Fishermoss Olympic Parade in London

Two Primary 2 pupils Jodie Drummond and Ross Balbirnie represented Fishermoss School at the Gold Challenge Olympic Stadium Parade in London where they ‘warmed up the track for London 2012!’  Fishermoss was apparently the only Scottish School taking part in the Olympic Stadium Parade.  The route the pupils took mirrors the route of the opening ceremony.  They met various Team GB legends and celebrity ambassadors.  The pupils got the opportunity to take their seats in the stands and watch the rest of the events’ festivities.  Ross and Jodie led the way for Fishermoss School to play its part in the Olympics!

Well done Jodie and Ross 🙂

We Will Rock You at Aboyne Academy

Aboyne Academy Show rocks Deeside

Aboyne pupils wowed audiences last week with two fantastic performances of the West End Hit Musical We Will  Rock You. Written by Ben Elton, the musical features many of Queen’s greatest songs. The show began with some spectacular lighting effects which set the scene for an exciting evening.  From the outset the audience were treated to brilliant performances from a strong cast of pupils ranging in age from S1 – S6. Galileo, played by the very talented Craig Giblin was convincing as the central character in search of real music on the strange Planet Mall where live Music is banned and conformity rules. Killer Queen played by Heather Stodter gave a super performance making mincemeat of her sidekick Khashoggi  played impressively by Bob O’Reilly Mclean. Melanie Christie was outstanding as Scaramouche who falls in love with Galileo as together they go in search of long lost musical instruments. Great performances, too, from Andrew Sim as Brit, Abigail Thomson as Meat and Neil Thomson Mitchell as Pop.

The cast were supported by a live band, including – Cameron Christie on drums, Darren Stott on bass, Robbie Iason and Angus Whyman on guitar. Guitar teacher Dave Inkster played Lead Guitar.

Behind the scenes Rory Beaton was provided excellent lighting as well as set design and choreography. Alex Day did a brilliant job as Stage Manager and also helped with set.  A large number of pupils and staff, too many to mention, contributed to this excellent production which was enjoyed by a full house on both evenings.

Mill O’ Forest and the Goblin Race

This year, Mill O’ Forest Primary School invested in a “Greenpower Gobin” kit which allowed the pupils to be introduced to engineering in a fun and innovative way. The pupils spent several weeks carefully assembling the go kart with support from parents who came into school on a voluntary basis.

When the Goblin kit arrived in school it was flat packed and it came with a step by step manual. Building the Goblin introduced basic mechanics to all team members involved and once they completed the kart they had a fully functional car that could be raced competitively. All the pupils from primary 5 to primary 7 were involved in designing the model. The finished kart proudly displayed the beautiful Mill O’ Forest tartan, the crests of the 4 houses within the school and the logos of the sponsors who generously helped to finance the equipment that was needed for the drivers and the support team.

Once the kart was completed, open trials were held in the playground for the P7 pupils and a driving and support team of 13 girls and boys were selected. Representing Mill O’ Forest, they travelled to the racing track at the Grampian Transport Museum in Alford on Saturday 16th June to compete against 27 other schools from all around Scotland. A large number of pupils and parents made the trip to support their friends and classmates.

The first challenge of the morning was a slalom race where drivers had to carefully weave around cones and come to a complete stop within a box. Next the kart’s speed and the driver’s nerves were tested as they drag raced their karts on a straight section of track. The main event in the afternoon was the sprint race. The heats saw 4 karts going head to head and racing three times around the track. Mill O’ Forest won their heat and also went on to qualify in the semi-final. The final of the sprint was hugely exciting as the karts had to travel 6 times around the track. Mill O’ Forest edged into the lead early and battled to stay ahead in what was a nail-biting finish to the day!

The pupils returned to Stonehaven having won trophies for first place in the sprint race and second place in the slalom. They were a real credit to the school and at all times they showed a sense of team spirit and sportsmanship.

Kemnay Academy Drama Elective Wins the Day ……in French!

