P6C Climate Change Models

This week, P6C have been creative with plastic recycled items. The challenge was to build a model representing an animal species which is endangered because of climate change. During this task we helped to reduce the plastic ocean by using recycled plastic and we were raising awareness of the effects of global warming.

p3F Sharing the Learning Showcase on Castles

Thank you to all our visitors who came to see our castles. We investigated materials as part of science week.  Then we designed and made our own castles and included many castle features. Our visitors read our fact files on castles.  They also had to see who they were related to from the castle portraits! We had a banquet to enjoy our Red Nose Day cupcakes wearing our red crowns.  We listened to banguet music and tried to recognise all the different instruments.

P2M Information Handling

This week P2M have been learning about the different ways we collect information everyday in school e.g. the register, lunch numbers and the Travel Tracker. We have discussed why information needs to be collected and how different people use the information.

We have been exploring different ways to record and display information. We have been learning how to use tally marks accurately.

Today we investigated how to sort and display information about our “playpieces”. First of all we sorted them according to how healthy and unhealthy they were. We then looked at the display and asked what information we could take from the display. Today it seems, we had more unhealthy snacks than healthy ones!

Then we sorted them a different way…Sweet or Savoury?

Then we wondered where Mrs Morgan’s popcorn should go because it was both! Poppy suggested it should go in the middle! So we overlapped the circles to create a new category…Sweet & Savoury. We learned these types of information displays are called Venn diagrams. We will be learning more about these this week.

P2M British Science Week

We have been conducting some science experiments this week for British Science Week.

We conducted a climate change experiment as part of our Energy Around Us topic which showed how greenhouse gases are building in the atmosphere and causing the Earth to heat up.

Today we were investigating how absorbent paper carries water. We looked at how colours mix to create a new colour. We made predictions about what would happen. We carried out the experiment and wrote up our report.

P2M Science Week

We have been doing science experiments as part of science week. Yesterday we set up 2 trays with ice cubes and covered one tray with cling film. We put them in the sun. We timed which ice cube melted fastest. The one with the cling film melted fastest as the sun’s heat could get in but not out. This  demonstrated the effect of greenhouse gases on our planet.

Today we used wax candles to write a secret message to our friend. We used paint to read it. Wax repels paint so we could read the message.

World Book Day in P1A

We celebrated World Book Day, with a day full of our favourite stories and small world play.

We listened to Julia Donaldson’s ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’,  and then enjoyed re-telling the story in our newly opened Small World Play Zone in the classroom.

We finished our day off with a visit to the library where we had the opportunity to use our book tokens to get a World Book Day book!

Enjoy sharing your new library book and World Day Book Day book at home!

P6C are entrepreneurs for the day!

P6C have had a great day today taking part in a Developing Young Workforce workshop. Richard from Elevator came to our class and taught us all about how to be entrepreneurs.

We learned about famous Scottish inventions and then we had the challenge of making our own improved versions of one of these inventions. We had to make a prototype of our product as well as a slogan, a name and an advert. We then presented our products to the class.

During this workshop we developed lots of skills including team work, working on a deadline, co-operation, creativity and being resourceful. Thank you Richard!

World Book Day

Wow, P6R looked amazing in all their World Book Day outfits.  We wrote letters to persuade our friends to read our favourite book and relaxed reading for our own enjoyment.
