyone who can guess the mystery plant on the second last picture.

Finally,  I have a Challenge task not on the grids to design your own “Perfect Garden”. This could either be drawn, designed on the computer or made up from magazine images. For those of you at Brownies you could get started on your Gardening badge with these tasks or let me know if you have started any others (Scouts or Guides too). You can upload a photo or comment telling us what you are doing but please stay safe when sharing this.

  1. Dear Eco Comittee and Mrs Flockton, you have inspired me. I am going to try growing some seeds. Thank you for sharing your ideas.

    1. Fantastic Cameron, hope you get the tatties. Our peas have grown much quicker than usual in the spring sun, although the slugs always eat them when I put them in garden, any tips?
It’s not a barley type plant but its something I have never grown before and its a very unusual ingredient, I will put up answer at end of day.

    2. Cameron the mystery plant was Fennel, I was given some seeds and I didn’t expect it to grow but it has!! I will see if I can produce any Fennel so we can try some at school.
I’m owe you a prize for your guess.

          1. I shall certainly do my best, Mrs Flockton! I don’t often eat fennel but I definitely have recipes that contain it.

  2. Hi Mrs Flockton I think the mystery plant is some type of grain like barley.

I’ve got peas and sunflowers and mums going to try and get some tatties.

    1. How is that going Lewis and Eva? I planted a few tomatoes a few months ago and they are almost touching the roof!

    2. That sounds fun Lewis and Eva, have they grown? Share a photo on seesaw or email if so. I would love to see them.

  3. That is a super fun challenge Mrs Flockton, I am trying to make my own indoor garden and it’s going super. Wish I could show you some photos.

  4. Dear Eco Group & Mrs Flockton
I have been catching up with blog messages and wanted you to know that during the Easter break I started to weed and clear my wee meadow at the back of my house. The earth has been very wet, then very dry, so the soil was very hard to turnover and had so many weeds to clear (I’ve been doing this by hand).
It’s taking me some time, but I’m nearly ready to sow some seeds.
I bought the seeds sometime ago, so can’t really remember which flowers will appear. Once I’ve finished digging and have sowed the seeds I will take a picture, then once the flowers appear I will take more pictures.
I’ve enjoyed being outside, but have had to put on plenty suntan cream, along with a long sleeved top and hat.
Hope you have been enjoying being outside too. Mrs Webster

    1. Sounds like you have been busy Mrs Webster. We look forward to the photos when you finish and when things grow.

  5. Hi
    Mrs Flockton,

I’ve been ever so busy in the garden, I helped mummy plant salad and herb seeds, we have also planted marigolds and begonia flowers.
I have even started an experiment to see if I can grow a tree from some acorns I found lying around, it might not work but we can try 🤗
I don’t know how to send you a picture

    1. Excellent work Dylan. Mum can either send pictures to Seesaw as normal or by email (all the details are in Seesaw) I look forward to seeing if the Acorn grows into a mighty Oak.
