Udny Green Eco Fun Day

Our Eco Fun Day On 25th April 2012, we joined 11 other schools for an ECO fun day at Haddo Estate. On arrival we all congregated in the theatre to discuss the day’s schedule. Our first activity was building bird houses which was a fun challenge. Our next activity was a tour of Haddo House which we thoroughly enjoyed. We especially liked the paintings, finding the secret passage, the library and all the history connected to the house. After lunch we planted Hawthorn and Rowan trees behind the Pheasantry. We discovered that making a T-cut to plant trees was very effective. Unfortunately we were only able to plant two trees per school. We finished the day by becoming Nature Detectives. We had to find and solve clues to a crime that had taken place. A stoat had knocked over a blue-tit nest box and eaten the eggs. We all greatly enjoyed our day out and would gladly do it all again. Thank you very much to everyone who helped organise the day.

Kemnay Academy ROV Success

ROV team members, Gavin McKenzie, Gregor Young, John Stewart and Martin Thompson, have been building a submersible remote operated vehicle sponsored by Marinetech.org and administered by MATE (Marine Advanced Technology Education Centre). The Scottish Regional heat was on 12 March hosted by Robert Gordon University. The project is sponsored locally by BP and Opito (Oil & Gas Academy). A week before the competition they used St Andrews School swimming pool to test the vehicle. During the final, the team undertook practical challenges using the ROV in the water. Team members all had specific tasks to fulfil during the pool activities. The team came third, a bonus since they were newcomers and all the other schools had competed before. They gained £200 to encourage future developments.

Young Engineers @Mearns Academy

Another group demonstrated a possible solution to wave and tide power. The judges thought the work was excellent and awarded them 3rd place, finally the ROV group demonstrated the fantastic submarine they have built and used in competition. Overall a fantastic day out, Students were all very knowledeable and as usual were great ambassadors for the school.