The S1 Drama Elective was offered the chance to perform a play in French. Being a merry band of seven, they jumped at the opportunity to perform to a live audience.

As part of their skill building, they had improvised a piece called The Pit.  With the help of their Drama teacher, Mr Ross, the sketch was carefully scripted in English then translated into French by the Modern Language Department.  The Pit, a story of alien invasion, became “La Fosse” and several weeks of rehearsals began to ensure costume, effects and lighting were correct, not to mention pronunciation and voice projection in a second language.

La Fosse was entered into a French theatre competition open to schools across the North East called Rencontres Théâtrales.  It was organised by the the Institut Français d’Écosse, based in Edinburgh.

The event took place on 28th March in Bucksburn Academy and we were delighted when our Kemnay team won the senior competition and £200 sponsored by Total and presented by the Franco-Scottish Society of Aberdeen.

It only remains to thank the pupils of the S1Drama Elective for performing so brilliantly on the day and doing their French and Drama skills proud.  Thanks also go to Mr Ross for allowing his elective to take a detour for a number of weeks.

Alford Academy Develop Outdoor Learning Classroom

Many years ago Alford Academy was gifted a Forestry Plot in Murray Park, to promote an interest in Forestry careers amongst the students of the time.  The plot was planted up with a mixture of conifer species by the students. One of the staff of Aberdeenshire Council’s Roads and Landscape Services department, who still lives in Alford, remembered as a pupil removing birch trees and planting conifers.

In recent decades the plot has seen little use by the school, as the economics of forestry combined with the introduction of mechanisation has seen a reduction in the number of jobs in Forestry.

Several years ago it was decided to use the plot as part of an outdoor activity week that the Academy run each year, and a number of improvements have been made which were aimed at improving access and encouraging the use of the plot for Outdoor Learning activities.  Under the guidance of Alford Academy teachers Clive and Maria Marsden, a series of annual mini-projects have been organised. The first task was to make the area safe as there were a large number of unstable trees. These had to be felled and at the same time, an area for ‘regeneration’ and an area for a ‘classroom’ was created. A path was created to allow access to the plot, and the clearing was created to make a useful gathering and teaching space amongst the trees.

This year, the school were given a small grant by the Forest Education Initiative to further develop the use of the resource.  Unfortunately, the strong winds this winter meant that, as previously, the forest area had to be made safe as a number of large trees were ‘hanging’ on others. However, these formed the basis for the production of simple furniture. A cargo parachute was bought and due to the diligence and patience of one of the school technicians the hundreds of rips were repaired. This formed the ‘icing on the cake’ in terms of giving the classroom a canopy.

On May 31st  and June 1st,  students from the Academy took part in building an outdoor teaching space.  Local forestry contractor, Ben Hudson of Treelogic, a former Alford Academy pupil, brought along a portable chainsaw mill (called an Alaskan Saw) to turn windblown spruce trees into useful planks which the students used to build benches and a plank wall.  Doug. Gooday (FEI) came and taught fire-lighting and forest safety to small groups of students in turn whilst the rest dug holes, repaired paths and built furniture. There were different students on each of the two days. Wet and soggy on day one and warm and sunny on day two. The students had great fun being outdoors, doing something worthwhile and it provided some first-hand practical experience in using tools and team working.

Ardallie School

Ardallie School pupils and staff have been in celebration mode recently.

Ardallie was selected as a lucky winner of a £500 sport equipment voucher to recognise their achievements during National School Sport Week 2011 for gaining a minimum number of parent support pledges during the support campaign. A representative from the Bank of Scotland local branch came along to the school to mark the achievement.

Staff members Lynne Stewart and Nina Travis were awarded a Going Green, Bronze Award in the council’s 2012 Employee Achievement Awards. This is the third year they have been recognised having previously achieved Gold last year and 2nd in 2010.

The school gained their third Green Flag Award and celebrated their success at a recent Open Day. Dr Eilidh Whiteford MP made the presentation. Guests included Maria Walker, Director of Education, Fiona Cruickshanks, QIO and the pupils and staff of Tipperty School.
