P1/2 Update January 2023

In Numeracy P2 are using all addition and subtraction to 20 facts to solve problems. Then we are going to work with numbers to 100. P1 are building on addition to 10 facts and will learn their first strategies for adding quickly. (i.e. if you add 1 to any number, you get the number after; adding zero doesn’t change numbers; always start from the larger number, check for doubles).

We are also learning about time in Maths and have been thinking about the seasons. P1 have been practising their days of the week, and P2 months of the year. Families could really help with this by talking about what activities they will do on different days, which months birthdays are in etc. P.1 will be learning to tell the time on the hour, and P2 will cover half past the hour and durations of time.

In Literacy P1 have finally got to the end of their single letter sounds and will be revising all of them along with their letter formation. We will begin to learn sounds made of 2 letters, read cvc words and recognise some high frequency words. P2 are learning about verbs in Grammar and will be finding out about past, present and future. They also began working on improving their comprehension, answering different types of questions about their reading books.

In French we have been enjoying a number of games to help us learn colours and we will be continuing to use these. In our Art lessons we are looking at different works from Aberdeen Art Gallery, starting with ‘Afterglow’, a lovely winter painting by Joseph Farquharson, painted in the forest of Birse on the Finzean estate. If you are in Aberdeen, pop into the Art Gallery to see it.

We started a mini topic about Scotland where we were learning about the world around us, Robert Burns, Scottish food and listening to Scots language. This will lead us into our next topic where we will investigate where our food comes from, including talking about seasons, local food, sources and healthy diet. If any parents would like to come and to the class on any of the topics, they would be most welcome!

P2/3 Term 3 Newsletter

In numeracy this term we will be focusing on subtraction.  The children will be carrying out either 2-digit, 3-digit or 4-digit subtraction sums, using the correct mathematical vocabulary.  We will be learning different strategies to support us i.e., using concrete materials, counting back on a number line/number square whilst also building our mental agility skills through active learning activities.  To support the children with their learning you can write out sums for them to answer, ask them sums to work out in their head or they can play interactive games on a device such as – https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/subtraction-grids. In mathematics this term we will be learning money.  Our addition and subtraction skills will help us with our learning in money.

In literacy, we will be developing our writing skills through developing our ability to use a variety of openers, connectives and extending our vocabulary that we can use in our writing.  We will also be improving our punctuation skills, understanding where and when you can use a comma, exclamation mark and question mark.  Our topic this term is Julia Donaldson stories therefore we will use these to explore ‘Wow’ words which we can use in our own writing.

In Health and Wellbeing, we will be discussing our growing bodies and what the correct names for parts of our bodies are.  We will also be discussing that my body belongs to me and learning the importance of personal space.  In p.e. we will be participating in Scottish Country Dancing and then we will be learning gymnastics and how we can link actions and skills to create movement patterns and sequences.

P1/2 Update – December 2022

In Literacy P1 have covered the 4th set of sounds and have been writing labels. P2 have been learning to write a list, working on alphabetical order and sound blends. We have also worked on the books from our Bookbug packs.

In Numeracy , now that P1 are secure in their numbers to 10, we have begun addition and will continue next term. P2s were working on different strategies to take away from 20. We have also been working on Measure and have been learning about Length and Weight.

The children have been very excited about our Night and Day topic and have been recording what happens to the moon in different phases. We have also been drawing shadows in the playground, and reading our class novel ‘The owl who was afraid of the dark’.

We have visited the Nursery for Transition sessions, participated in Art and Craft and made new friends. Miss Riley has visited the class to teach IT skills when Mrs Smith is teaching Russian to P4/5, and we have been learning how to log in with our passwords.

We were very impressed by how well the children learned their lines and songs for our Nativity production. They were also ready to step in if any friends were absent during rehearsals. They enjoyed working with P6/7 to make their headbands too.

In PE we have learned some Scottish country  dances.

Lastly, thank you very much to all parents who sent in resources to enhance our Post Office role play and wet playtimes box.

P1/2 October 2022

In Literacy Primary 1 have been introduced to the first two sets of sounds and have worked very hard to listen to them in words, read them and form them correctly. P2 have been learning some two-letter sounds and working on tricky words in pairs. We have been listening to lots of Mr. Men stories in order to improve our listening skills and vocabulary.

In Numeracy P1s have been working on counting , ordering and forming numbers 0-8, and making numbers one or two more. P2s have worked on strategies for addition to 20 and reinforcing subtraction to 10. Everyone has worked on 2d and 3d shape, positional language and pattern making.

In RME we learned about Harvest traditions and sharing food with our neighbours, and in music learned a Harvest song  called ‘Cauliflowers Fluffy’ to sing when we delivered the food. In Art we have painted and used oil pastels and collage to create a variety of pictures. In French we have learned about the country of France and some greetings. In Drama we learned how to use our body posture and actions to adapt a role. In PE we have been working on improving our core strength.

Through our topic ‘Senses’ we learned how we use our senses to find out about the world around us. Thank you very much to the parents who visited the class to share their knowledge and experiences, there will be other topics throughout the year that you may be able to help us with.

P2/3 – October 22

In numeracy this term, we have been working on place value either with 2-digit, 3-digit or 4-digit numbers.  We invited our parents/carers into a learning workshop to share our place value learning.  We worked collaboratively to build models using 1s, 10s and 100s dienes.  Our parents/carers then supported the children to total the value of our model, focusing on grouping in tens to support our counting.  In beyond number we have been learning about 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional shapes and thinking about their properties.

In literacy, we have been focusing on developing our independence in our writing and knowing what can support us; word bank books and independent white boards.  We have also been focusing on making our writing legible and knowing when to use full stops and capital letters.  We are also developing our reading for enjoyment through daily ‘everybody reading in class’.

In health and wellbeing we have worked together to create our class charter based on our school visions and values.  We have also been learning about growth mindset and how this can help us on our learning journeys.

For our topic we have been learning about Helping our Community.  The children came up with lots of learning activities so have been learning about who helps us in our community and we had a parent GP come in and explain their roll to the children and gave them the opportunity to use some medical equipment.  The children also suggested helping their community by organising a litter pick-up.  We therefore went out into the village and collected lots of litter from our walk.

P1 May Update

P1 have really enjoyed learning about our topic. We had a super discussion about what plants need to grow and were surprised that one of the conditions needed was time! We have planted some seeds in the classroom and are going to see how long it takes for the first shoots to appear. We are also learning facts about minibeasts and looking at the lifecycle of a frog.

In Literacy we have been predicting what happens next in a story, writing speech bubbles for a character and designing a book cover to attract the reader. We also looked how instructions are written and wrote our own instructions about how to cross a road safely. We had a go at acting it out too.

In Health and Wellbeing we learned about emergencies and appropriate services.

In Numeracy we were working on building number family facts and putting them into our memory. We revised doubles and used them in subtraction. We are also working on subtraction with money.

P1 had a lovely time visiting nursery for a transition afternoon. We were kept busy chatting to the nursery children, playing in the sand and farm trays and doing lots of arts and crafts. Nursery staff were impressed with their good manners and helpfulness. The class voted to make another visit soon!
