Mill O’ Forest : Giant Walking Bus

All the schools made large, colourful banners with slogans and pictures to take on our Walking Bus for the community to see as we walked.  We walked through the community and met in our local park.  On our Giant Walking Bus, we displayed 20 different road signs and road safety questions.  The pupils of the Mill O’ Forest Eco Committee selected and painted the road signs, chose the questions and distributed answer sheets to the other schools. Then, all the pupils from three community schools (nearly 1000 pupils!) were able to see the signs and take part in our Road Safety Quiz.

A winning entry will be selected the Eco Committee and a prize, linked to travelling safely, will be sent out.  Mearns FM Radio let the Eco Committee use their equipment to read the answers for the Quiz.  We wanted all the pupils to learn on the day and the quiz helped them to be able to identify important signs that they might find as they walk, cycle or ride in the car.

Finally, a vote of thanks and congratulations was given by one of the three councillors who had joined with us on our Walking Bus.  A very successful day – and the rain stayed off for just long enough! It was great to have so many members of the community working together to promote BRAKE and road safety in our town.  (Teachers, Parents, Councillors, Police Officers, Traffic Wardens).  We were delighted to see our efforts recognised at a national level by BRAKE on their Giant Walking Bus Thank You Bulletin which was sent out on Friday 14th June 2013.

Mill O’ Forest Primary School is logging the day as our annual Day of Eco Action under the Transport heading.

Winning Artist at Mill O’Forest

Mill O’ Forest Primary School has an off-site allotment at Baird Park in Stonehaven which the Primary 5/6 pupils visited in November of 2012. They walked through the local community considering the natural beauty that surrounds them, taking photographs to capture all the wonders on their doorstep. Their journey took them by the rugged coastline to the peaceful woodlands at Dunnottar, past wild birds in the River Carron and a number of flora and fauna. The pupils entered their wonderful photographs into the Shutterbugs competition run by GTCS. We are delighted to report that many of the photographs that were taken on that chilly day are now featured on the webpage showing entries from primary school children from across Scotland.

Yesterday we received a letter informing us that Rikki Gilchrist, a Primary 5 pupil, had won first place in the Shutterbugs competition! His picture of trees against the skyline thoroughly impressed the judges and earned him first place! The school are very proud of his wonderful achievement and are thrilled that he has been recognised in a national competition.

Many congratulations, Rikki!

Mill O’Forest 4th Green Flag Award

Mill O’ Forest Primary School is delighted to announce that it has received a fourth Green Flag from Eco Schools Scotland in conjunction with Keep Scotland Beautiful. The continuation of our Green Flag status was awarded after the whole school studied Biodiversity, School Grounds and Litter for the last two years. The award recognises the school’s achievement towards a sustainable lifestyle and the commitment we make to ensuring that environmental awareness and action are an intrinsic part of our school life and ethos. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the pupils, parents and members of the community who helped us on the journey to attaining our fourth Green Flag.

Well done Mill O’Forest 🙂

Mill O’ Forest and the Goblin Race

This year, Mill O’ Forest Primary School invested in a “Greenpower Gobin” kit which allowed the pupils to be introduced to engineering in a fun and innovative way. The pupils spent several weeks carefully assembling the go kart with support from parents who came into school on a voluntary basis.

When the Goblin kit arrived in school it was flat packed and it came with a step by step manual. Building the Goblin introduced basic mechanics to all team members involved and once they completed the kart they had a fully functional car that could be raced competitively. All the pupils from primary 5 to primary 7 were involved in designing the model. The finished kart proudly displayed the beautiful Mill O’ Forest tartan, the crests of the 4 houses within the school and the logos of the sponsors who generously helped to finance the equipment that was needed for the drivers and the support team.

Once the kart was completed, open trials were held in the playground for the P7 pupils and a driving and support team of 13 girls and boys were selected. Representing Mill O’ Forest, they travelled to the racing track at the Grampian Transport Museum in Alford on Saturday 16th June to compete against 27 other schools from all around Scotland. A large number of pupils and parents made the trip to support their friends and classmates.

The first challenge of the morning was a slalom race where drivers had to carefully weave around cones and come to a complete stop within a box. Next the kart’s speed and the driver’s nerves were tested as they drag raced their karts on a straight section of track. The main event in the afternoon was the sprint race. The heats saw 4 karts going head to head and racing three times around the track. Mill O’ Forest won their heat and also went on to qualify in the semi-final. The final of the sprint was hugely exciting as the karts had to travel 6 times around the track. Mill O’ Forest edged into the lead early and battled to stay ahead in what was a nail-biting finish to the day!

The pupils returned to Stonehaven having won trophies for first place in the sprint race and second place in the slalom. They were a real credit to the school and at all times they showed a sense of team spirit and sportsmanship.
